avsteele··on High tariffs become 'real' with our first $36K bill
Name one
avsteele··on High tariffs become 'real' with our first $36K bill
I'm in a similar boat. Does anyone know any US PCB assemblers similar to PCBWay or JLCPCB? (e.g. small volume) I couldn't find any when i looked about a year ago
avsteele··on High tariffs become 'real' with our first $36K bill
Where are you getting PCBs assembled in the USA at small volume?
avsteele··on Backblaze: Mounting Losses, Lawsuits, Sham Accounting, Insider Selling
Very happy with their B2 storage. Easy to use, works well, prices fine. I use it as a backup target for several of my Synology NAS's. I hope they stay in business

Ken's book is good BTW. I recommend it if you are interested in this subject.
avsteele··on Everyone knows all the apps on your phone
If they just audited apps and banned companies from the app store for abuse it would do a lot to curb this behavior. This is feasible, there just aren't THAT many popular apps at any given time.
avsteele··on Can a Geothermal Startup Vaporize Rock to Drill the Deepest Holes?
your beam waist is going to increase (and intensity is going to drop) after a few hundred meters. you'd have to lower the whole laser down the hole
avsteele··on Introducing a terms of use and updated privacy notice for Firefox
Since it's mostly just people who care about this privacy who still use Firefox, these changes seem particularly tin eared.
avsteele··on PCBs, copper pours, ground planes, and you
At DC this is a good model. At higher frequencies no so much. At high freq the 'return current' is all basically right under your trace.
avsteele··on FDA proposes ending use of oral phenylephrine as OTC nasal decongestant
I knew this stuff didn't work the first time I bought it by accident because I thought it was normal Sudafed. Amazing its lasted this long
avsteele··on Google CEO says more than a quarter of the company's new code is created by AI
How does this allow them to measure the % generated by AI tooling?
avsteele··on Google CEO says more than a quarter of the company's new code is created by AI
Everyone here is arguing about the average AI code quality and I'm here just not believing the claim.

Is Google out there monitoring the IDE activity of every engineer, logging the amount of code created, by what, lines, characters, and how it was generated? Dubious.

avsteele··on FTC's rule banning fake online reviews goes into effect
I'll believe it when its enforced. The spam calls I'm getting are 'banned' to, for all the good it does.
avsteele··on Raspberry Pi announces branded range of NVMe SSDs and SSD kit
Look on e.g. Amazon/eBay for refurbished/refreshed Lenvovos and such. The m900 is a good choice.
avsteele··on Irish museum solves mystery of Bronze Age axe heads delivered in porridge box
I mean, this incident should call your assumptions about this into question.

Yes, some might be lost by random digging. But if it would not otherwise ever be found then nothing has been lost.

avsteele··on Brazil's X ban is sending lots of people to Bluesky
This doesn't make sense to me. I'm just doing to poke at one aspect.

Imagine you are a Brazilian. The government will censor these speakers whatever they appear. If you favor this ruling you are agreeing with the statement "Yes, I trust the Brazilian government to be the one to determine what is misinformation and against democracy and to make action to prevent me from seeing it"

Twitter/Musk can not substantially change your access to information as there are many other sources. The government can.

avsteele··on NASA announces Boeing Starliner crew will return on SpaceX Crew-9
Incorrect.

The number of stations does not appear in the bill.

The 500,000 charger was a campaign promise in 2020 not directly connected to the funding allocated in 2021

avsteele··on Brazil's X ban is sending lots of people to Bluesky
At this point, I'm only mildly surprised by the pro-censorship sentiments which are prevalent here at HN. Still, for those with an open mind...

Read the NY times article; it is not amazing well done but serves to show how unaccountable the orders of the judge are.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/31/world/americas/brazil-x-b...

Then read the orders from the judge (as claimed by X). "Secretly ban this sitting senator within a few hours"

avsteele··on NASA announces Boeing Starliner crew will return on SpaceX Crew-9
2030 for 500K chargers is just separate political goal, it isn't connected to the $7.5B allocated by the bill.

