axiomsEnd··on Noam Chomsky: “We’re approaching the most dangerous point in human history”
From perspective of some people, like here, countries from ex-Soviet block do not exist and do not make sovereign decisions about their aliences. It's really weird to read (mostly US-based, left-wing) authors who simply forget about whole nations just to push USA-bad narrative. Which is even more disturbing once you see what kind of parties in Europe are pro-Russia.
axiomsEnd··on New Male Birth Control Pill Effectively Prevents Pregnancy Without Side Effects
Oral contraceptives are not as comfortable and easy to use as condoms, which are available everywhere. Taking drugs just to avoid pregnacy would be an alternative probably for people in relationships (instead of sometimes problematic womens contraceptives) and for people doing a lot of casual sex (who probably already use condoms/woman are on hormonal contraception).

Can you show data that shows how much productivity has fallen? Also, how productivity and wages change in last 30-40 years. From what I know, although wages in low and middle jobs stagnate, the productivity now is extremly high. Also, in which countries it's objectively and subjectively true?
axiomsEnd··on It’s almost impossible to lose anything in Japan
Japan : the one and only country in history with violent and brutal chapter in it's history.

It's about losing wallets...

axiomsEnd··on Israel passes law denying naturalization to Palestinian spouses
I love Western Culture as a term. In Central Europe it meant whatever was on the right side of Iron Curtain (mostly liberal democracy and all what comes with it), then Iron Curtain dissapeared and it got second meaning as white, Anglo-Saxon, protestant values protected in white, orthodox/catholic Slavic countries. Currently you have to guess which one it is from the context of the sentence.
axiomsEnd··on DuckDuckGo “down-rank sites associated with Russian disinformation”
If a war is just a TV news about no-one-really-cares part of Europe it's easy to treat it as another topic for debate and partisan discussion about USA. Because from my perspective this is main shift of the discussion - Russia, Ukraine, other bordering countries and their complicated history - they are being pushed away to discuss USA politics.

I see refugees every day, on train station and in line near passport office, and I know how Russia influences politics of my country for years, and well, not for the better. I'm also not the biggest fan of USA, but it's really weird seeing how the whole story about Russia influence becomes basically "USA was worst".

axiomsEnd··on YouTube Kids cleaned up its act
Not sure where Peppa Pig and Baby Shark land on the politics compas.
axiomsEnd··on I am the healthiest person I know, and I got cancer
How much can you forage in North USA or Europe outside season, and, regardless of season - without getting in troubles with law?
axiomsEnd··on I am the healthiest person I know, and I got cancer
Do you have any research papers linking microplastics in fish with certain cancers, and how/why is microplastic in fish is more harmful than... All other microplastic we i gest?
axiomsEnd··on When families un-adopt a child (2018)
It sounds a bit like being shunned from some controlling church.
axiomsEnd··on Texans overwhelmingly traveled out-of-state to get abortions after state ban
So elected officials of one kind are making decisions based on the merit, and other elected officials are making decisions based on... Hating their voters, I guess?
axiomsEnd··on Employers who violate Colorado’s non-compete laws face stiff new penalties
Are there any trading companies in countries without non-compete clauses? If yes, that would suggest that this isn't cost of lack of non-competes.
axiomsEnd··on Understanding the War in Ukraine
Isn't this more about playining on historical sentiments? In Polish-speaking internet russian trolls won't shut up about UPA and Wołyń massacre.
axiomsEnd··on Estonia, allies to trigger NATO Article 4
Just to be pedantic : three. Poland has a direct border with Russia in Kaliningrad Oblast.
axiomsEnd··on Estonia, allies to trigger NATO Article 4
Look at the map, they are attacking Lviv which is as far as something can be from Donbas. They are almost at the Polish border.

And why exactly Canada's turn is more intresting than, for example, Ukraine and Russia on a brink on war? I live in country, which for the last 7 years made a sharp turn towards rather literal authoritarism, but probably due to the issue being localised to Europe, not North America no one here would be fighting for the topic to be on the front page. Also, there are thousands of places create to discuss local and global events, less to discuss obscure IT topics.

Slate Star Codex put it nicely "The moral of the story is: if you’re against witch-hunts, and you promise to found your own little utopian community where witch-hunts will never happen, your new society will end up consisting of approximately three principled civil libertarians and seven zillion witches. It will be a terrible place to live even if witch-hunts are genuinely wrong."

Or it may that this community is international, so you either have tech talks, or a pile of discussions about politics in every part of the world.
axiomsEnd··on Show HN: Open-core icon sets that took me 12 years to create
But we never took that step forward fully. We are constantly using icons in real life (trafic signs is one example) when we want to communicate small dose of information, to everyone, in short amount of time. That's why we use icons - changing taskbar into list of words works only until there is enough space, and even then is more annoying then just finding instantly recognizable picture.

axiomsEnd··on More than half of Bitcoin investors are in the red, study says
He allows it in his country, which has a lot of fossil fuels and a giant, unusable freezer called Siberia. This is a nice PR move, and a good way to get some money from hard to track sources, which may be a good idea if you are trying to start a war, but it doesn't mean that Putin is good sources of inspiration.
axiomsEnd··on Non-Consensual Personalization
Instant messaging in 200x was based on "naked content" that could be parsed by anyone, so there was a lot of different programs supporting various forms of communications. If you weren't a programmer you simply relied on 3rd-party software and that worked quite nicely.
axiomsEnd··on Whichever party is in power, policies tend to be similar
The problem is that people for some reason are living in cities for thousands of years and this helped in progres of science/technology/art. It's a symbiotic, not parasitic relationship.
axiomsEnd··on Society has a trust problem. More censorship will only make it worse
People do not exist outside their circumstances. Being raised in religion/hateful worldview, without contact with outsiders and shunning doubtful members of group (alienating and shunning are really popular in such circles, in more or less vidible manner) doesn't give to many options in what to believe. Also, such ideas are not viewed as -isms inside such groups, they are often "fruit" of a whole tree of ideology and dogmas.
