avs733··on We stopped AI bot spam in our GitHub repo using Git's –author flag
It seems like some better basic metrics should be made front and center with PRs in this day and age. Yes AI is the driving force behind the current crop of problems but there are other issues. Yes it’s accessible if you go look but the point is people don’t have time.

the rate of comits/PRs total

The rate of PRs to repos they don’t own

The reject rate of PRs

The number of ban

An estimated “AI” or bot score or status flag

There are a few better attempts at GitHub metrics calculators but I have not seen any that move beyond the paradigm of more vomits is default assumed good. It’s time to foreground quality not just quantity. The GitHub “4 kpis” are entirely action oriented.

avs733··on Driver accused of DUI tracks missing laptop to Illinois State trooper's house
At least in my state the actually high risk portion of their job…dealing with traffic collisions on the highway…is being outsourced to non police “hero units”

Tells me we can change what police are and aren’t responsible for, and it is telling which ones they want to drop and which ones they don’t.

avs733··on Canvas online again as ShinyHunters threatens to leak schools’ data
In a sense you aren’t wrong but those analogies fail at scale. It’s like saying you could replace all hr functions with a spreadsheet.

They are large databases yes but they do a lot of small and large things that that analogy glosses over

avs733··on Canvas online again as ShinyHunters threatens to leak schools’ data
Because faculty didn’t want to do it anymore. They want it handled by others but also they want oversight and veto power but also they don’t want to be bothered. But it better always work, and if they make a mistake the software is broken because don’t tell them it’s a user error they used to write Fortran.

As a faculty member at a large university…I have a deep respect for the impossible job of university IT departments.

We originally rolled our on LMS decades ago. When we switched to canvas we kept the home brew running for five years past its expiration date because faculty refused to remove their files. Finally each one was manually moved by IT for the recalcitrant old faculty.

avs733··on Canvas is down as ShinyHunters threatens to leak schools’ data
our instance went from [insert hacker leet text] to "down for scheduled maintenance" and myself and other faculty are just having the darkest humor about this.
avs733··on Canvas online again as ShinyHunters threatens to leak schools’ data
It is absolute chaos at my institution. This is the last day of finals and grades are due Monday morning. Most faculty are spending today, tomorrow, and through the weekend finalizing grades.

What we don't have access to includes:

* Already graded work

* Ungraded work

* overall adn assignment grades

* lists of students and student emails from the course

* messages from students that are often sent through gradescope

Just...complete implosion.

avs733··on iOS 27 is adding a 'Create a Pass' button to Apple Wallet
Its a blog post from the WalletWallet team about the upcoming changes that have only been reported by Bloomberg news
avs733··on The gay jailbreak technique (2025)
A gay mobile kitchen?
avs733··on Sam Altman's response to Molotov cocktail incident
If we are going to say violence isn’t okay then it is important that we be clear about the boundaries of what we define as violence.

Theft is a nice analogy here. The default model of theft is property crime but the largest type of theft is wage theft.

If we fret about violence done against individuals but not violence against groups our attention is going to end up steered in a narrow direction.

avs733··on OpenAI backs Illinois bill that would limit when AI labs can be held liable
From liability!

If this were to actually happen I can only imagine financial liability is the least of their concerns?

What scares me most about this is the narrowness of thought to match this fear with this response.

avs733··on Drop, formerly Massdrop, ends most collaborations and rebrands under Corsair
I read this twice thinking it was an April fools joke I wasn’t getting.
avs733··on Afroman found not liable in defamation case
and I imagine that if the INVERSE of this case had come up, the police suing for defamation would have been protected by qualified immunity so no lawsuit would have been possible.

The police being able to leverage civil law against citizens to control their behavior in ways that citizens cannot leverage against cannot to comment on the abuse of power is entirely unacceptable no matter what our laws and judiciary chose to allow.

avs733··on US Court of Appeals: TOS may be updated by email, use can imply consent [pdf]
>If the company violates their ToS, you can take them to court (or arbitration).

This is my favorite...how exactly can I monitor compliance? No evidence of non-compliance - get tossed out of court. No court order for discovery - no ability to monitor/gather evidence compliance.

