ayaros··on GPT might be an information virus (2023)
Web rings are a thing I've been thinking about a bit. Anyone know any good ones? There are a couple I reached out to for one of the projects I'm working on, to get my site on them, but I never got responses. There are also some webrings I've come across that have died or been retired. :(
ayaros··on Update Complete: U.S. Nuclear Weapons No Longer Need Floppy Disks (2019)
A tragic day for America. This new generation just doesn't appreciate floppy disks anymore.
ayaros··on Show HN: Windows 7 GUI for the web
Yes, I thought this was beautiful too. Art imitates life, as they say.
ayaros··on Show HN: Windows 7 GUI for the web
That's because Windows 7 was the last release purely focused on usability on desktops. We all know what happened with Windows 8; Windows 10/11 still have to account for multitouch displays.

Also, they screwed up the start menu/screen search in windows 8 and it has sucked since then. :(

ayaros··on GPT might be an information virus (2023)
This doesn't seem to be structured differently than a standard-fare social media app. All the same issues with human verification on those apps would apply to this too.

Unless you mean a platform only for vetted local journalists...

ayaros··on GPT might be an information virus (2023)
We're going to have to go in the opposite direction and rely on directories or lists of verified human-made/accurate content. It will be like the old days of yahoo and web-indexes all over again.
ayaros··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (July 2025)
The Calculator app for LisaGUI. I'm using high precision fixed point arithmetic to do the calculations. It's gonna have the same functionality as the original, with three different modes and a toggle-able paper tape. The Lisa's manual has been surprisingly helpful.
ayaros··on Never write your own date parsing library
I will now post the relevant Tom Scott video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5wpm-gesOY

I tried it. I will never try again unless I take, like, six months to plan out how the system will work before I even write a single line of code.

ayaros··on Logical implication is a comparison operator
This confused me too.
ayaros··on Before Macintosh: The Apple Lisa (2024) [video]
Is 1.5 hours really too long for people to watch that they feel it's not even worth it if they can read an AI-generated summary?

I get that people have limited time, but a documentary is about more than just consuming raw textual information; it's a chance to hear and see people speaking about their experiences. It's a multi-sensory experience.

All a link like this really accomplishes is to take views away from the actual video, and I feel it's a disservice to the people who put in the hard work of filming, editing, and creating graphics and animations for a fully-finished production.

ayaros··on Before Macintosh: The Apple Lisa (2024) [video]
This is David Greelish's great documentary about the Lisa with interviews from John Sculley, Bill Atkinson, Ray Arachelian (developer of LisaEm), and many others involved with the Lisa both in the past and the present. It's been free on YouTube for a number of months, but I feel it deserves a bit more attention.

David also recently published some of his extended interview footage with Bill Atkinson, which can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAAFnqj-Cks

It's always fun to see some footage from the cutting room floor. I think some of the casual banter that normally gets edited out really does a lot to humanize people.

ayaros··on SCP-055 is an "antimeme" – it erases itself from memory when observed
Qntm is a great author and deserves the support of everyone here. The antimemetics division series is the primary reason I kept following the SCP wiki for years after it had long since peaked my interest (because I was waiting for him to finish 55555, which took forever). Fine Structure is also wonderful, as was Ed.

Yes, the clock is a buggy mess, I know :(
ayaros··on Show HN: I wrote a "web OS" based on the Apple Lisa's UI, with 1-bit graphics
I'm actually quite astounded I overlooked this myself.

This will be an option in the future. I just need to properly define how the menubar module system will work. I have a couple other toggle-able things which will be added to the menu bar in the future.