The bill allocates $7.5B over 5 years. He said most will be coming online 2027+ but seemed to admit that the expectation was for more to be online by now. While I agree the "9 stations for $7.5B" there are reasonable concerns here that the money will be well-spent. I can't even find anything on how much has been actually allocated to far and how many chargers are expected.

avsteele··on Suspicious data pattern in recent Venezuelan election
The National Lawyers Guild twitter profile reads:

"Human rights over property interests since 1937. Fighting for liberation, organizing in solidarity with radical movement leaders."

They are certainly not impartial.

avsteele··on FCC votes to limit prison telecom charges
What are the economics of this market?

Do the prisons pay less in overhead in exchange for the higher rates?

Or is it just that the market for phone providers isn't competitive?

According to one source (below): some prisons gets a commission on each call, which ultimately would be paid for by the users/convicts. This makes sense as a reason for high prices because you have the entity (prison admin) choosing a provider with an actual incentive to not choose the lowest cost one.

avsteele··on Family fight Samsung over fridge odour they say caused dizziness and memory loss
That professor's statement was pretty silly.

Burning electronics does have a strong, distinct odor. If they are unfamiliar with that, its totally plausible that's all that they smelled.

Refrigerators are a few PCBs, a heat pump, a closed loop refrigerant, and a cooler. There really isn't anything especially exotic there.

avsteele··on Family fight Samsung over fridge odour they say caused dizziness and memory loss
Hmm...

"I explained to the poisons hotline it wasn't just refrigerant, it was something more sinister," she said.
How would she know? Probably something electronic burnt out. Then the wife had a panic attack from over worry.

Article is interesting because of the non-disclosure clause stuff. Which, while not totally surprising I guess, is pretty scummy.

avsteele··on Writing GUI apps for Windows is painful
I tried to write a windows App recently (maybe to put in the windows store). I gave up when ...

- Tried to wade through the mess of different frameworks. Some are abandoned, they all have different feature sets etc...

- I found that I could not have anything other than FullTrust (all permissions) if my app wanted to use the/live in the system tray.

- You can't set the size of the window to match the content. You can set a size, sort of, but the min is 500x500 AND it will remember what the user's last size was so if they e.g. maximize it will be the next time its opened regardless of the program settings. In order to do this simple thing I would have to write it as a WPF app with a installer (which as of 2023 can go on the Windows Store)

avsteele··on U.S.-Saudi petrodollar pact ends after 50 years
So is this real or not? I can't find any article actually naming the 'agreement'
avsteele··on Raspberry Pi is now a public company
If you want to raise a ton of money for expansion this is (mostly) the only way.
avsteele··on Raspberry Pi is now a public company
Do they not have a fiduciary responsibility to their public shareholders now that they did not before?

If a random company with a very different mission (say, Intel) comes along and offers to purchase the company at a decent share price premium they pretty much have to take it, right?

avsteele··on Microsoft's official Minesweeper app has ads, pay-to-win, and is hundreds of MBs
Yeah it's pretty silly. My son liked to play this, and the solitaire card games, word games, all by Microsoft. They all have absurd ads and nonsense like this.

It all comes off feeling shoddy and low-class. I would think one of the world's wealthiest companies would have a bit more 'self-respect', or whatever the organizational equivalent is.

avsteele··on Gleam 1.2.0 release – Fault tolerant Gleam
Yes, i agree it does that effectively now. But what about future issues? See my post below.
avsteele··on Gleam 1.2.0 release – Fault tolerant Gleam
Until it doesn't.

It isn't the case that even if everyone agrees on the BLM, Trans rights, and the outcome of WWII will agree on future issues of the day. Thier stance sets up an expectation that the language should have an official position on these topics.

I even gave an example.

A community that fosters professionalism rather than explicit ideology won't have this problem.
