ayoisaiah··on Book Review: A Philosophy of Software Design (2020)
I summarised this book[1] earlier this month. One of my favourite insights was the bit about in-code documentation. I think Ousterhout made it very clear what good documentation should be all about, and I was able to apply those insights immediately.

ayoisaiah··on In praise of --dry-run
This resonates with me. I recently published a cross-platform tool [1] for bulk renaming files with dry run as the default. In this mode, it shows the changes about to be made and any possible problems that may occur (such as overwriting existing files). To actually carry out the changes a flag must be used.

I felt it was a good design decision since the effects of bulk renaming can be substantial. Most other similar tools have it backwards with their dry-run mode relegated to a secondary action.

ayoisaiah··on Android 12 will let alternative app stores update apps automatically
Auto update is good default policy IMO. Most non-technical people don't care to update apps as long as the apps are working which could lead to unnecessary security issues or critical bugs left unpatched.
ayoisaiah··on LG is getting out of the mobile phone business
I disagree with your take on the Samsung. While it's not perfect, it's the best (and sometimes only) option for most people who want an top end Android phone. Google sells it's phones in only a handful of countries, same with Oneplus, LG and Sony and all of them have their own compromises. So in many parts of the world, its either Samsung or a Chinese manufacturer like Xiaomi.

I find Samsung apps to be much better than their Google counterparts. Samsung Health, Internet, Calculator and Notes are examples. Besides, they fit the UI really well along with the menus and other things. And whatever annoyances you've experienced can be tweaked since the UI is highly customisable (bar none).

In terms of long-term support, Samsung also provides 3 years of upgrades and 4 years of security updates. That's the best from any company bar Apple and it extends to their midrange devices too.

ayoisaiah··on How Vivaldi browser is different from Google Chrome
I had the same experience so I switched to Edge when I need a Chromium browser. Still use Firefox as my main browser though

ayoisaiah··on Developer and Power Users Tool List for Windows
My suggestion: O&O ShutUp10 [1]

It allows you to control your privacy by deactivating various Windows functions, and you don't even need to install it.

ayoisaiah··on Developer and Power Users Tool List for Windows
One of the tools I kept hearing about while on Linux. Really impressed at how fast it is!
ayoisaiah··on Developer and Power Users Tool List for Windows
I was shocked when I saw that it's 120 MB, but I downloaded it anyway. Looks like a good Wox alternative so far....just skeptical about the performance and impact on battery given its Electron roots.

Do you mean Switcheroo? That's the one I use
ayoisaiah··on Developer and Power Users Tool List for Windows
Recently switched from Linux to Windows after WSL2 came out. I grew tired of the various shortcomings in Linux, hence the switch.

Windows has its quirks, but I can say I prefer it at this point. And still do all my development in WSL, so win win.

ayoisaiah··on Ask HN: Best Dev Laptop 2020
The Dell XPS line from this year looks really solid. I would go for the 15 inch and use Windows + WSL2 instead of native Linux.
ayoisaiah··on Halide Mark II
Open camera...but the interface is well not anywhere close to this.
ayoisaiah··on Halide Mark II
That's not true. You can change the lockscreen shortcuts on Samsung phones for example
ayoisaiah··on Apple to kill Epic’s accounts on Friday the 28th
How does it imply that? Which of those devices you mentioned (e-readers, GPS devices, car entertainment systems) have a store for downloading apps? If they do, then yes I would like to be able to put whatever I want on there without the approval of some corporation.
ayoisaiah··on Apple to kill Epic’s accounts on Friday the 28th
You're not seriously trying to equate Xbox and iPhone usage in the same category
ayoisaiah··on Apple to kill Epic’s accounts on Friday the 28th
The difference is that those other devices have a specific use. Smartphones are general purpose devices, so it's not the same at all
ayoisaiah··on Apple to kill Epic’s accounts on Friday the 28th
Willing is not the right word. They generally have a greater means to do so.
ayoisaiah··on Mozilla VPN
Just a happy user :)

Blokada is pretty popular for Ad blocking on Android. And it's open source too: https://github.com/blokadaorg/blokada

ayoisaiah··on Mozilla VPN
I won't be switching to this. I've been paying €4.99 monthly for Blokada VPN on Android. It's pretty reliable and offers ad blocking as well. Also supports up to 5 devices.

ayoisaiah··on Diving into Go by building a CLI application
I've been building CLIs with Go as part of a 52 projects in 52 weeks challenge[1] and I'm loving it so far. I released a batch renaming tool [2] just a few days ago.

ayoisaiah··on Google Pixel Buds
It's a lot cheaper than Airpods Pro, and has a few tricks up its sleeve like Assistant/Real-time translation.
ayoisaiah··on Google Pixel Buds
What is the source for this claim? They only work perfectly with Apple devices. For other devices, they're function just as generic Bluetooth earbuds
ayoisaiah··on Google Pixel Buds
Airpods were not the first true wireless earbuds. Samsung released the Gear IconX in 2016.

You could say Apple took an idea and made it better, and that's exactly how it should work. Google is simply trying to do the same thing here
