avree··on AI Incident Database
It's a bit hard to take any of the aggregate stats seriously when they bucket anything from "AI made a mistake and killed someone" to "AI-Generated-Text-Detection Tools Reported for High Error Rates" into the same "incident count".
avree··on CAN Injection: Keyless car theft
You know that Toyota, the manufacturer here, is a Japanese company, right? European versus American regulations have literally nothing to do with this, which was your original point.
avree··on CAN Injection: Keyless car theft
What? This is a CAN bus hack, which is a standard that has been in EU cars for longer than US cars. I've worked with KeylessRide and also built my own hardware immobilizer/CANBUS device at a previous startup, and there is zero difference between European cars and American cars for this...

By design, all nodes on a CAN network receive all frames, which is the root of the problem. There are some differences in ECU validation, plus whether or not the vehicle supports UDS diagnostics, but these are differences by manufacturer and have nothing to do with the continent the car is being used on.

avree··on Is Y Combinator worth the money? Brutally honest review of W22 batch experience
I think it would have always been the same for overseas companies - I've had several YC-founder friends, and the experience is vastly different if you're YC-in-the-Bay versus YC-elsewhere.
avree··on Keybase.pub Shutting Down on March 1 2023
well they had raised $10 million and burned through almost all of it so I'm not sure you can describe the acquisition that effectively saved their company as "sending them down a death march"

however, it's clear you're right - Zoom doesn't prioritize the product.

avree··on Ask HN: What to do when someone clones your site?
I don't think they will have much luck, in Germany. https://www.wired.co.uk/article/inside-the-clone-factory
avree··on Tell HN: Confluent laying off 8% of staff
The money was cheap because of COVID. https://www.brookings.edu/research/fed-response-to-covid19/
avree··on NYSE Tuesday opening mayhem traced to a staffer who left a backup system running
He is, undoubtedly, a meme-stock conspiracy theorist. Only those steeped in the cult of AMC, GME, or BBBY say things like that.
avree··on Tell HN: Thank you for being fast, almost ad-free and text-only
It's like the old reddit UI, but... broken (at least on Safari on Mac OS)
avree··on GitHub Sponsors will stop supporting PayPal
Amazon just announced that they're strategic partners with Stripe. I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft had something similar cooking.
avree··on WiFi Routers Used to Produce 3D Images of Humans
Correct, this 'countermeasure' is for a fantasy world in which it's easier to compromise your router than set up a couple clients and a router nearby.

Also, realistically, wi-fi isn't the boogeyman here, even though the person you're replying to has been doom-posting about it for years - UWB and various other tech is going to make detecting location and movement from RF frequency fairly trivial.

avree··on WiFi Routers Used to Produce 3D Images of Humans
Your understanding is correct, but most of those were based on iBeacons/NFC/other tech and not Wi-Fi.
avree··on WiFi Routers Used to Produce 3D Images of Humans
Even pre-WiFi 7, there are companies such as Cognitive who allow you to detect motion (as well as occupant activity, etc.). I implemented such a system at my previous company which sold Wi-Fi.
avree··on Gail.com FAQ
Yes, that's what the link that you're commenting on says. You didn't need to do any more research, especially not into arbitration documents.
avree··on Omg.lol – A lovable web page and email address
When Gmail launched, people were writing this exact same comment about how Yahoo and Hotmail aren't going anywhere.
avree··on The Tesla Semi cab from the practical POV of someone who drives trucks
It's still got windows. Why would someone need to leave the vehicle to interact with police? I must be missing something.
avree··on We became experts on Google Play Store policy violations
I wouldn't lump Apple in with Google. In my experience they are extremely direct, and very quick to put a human on the other end of any message. Google, on the other hand, is a black box until the end - if you don't have backchannel contacts or a "friend" at Google, good luck getting any support.
avree··on An app that tells you the best time to run and pee during a movie
Covered in their marketing copy: "Built in Timer so you can enjoy using the RunPee app during a movie without disturbing those around you."
avree··on Show HN: Restfox – Open source lightweight alternative to Postman
There's zero 'relationship'. SetApp bundles popular Mac software, of which Paw is one.
avree··on I Got Banned for Life from Airbnb (2018)
This one happened to me too - except it was after the Uber asked me for my destination, and then didn't like it (I was going south from San Francisco, he wanted to stay in SF.)

Instead of just cancelling the ride, he reported me for being maskless in order to get a free cancellation that didn't hurt his driver profile. When I wrote Uber Support to explain I was wearing a mask (and had completed a mask-photo before I could request my next ride), they lectured me on mask-wearing and essentially accused me of lying. Note that I have a 4.9 star rating over 5,000+ Uber rides, so it's not like I'm an infrequent customer or repeat trouble maker.

avree··on Browser password managers – flawed security, by design
That's because this is low-effort blog spam to advertise their security consulting business.
avree··on Browser password managers – flawed security, by design
Most 2fa platforms detect and block GV (and similar VOIP numbers)
avree··on Librarian's Letter to Google Security
Yes, this one is a bit of a grey area and I'd love to hear dang's opinion on it, but personally based off the user's EDIT I have used my "flag" on this post.
avree··on Librarian's Letter to Google Security
This comment is sort of funny, because the author says that Google is being responsive but is upset at the army of HN commenters (plus the guy who posted this originally.)
avree··on Unplugged Phone Mysteries
Whoa, you read the article too?
avree··on Ask HN: I'm in a rut. How did you get out of yours?
Yes, I take Focalin XR now.
avree··on Ask HN: I'm in a rut. How did you get out of yours?
Yeah, my motivation goes up when I smoke weed, not down. And it took me until I was an adult to realize that I was using weed to treat undiagnosed ADHD. I still enjoy smoking weed, but don't have a dependence on it to function now that I have a proper diagnosis and treatment.
avree··on I built a system that takes pictures of all the airplanes that fly over my house
Why would a website who's only purpose is delivering blurry pictures need HTTPS?
avree··on Father-son duo helped techies ‘hack exams’, earn top scores for big payday
They used Remote Desktop software, as it says in the article. Same way thousands of scams are run, etc. No "hacking" here.
avree··on Apple will notify users about state-sponsored cybersecurity threats
iMessage is extremely secure and utilizes end-to-end encryption, why is this concerning to you?