I should clarify I'm indeed not using the api call to get device pixel ratio; I forgot I had ended up not needing it because all that code is stuff I wrote about a year ago, lol
ayaros··on Show HN: I wrote a "web OS" based on the Apple Lisa's UI, with 1-bit graphics
Update: this is done now!
ayaros··on Show HN: I wrote a "web OS" based on the Apple Lisa's UI, with 1-bit graphics
Sorry! It's a bit buried in the "Tips" document. This is something I need to emphasize more!
ayaros··on Show HN: I wrote a "web OS" based on the Apple Lisa's UI, with 1-bit graphics
It's not open source right now... maybe someday, but not right now. :)

I do have plans to eventually add a UI to add, edit, and remove custom color palette values... it's just a matter of coding up a dialog that lets you type in the RGB values and a label for each user-defined preset. I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
ayaros··on Show HN: I wrote a "web OS" based on the Apple Lisa's UI, with 1-bit graphics
The menu bar is hidden in the installer because that's how the Lisa's installer looked. I definitely need to do some work on layouts to make things more responsive. If your phone's screen is too small the text may overflow and things can get cut-off. But I don't want to cram scroll-able panes into all these dialogs because the Lisa didn't even do that.

I'm balancing historical accuracy with modern constraints with my own self-imposed technical debts, so there's bound to be compromises!

ayaros··on Async Queue – One of my favorite programming interview questions
I made use of this in my LisaGUI project; I referenced an absolutely fantastic example on this on SO: https://stackoverflow.com/a/63208885
ayaros··on There's a COMPUTER inside my DS flashcart [video]
f4mi's channel isn't so bad... it's a little click-baity sometimes, but I often get a kick out of Gen-Z's amusement when dealing with technology just before their time.
ayaros··on Show HN: I wrote a "web OS" based on the Apple Lisa's UI, with 1-bit graphics
I'm really happy you enjoyed it! The Lisa's a really cool machine; definitely easier to work with and service than some of Apple's other designs...

I've received several comments regarding the font - people are saying some of the character widths appear uneven. The font characters are literally bitmap fonts; each character is printed the same way every time, unless one or more styles is applied to it, but this is done in a consistent way. The Lisa's system font is also of a notably distinct style; the vertical parts of each letter are slightly wider than the horizontal parts to make up for the 2:3 pixel aspect ratio.

If things appear uneven, these issues may be due to viewing the screen at 1x scale on a lower-DPI display, as I mentioned in another comment. The only way for me to debug these issues is with a screenshot. You can press Windows + PrintScreen to take a screenshot on Windows, or press Command + Shift + 3 on a Mac. You can send them to me using the email link at the bottom of https://yaros.ae/ or by messaging me on Bluesky (https://bsky.app/profile/lisagui.com).

Also, I've been posting project updates to the Bluesky account, and I'll continue to do so in the future for anyone interested in keeping up with the project. There's also an RSS link on my website for anyone who's old-school and doesn't want to make a Bluesky account.

It's my pleasure. I am very happy you got some nostalgia out of it!
ayaros··on Show HN: I wrote a "web OS" based on the Apple Lisa's UI, with 1-bit graphics
For some reason I never seem to encounter bugs like this myself! I guess I'll have to do another rewrite of that. Was it just the menu clock? Did the clock app exhibit the same behavior?
ayaros··on Show HN: I wrote a "web OS" based on the Apple Lisa's UI, with 1-bit graphics
The clock is not entirely bug-free and has been a bit of a victim of my impulse towards premature optimization. I've rewrote it once and I'm considering rewriting it again... so it's not just you. It should hopefully work properly if you reload the page.
ayaros··on Show HN: I wrote a "web OS" based on the Apple Lisa's UI, with 1-bit graphics
The Lisa doesn't have an alt-tab function for Window management, so I haven't added one. Also, it would be difficult to use those keys in particular because it would conflict with your system's alt+tab keyboard shortcut.

When you select text in a textbox, the keyboard should input text. Also, individual menu items have their own keyboard shortcuts. If you're on a PC, it defaults to using the Control key as the "Apple" key. If your on a Mac, it defaults to using the Command key. This option can be changed in the preferences app in the "Set Conveniences" pane.

That's definitely way too small! You should try it on a desktop or laptop.
