aychedee··on The Rise and Rise of Television Torture
I binge watched Fringe and the X-Files over the holidays. The most stark difference to me was the torture. Fringe in some ways is delightful and gentle. Especially in the portrayal of Walter's mental illness. It's very much like the X-Files in that regards. But even in a show like that they still packed in the torture. What blog post SHOULD I have written? I know Scandal is full of torture. Does our Sci-fi need to be as well? Why is that? What changed since the X-Files were released? That's the point I was trying to make anyway.

Really? I'm the OP. I just binge watched all of Fringe and it's jam packed full of torture. The very fact that you don't remember it is perhaps part of the point I was making. It's very much just the done thing. Torture doesn't have to be conducted in a dungeon with hot irons. It's any situation where you cause serious distress to a helpless person you control. I would argue that fans not being able to remember torture scenes is my point precisely. Oh, it's so blase and mundane that you don't even remember? Oh the government's torturing people you say? So what? I see that shit every day. It's not that bad... etc.

I'm the OP. The torture that most jumped out at me was in the first season of Fringe...
aychedee··on The Rise and Rise of Television Torture
I'm the author... I pretty much figured that 24 was generally acknowledged to be torture full. I wrote that piece after spending the holidays binge watching X-Files and Fringe. Such similar subject matter but such hugely different treatments.
aychedee··on Poll: Which RSS reader have you switched to?
Feedly devs, injecting HTML into every other browser page is a complete turn off. I paid for Newsblur instead.
aychedee··on Ask HN: Have you settled on a Google Reader replacement?
Yeah, Feedly developers, if you are reading this. Don't inject an image into every page I visit. Uninstalled.

I've gone with Newsblur now.

aychedee··on BitTorrent’s Secure Dropbox Alternative Goes Public
This is much more interesting than Dropbox... http://www.aychedee.com/2013/04/24/dead-drop-with-bittorrent...
aychedee··on Bitcoin falls from $266
That 'lag' is every single person trying to sell their holdings at once.
aychedee··on Bitcoin hits $200
There is no transition required. When send an amount of bitcoins to another address you specify how much of a transaction fee you are willing to pay to the miner who solves the block of transactions your transaction will be included in. Any given miner can prefer to solve transaction blocks with higher fees. Eventually it will get to the point that if you don't include a transaction fee your transaction will just be ignored and not included in the block chain. At the moment it will probably be included anyway because of the inherent reward for creating a valid transaction block.

Rule 34... Can someone post some shots of their facilities. I'm just interested. Ya know.
aychedee··on Can Hospital Chains Improve the Medical Industry?
I dunno, it seems like so much heat and light is wasted in America trying to 'figure out' health care. There are lots of countries that have figured out health care. Just study the best practice and put together a viable system.

If you want the absolute best return in units of health care per dollar spent then the New Zealand system was the most efficient last time I looked.

aychedee··on What should we call the "phone"?
That exactly my point, we could easily just start using the word 'phone' to refer to all pocket sized computing devices.

It would be anachronistic.

aychedee··on What should we call the "phone"?
I also really hate the term "smartphone", which I probably should have mentioned.
aychedee··on Secrets Of Freemium Pricing: Make The Cheapskates Pay
This is one of the better articles I've read on HN ever I think. More of this.
aychedee··on Ask HN: Tell us about your side projects.
I've been working on http://www.thenpsx.com/. It's a prediction market for consumer products. I'm slowly growing the number of products represented and getting a bit of market activity. Though it's pretty thin at the moment.
aychedee··on We Are Now One Year Away From Global Riots, Complex Systems Theorists Say
Well, you could kill yourself. If you think that's the moral solution to this problem.
aychedee··on Abandoning VIM
Linux and Vim are an IDE. The best I've ever come across.

I was promised internet money!
aychedee··on Learn how to code a Facebook app in 20 minutes with PythonAnywhere
Developed it ourselves, well the JavaScript terminal is shellinabox (http://code.google.com/p/shellinabox/) but it's connecting via websockets to a Tornado server that does all the interesting stuff.
aychedee··on Learn how to code a Facebook app in 20 minutes with PythonAnywhere
The internet, it's just a big ATM really.
aychedee··on Why Subversion does not suck
In what way does it 'fail' at bigger repos? It was designed to handle the largest and most complex OS repo that exists.

For me the most amazing thing about git is how it is built out of very simple blocks. Each commit or object is a simple hash of it's contents. Which is just brilliant really. That's why it so fast and avoids any potential data corruption.

aychedee··on Google reveals their programming style guides
Yes, I was just coming in here to say that they were never hidden, always publicly available.
aychedee··on Ask PG/HN : Replacing Email - What problems/solution comes to your mind?
Email is the worst solution to the problem of general communication except for all the others.

In fact I think that quote goes a long way to explaining why email is so wonderfully useful while also being annoying. Because it is so wonderfully free and open. That's also it's downside

aychedee··on Jack Dorsey’s Lunchtime Tweet Reveals Square’s Total Lack of Female Interns
My wife works for a fashion related magazine. There is one man on a staff of over a hundred people. I've never seen an article about why this is a problem. Should it be?
aychedee··on Who's Propping Up the U.S. Treasury Market?
Everyone? No seriously. Pretty much everyone is. Any country with a surplus of dollars pretty much has nothing else useful to do with them.
aychedee··on Seriously? Ads?
Android is a success. It is the new dominant commodity operating system.
aychedee··on The Fundamental Problem with Non-iPhones
This reads like a parody of all these types of blog posts.

I mean: "The iPhone plainly put is the perfect phone size. It feels right, this is not something Steve Jobs would have gotten wrong."

Totally made me chuckle. Upvoted for the brilliant parody value alone.

aychedee··on VM export for EC2
Whoops, yes of course. That's what I meant. Moving images between regions is currently a pain.
aychedee··on VM export for EC2
Let's hope they support Linux exports soon then. This solves another problem as well, which is easily moving images around availability zones.
aychedee··on Why Do Our Best and Brightest End Up in Silicon Valley and Not D.C.?
Because the best people I know want to create things and help people. Not perform arbitrary tasks for wealthy sponsors in order to pull together the money to win again...
