awayto··on 11 years of hosting a SaaS
> We started on Heroku, because in 2012 if you did any Ruby on Rails tutorial that included deploying your app, you ended up with a Heroku account.

Couldn't be more accurate. Heroku and Rails is almost as much of a throwback as Node and Express. You just had to be there. And it was great. Web dev was always a hobby for me as a teen, but then I turned to the rails book as a means of learning a professionally designed system, when I wanted to get serious as a dev. It definitely served me well. Heroku, at the time, offered a very streamlined and accessible way to integrate rails. It was a great time to learn.

Very cool. Thanks.
awayto··on Tailscale doesn't want your password
I haven't yet looked into the inner mechanics of passkeys, and the link only talks about the first login. What is the experience like when a user wants to log in from a different system? They press the "Login with Passkey" button on Device 2, and then...?
awayto··on How to Get Started with Tree-Sitter
Unfortunately not. My stint of use was focused around dynamically loading in any given tree-sitter-langaugeName package via docker and then parsing any given file type in a runtime environment, in order to coalesce differing languages' parts into a unified metadata structure.

So, I wasn't trying to identify named things, like the tags command might seem to do, but more generic parts of the langauges like function, var, import/export statements, etc. I ultimately made my own walk functionality, but pulling out those atomic parts per language is still a very heavy task (basically need a mini lexer for each lang), even though TS seems to provide all the info to do the task.

awayto··on How to Get Started with Tree-Sitter
I worked with tree sitter a bit for a small project. It seems to be the case that, while it covers a large set of languages, the actual implementation of each subset doesn't follow the exact same underlying API. And it follows that there is no universal AST parser as far as I can tell. Languages have many types of atomic parts to such an extent that unifying them is a tremendously complex task.

awayto··on ChatGPT conversations can be shared publicly
Not to distract from the post, but I can't find any outlet for support on this. I continue to be "shadow banned" from just the chat interface. Anyone else experiencing this?

For over two week, all requests in the chat UI at chat.openai.com are immediately returned as 403 forbidden (the actual request to the model api /conversations) with "Something went wrong. If this issue persists please contact us through our help center at help.openai.com.". Filing a bug report seems to not do anything. And, in true irony, OpenAI's support bot is absolutely atrocious.

Reinforcement of the response format in various contexts throughout the message have shown to be really effective to me. awayto··on Functional Web Apps – How to Build
This site pops up here from time to time. It's a great resource for understanding the components in play with some modern webapps.

I maintain a project called Awayto which follows the principles that FWA put forward, more or less. So if you're interested in this style of architecture and want a practical, functional example, check out https://github.com/keybittech/awayto

awayto··on Functional Web App (FWA)
This is really cool to see in this format. Over the last few years I have spent my free time crafting a framework under similar ideologies. I think a lot of web devs end up making similar tools throughout their career, but perhaps never get to the point of sharing what they make. I finally formalized my framework last year and am well into battle testing it with clients and different projects. https://awayto.dev

In a similar light to what this FWA group is presenting, I also have put forth some points about why this style of web dev architecture is important and effective. https://awayto.blog/posts/webapps/

Actually, I started out reading Million Dollar Consulting last year and one of the first chapters essentially talks about the importance of having a portfolio of work, and being able to capitalize off that body of knowledge within to grow more as a consultant. Well, I took that as a sign to formalize a framework that would allow me to do my development work in a much more effective manner, as well as provide more out of the box functionality for my clients.

Overall, the experience has been really positive. Obviously I don't get to use my own framework with every client, and that's a good thing. But, when working with clients who need basic business problems solved, having an FWA style framework is going to allow you to iterate so much faster than traditional MVC platforms. At least this has been my experience. Specifically to that point, with templated and loosely coupled parts, you don't have to spend too long building your web app to get it to do something exceptional.

awayto··on You Don't Need the Cloud
A lot of the comments here are about difficulty cloud tech navigation/adoption. I create a framework built on top of AWS to try to alleviate a great deal of the infra management aspects of running web applications. It sets you up with all the basics out of the box in about 10 minutes (db, api, ui, users, groups, roles).

Along the same vein as other posts in this thread, startups and contractors need instantaneous test bed environments that support a lot out of the gate, and which can be the basis to scale from. I've been a contractor off and on for a few years and have seen this need first hand. So my tool is meant to fill in the foundations of great ideas, so those ideas can grow faster. I think that's an essential trait of cloud services that you will be hard-pressed to find elsewhere.

Hey there, I work on a project called Awayto. It generates and deploys web applications to AWS with all the base line bells and whistles (db, api, ui, user mgmt, react, typescript). I enjoy working on tools for developers and this is a project that's supposed to help developer consultants. It's a full stack framework, and there are of course many ways you could help or be involved, so if it sounds interesting please check it out!

awayto··on Self-Hosting Dozens of Web Applications and Services on a Single Server
Lots of AWS frustration here, so I will mention a project I created to auto generate AWS web applications, covering what I believe are a majority of practical use cases (db, ui, api, users, roles, groups).

https://awayto.dev

https://github.com/keybittech/awayto

It's not a product, just a project. Check it out if AWS is getting you down! :)

awayto··on Self-Hosting Dozens of Web Applications and Services on a Single Server
I built a tool for deploying web apps on AWS.. https://github.com/keybittech/awayto If you look at the deployment script app/bin/data/deploy, you can break things down into manageable pieces and understand what's going on probably within a day or two given you have some baseline understanding of frameworks and APIs.

But, I totally agree that the underlying nuance is a lot to take on when you start getting into X is required for Z which connects to A, yadda yadda.

That being said, if you choose a service and invest the time to understand it, you are availing yourself to a very wide world of technology "at your fingertips." You can most certainly say the same for DIY, just different shades of what you want to be responsible for I guess.

awayto··on Ask HN: What you up to? (Who doesn't want to be hired?)
The framework was built out of my own developments as I needed to develop web applications over the last few years. I chose AWS for the original architecture because of my familiarity with the platform and relative ease of use.

Only recently have I started the process of formalizing the framework as it has existed, so there hasn't been any work done on supporting a cloudless implementation. It's on the radar (I have a notice on the top of the git readme about this very topic and needing contributors).

If you are interested in this, feel free to join the discord posted on the github. I'm very much open to discussion and dialog.

awayto··on Ask HN: What you up to? (Who doesn't want to be hired?)
I am developing a framework to spin up web applications very fast. Right now it incorporates:

- an RDS postgres instance with a curated set of DB scripts with auditing baked in

- Lambda/API Gateway based API

- fully implemented with users, roles, groups

- application level authorization

- Cognito for user authentication (sign up or admin created)

- S3/CF for hosting/files

- React frontend

- all in Typescript with a robust type-set; same types for the whole stack

- deployed via CF template along with some custom scripting I have done to tie it all together

It's been a work in progress for some time on the side, but I am now formalizing it. It might seem a bit rough on the edges at first, but it gets the job done, and can more or less be extended into other AWS services as needed. I haven't really received much feedback yet.

It's all open source, you just pay for the AWS resources, and it installs from npm and deploys in about 10 minutes based on how long the DB and CF distribution take to deploy. Here's a sped up install video (nothing glamorous, just ): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3mzwtIyt9s

And here's the git, https://github.com/keybittech/awayto

I am in the midst of drafting formal documentation, how-tos, and other media that I can share with the community to help make it easier to understand and use. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!
