awinder··on Modeling a Wealth Tax
I’m not misunderstanding anything, but that’s a cool way to blaze into a convo lol. Most/borderline all of these plans kick in above income thresholds, ie you dip down below 50M and you’re not paying the tax. So that’s one way you’re not getting 45%. The other way is that asset growth will play a huge role in how this tax effects you. The only way to get the 45% number is to say your assets didnt grow in 60 years, which is not realistic. In fact if your assets are growing even around average rates over 60 years you could pay in huge excess of the original principal, while also making a killing.
awinder··on Modeling a Wealth Tax
Yeah but if your wealth has compounded 400% over 40 years, and they took 40% compounded, then that paints a different picture. He’s playing games around the idea that 100% is the cap because that’s how most people would think about money.
awinder··on ‘George Eliot’ joins 24 female authors making debuts under their real names
I’m not picking a fight I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t walking into expert level trolling. It’s not an accident at all, you’re right. But this was not some happy thing in the 1800s. They picked George because it’s historically a male gendered name, so that small men would know they’re reading men’s work and it’s to be taken seriously and not laughed at in derision.
awinder··on ‘George Eliot’ joins 24 female authors making debuts under their real names
...really? Georgina / Georgia / Gina are common feminine forms (US anyways). The point of picking George was to pick an unassailably male name so no one would question if the works came from a female brain.
awinder··on Fortnite seems to have been removed from the Play Store as well
Apple didn’t initiate a hidden feature for an in-app store (flagrant violation) + an accompanying ad blitz + lawsuit. That said I kinda like the argument of currency, the problem I guess for Apple is that what’s the difference between fortnite bucks and any other IAP? I mean how would Apple differentiate it. Why not just make every app surrounded by a layer of conversion to your fake currency to get your commission down?

Wondering if instead Apple should look at pricing breaks when a customer spends over a certain amount on IAP or certain repeat transactions. In effect trying to differentiate the take they get for whatever initial bit but incentivize monetizing customers for the long haul. That has precedent with the subscription model they have been pushing to achieve similar pricing breaks as a compromise down to 15%

> “ If you play games on Windows you're familiar with this situation. They all want to run 24/7 and cram their UI in your face at every opportunity, and you just want to play that publisher's one game.”

Yes, thank you! In fact Epic is one of the worst of these stupid stores about blasting you with corner-of-screen advertising even when you’re doing nothing with it.

awinder··on Epic Games has filed legal papers in response to Apple [pdf]
So what does epic games do while this is being litigated? Isn’t this the cash cow, I know they’ve got other games but still (as a windows gamer I look forward to all of you who have found in Epic your David; what a bs company). Do you try to force your way back in without the offending thing or what?

This whole thing seems super coordinated but with some real confusing missing pieces, but should be fun to watch!

“ The EGS stands among the lowest app store cuts of any marketplace, at 12%, and Tim has become visibly angry during public appearances concerning Apple, Google, etc and their 30% cut.”

Lmfao at claiming that much moral superiority over a 2xish difference. I’m sure hes become visibly angry, John Legere was a character too, it’s a show.

awinder··on Uber CEO says its service will probably shut down temporarily in California
“Nobody will” is a bet, mostly on history of the last 30 years of winning these bets. If/when someone does do it, being a business that drew a line in the sand is going to make it difficult to adapt. Playing regulatory games is hard.

People are voting & doing something with their democracy; that’s how this passed. And they’ll have another choice when they vote on the prop. You’re tired of people leaning a certain way, I’m tired of people coming up with really cheap shots just because they don’t like outcomes. Get a cup of coffee.

awinder··on MicroStrategy Adopts Bitcoin as Primary Treasury Reserve Asset
As a shareholder of any company, I’d be extremely wary of outlier moves in mechanical business areas like cash management. Maybe there is something real going on there, but holding egads of cash and then putting it in a (by market-cap) fringe alternative is a weird move. It’s maybe interesting, but I’d be highly skeptical, it’s like seeing smoke... I want to find the embers...

MicroStrategy moves its cash into Bitcoin; shares up 9%

Oh go home 2020, you’re drunk.

awinder··on Ask HN: What feature did you find after years of using macOS?
Native resolution (3440x1440), scaling is default. This was a clean install on new hardware.
awinder··on Ask HN: What are some available force multipliers that most people don't know?
I was the same way and ultrawide is the happy medium for me. 1.5x width lets me have 3 columns of windows instead of 2 and then I virtual desktop for more expansion.
awinder··on Ask HN: What feature did you find after years of using macOS?
Did you just use defaults or one of the profiles? Will mess with this thanks for the tip!
awinder··on 1Password for Linux development preview
Ah sorry I missed it. My poor macbook pro of 8 years finally chimed it's last boot chime, so to speak. I have a windows PC that I had used mostly for games/web, so "convert" might be strong, I just haven't decided if its worth replacing :)
awinder··on Ask HN: What feature did you find after years of using macOS?
That's a hard pill to swallow when my ability to read anything is so strained by trying to focus letters. I mean if I was just able to read the words better I'd not be complaining, that's what I want to do lol. I'm on 1440p here and microsoft sells devices with higher resolutions so I don't know how much legs this argument has to keep going on. I mean this is what I see in windows system preferences promising to make things less blurry:

https://1drv.ms/u/s!AkO2l6AGLMlwhKhSgq-aamXREBO0Vw?e=01Qr5w

How is this more legible in any objective universe lol.

awinder··on Ask HN: What feature did you find after years of using macOS?
I’m on a 1440p ultrawide from this year on mojave vs latest windows 10.
awinder··on Ask HN: What feature did you find after years of using macOS?
I’ve been using windows more recently since my personal Mac bit the dust and I’m trying to decide if there’s really that much reason to own a personal Mac.