The idea that this is even a potential for mutuallity on a TOS is just farcical.

avs733··on Judge orders government to begin refunding more than $130B in tariffs
I don't think the commenter you are responding too thinks this is a good thing - they are just describing that it is. I read it as just a blunt summary of how absurd this situation is.
avs733··on Medical journal says the case reports it has published for 25 years are fiction
out of context that makes sense...but in the context of a case report how do you implement that? The patients have privacy rights and the authors/doctors have a responsibliity to protect them. That doesn't justify this but it does force a conversation about what 'every single data point' means. Does it mean the patient's real name and social security number? their complete medical chart?

Case reports are descriptive not determinative and should be treated as such by other scholars. They are 'I saw this' not 'this is generalizably true'. They can (and often are) replicated or countered but they are not per se research as you are thinking about it. Whether it is fictitious or not, other scholars should be cautious in citing them as proof/evidence in papers that fit into the 'research' mold.

avs733··on U.S. science agency moves to restrict foreign scientists from its labs
not only that but they leveraged the 'compliance' mindset that comes with government institutions to do so.

This was first reported at least a week or two ago and only now are they getting aroun dto thinking about making it an actual rule (which takes time and process). The rules that aren't really rules for plausible deniability serve several purposes including normalizing compliance in advance.

I'll set aside opinions of the rule because people can really feel differently about the long and short term balance of security and soft power...but not rule rules is an approach to government I really struggle to see both sides of.

avs733··on The Pentagon is making a mistake by threatening Anthropic
That simply says if a company offers a service the government gets to cut the line. It doesn say I have to make them a hamburger if I’m a sushi restaurant.
avs733··on The Pentagon is making a mistake by threatening Anthropic
They are a private company they can largely sell or not sell they want. They aren’t saying they won’t build them because they are to effective they are saying they won’t build them because they aren’t safe.
avs733··on Banned in California
As just a statement of bias…the guys at that site have a pretty clear distaste for Tesla. They are industry experts and that’s where their analysis comes from, but it’s palpable. I would call it evidence versus politically based but noting it. The difference in bias though is ther snark has citations to primary sources not just wild generic claims.
avs733··on Banned in California
To be clear ….violations of their, repeatedly update, permit to paint cars. Something the website labels impossible.
avs733··on Banned in California
Feel free to provide sources for the claims
avs733··on Banned in California
He doesn’t need to refute it he just needs to offer an alternate claim.

The site provides no citations, no evidence, so there’s no need to defend the count argument or honestly even make it.

The sit isn’t just false, it is flat out disrespectful to all the workers, engineers, founders, and everyone else involved in the industries he says don’t exist that actually do exist. The site is basically “I think this is hard so no one else could possibly do it”.

avs733··on Banned in California
Or the person writing this has?

Just because it’s in GitHub doesn’t mean it’s more credible than the stuff my mother posts on Facebook about mark zuckerberg not having permission to use her photos.

avs733··on Banned in California
The site is wrong about the Fremont plant being exempted as detailed here:

https://dailykanban.com/2016/09/29/docs-reveal-teslas-produc...

(With things like…links to their permit applications, I.e., sources)

avs733··on Banned in California
I confuses “it’s hard” with “it’s banned”

It’s…not even wrong it is detached from any effort at truth.

avs733··on Banned in California
Without sources all of this is…suspicious at best.

They list playing and Cnc machining as banned and then only describe the chemicals used in playing.

There is a huge defense production industry in CA and an even larger machining industry that would be really surprised to hear that.

The largest manufacturer of machine tools in the US (Haas) is based in California.

avs733··on Tech companies shouldn't be bullied into doing surveillance
which has been warped all out of any comprehensible reality. It hinges on the idea of 'voluntarily' turning over information. Much of what is now considered information voluntarily turned over isn't even information that people know exist much less that they are turning over much less doing so voluntarily.
avs733··on ASML unveils EUV light source advance that could yield 50% more chips by 2030
thanks for the HN community - the video is how I ended up here and its one of the few social media-esque sites I bother visiting. Taught me a pile of things about coding and CS that weren't in my mechanical engineering degree.
avs733··on ASML unveils EUV light source advance that could yield 50% more chips by 2030
I didn’t, still don’t, but that’s a lost cause.

I’ll note that this video is way out of date…both in content and my skills as a speaker :P

avs733··on Trump's global tariffs struck down by US Supreme Court
If you are the risk and the insurance for that risk you aren’t a middle man you are the mob.