So now I realize for years I’ve been using this silent feature of macs for years called “not totally jacked up font rendering”. I would never have imagined this was a feature, but apparently there is a collective insanity in windowsland where the quality of font rendering is not just a total and utter failure. So this is my new top Mac feature.

awinder··on US to ban transactions with ByteDance and WeChat in 45 days
Yep this is a good answer. And it follows that if you’re serious about this issue & don’t just like to hear yourself talk, you should go do the work at the low level. It peeves me off to no end to see the lack of seriousness around this. It’s the same exact lack of seriousness that people had before the iraq invasion, and I pitched a fit then for no gain and I’ll do it again too!
awinder··on Gold price rises above $2k for first time
Krugman argues that there’s a special nature to the bond-gold relationship but I would argue that it’s because gold is an asset of last resort. The only thing special is that bonds have typically been an asset of last resort, but governments have sort-of taken them off the table in crisis situations.
awinder··on 1Password for Linux development preview
I’m a recent windows 10 convert from Mac and a 1password user for years, I have disagreements with my buddy who is a long time windows user along these lines _all_ the time. He thinks I’m insane for essentially paying for UI I prefer (I would disagree I think there’s some structural differences, but I’m okay with being reduced to that too). It’s like asking why someone buys anything, the products exist and sell and make some people happy while being absolutely insane to others. Such is life.
awinder··on Justice Department is scrutinizing takeover of Credit Karma by Intuit
Im starting to wonder if it’s going to be eventually cheaper for Intuit themselves if they hadn’t have been successful. It’s gonna be really expensive to buy every financial tracking startup when all you need to do for a liquidity event is pump out a free irs form-filler.
awinder··on The Truth Is Paywalled but the Lies Are Free
There's been a lot of coverage around false-flag sorts of behavior in Portland, but the fact that this thing is being pumped through the lie pipelines that originate with places like RT (Russian state-controlled media) is kinda a dead giveaway.

We can get into a nuanced discussion of "is it really lying" since there's a video, but I have not been a party to any conversations in my lifetime that start with a nuanced discussion of "is something technically a lie" that end with a good feeling in my gut. So that's kinda a clue that despite the technicalities of language something uncool is happening.

awinder··on Google to buy 6.6% stake in ADT in home security push
Google has an existing partnership with ADT for monitoring their Nest Secure product so I'm not even sure it's all about the install base. There's a lot of mutual benefits to that partnership, ADT has the existing network of people-oriented call centers and installation crew without great hardware & tech, whereas Google's tech is much better but without any of this timely & expensive infrastructure built out.
awinder··on Reviewing the worst piece of code ever
Might have been the best php programmer ever tbh.
awinder··on Ask HN: I have $450K cash, what should I do to maximize my return?
Just as some general advice, imo that’s enough money to visit with a fee-only financial advisor for some planning. I don’t think my numbers are wildly off for location but you could probably spend like a grand (.22%) to get a solid plan in place that you can ride for a while. Or like others have said, roboadvisor. I don’t think target date fund makes sense outside of a retirement vehicle but maybe that’s an option.
awinder··on MailTrackerBlocker – email tracker and spy pixel blocker plugin for Apple Mail
Just making sure but do you ever click through on an email link or do you just use it as a notification and then go and log in? I’m curious if they just need to be looking at click + open events or if that wouldn’t even help in this scenario.
awinder··on Not an Amazon Problem
Yeah that’s why this isn’t a serious argument, because no one is just going to watch a lot of jobs disappear or become automated etc without a plan. We’ve gone from “hey just do this one thing raise min wage” to “hey you know it’s gonna be painful and I don’t know fully what’s going to happen but you know, fairness”. No one would ever go for it, and for good reason.
awinder··on Not an Amazon Problem
You can’t do a rewrite on something involving 10-20M jobs without a migration plan, which is essentially why huge complex problems don’t get solved. When you get into actually coming up with real plans, you end up in webs that just touch too many people. And trust me, these are not problems that are solved by throwing money, they’re deeply serious webs of entanglement that won’t be solved with simplification.

I’ll give you one counterexample, but trust me there’s millions of them. Meatpacking is overrun with off the books labor. You could throw around $15, $30 an hour salaries and it wouldn’t matter because salary isn’t the killer. It’s lawsuits from people falling in the equipment that simply go away when the laborer wasn’t supposed to be here. It’s being able to have something like coronavirus come around and react. I’m not repping the current system but catcalls to just solve it aren’t actually helpful, they’re a big reason why we are here in the first place.

awinder··on A Surprise AWS Bill
I mean the “monstrosity of services” is a bucket holding files and a CDN. It’s 2 services. I do this for my site (that gets no traffic and hasnt been updated in years) and it’s quite nice to not have to admin a server.

Now that said it looks like his job is in cloud evangelism too so I’m sure a large part is that he wants to maintain a personal account to learn/hone skills. I’d recommend anyone do that, getting a look at aws without whatever your company is doing on top of it is pretty awesome for learning. Just don’t host massive S3 images and shoot yourself in the foot ;-)

awinder··on Homeland Security Was Destined to Become a Secret Police Force
If you live in baltimore or philadelphia you call 911 (if necessary) so that these “law enforcers” can spend some time in jail until after November when this ridiculous problem goes away.
