avoutthere··on Amazon warehouse workers 'peed in bottles' fearing punishment for taking breaks
I personally know a number of Amazon warehouse workers and none of them consider the workplace to be harsh. This article smacks of a smear campaign. Note the timing with this piece: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-04-13/oracle-is...
avoutthere··on FTC Warns It Is Illegal to Condition Warranty on Use of Specified Parts/Services
I wonder if Keurig will have to change their brewer warranty:

"Only the use of Keurig® K-Cup® brand pods and accessories will guarantee the proper functioning and lifetime of your Keurig® brewer. Any damage to or malfunction of your brewer resulting from the use of non-Keurig® pods and accessories may not be covered by this warranty or may result in a service fee if the damage or malfunction is determined to be caused by such use."

avoutthere··on Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook hearing was a sham
The author used the term "monopoly" six times in the article. Facebook is a lot of ugly things, but "monopoly" is not one of them.

Are you familiar with the function of volunteer fire departments in the U.S.?
avoutthere··on Portland Anarchist Road Care Fixes Potholes Anonymously (2017)
Rather than getting defensive, municipalities should support these groups much in the same way they do volunteer fire departments.
avoutthere··on We work for Google. Our employer shouldn't be in the business of war
> do these Googlers honestly think Russia and China and others aren't working on the same thing to be used by their military?

It's been my observation that vehement anti-war activists seem unwilling to admit that there are threats that need to be defended against.

avoutthere··on Ex-Facebook insider says covert data harvesting was routine
How long before it comes out that Google does the same thing with search history, Amazon with product browsing, Apple with phone usage, and Microsoft with Windows 10 usage?
avoutthere··on Self-driving Uber car kills Arizona woman crossing street
It's a sad reality, but regardless of how many times per day a pedestrian is hit by a human-driven car, such incidents involving self-driving cars will be headline news for years to come.

I wonder when Amazon will break itself apart (a la Alphabet) in order to lessen regulatory scrutiny?
avoutthere··on Why Is U.S. Health Care So Expensive? Some of the Reasons Turn Out to Be Myths
It seems as if the problem of increasing cost of medical treatment has corresponded with increasing government involvement in the health care/insurance industry.

> By other metrics, we are being victimized...

Hyperbolic indeed.

avoutthere··on How Amazon Can Blow Up Asset Management
How long before we see Amazon break themselves up as Google did into Alphabet? This seems like a solid approach to prevent government anti-monopoly action.

avoutthere··on Why the U.S. Spends So Much More Than Other Nations on Health Care
Government setting rates for medicare/medicaid reimbursement is what has driven up prices. One of the brilliant aspects of market economics is that, if allowed to operate freely, the market would establish price points for all levels of service. Government involvement is preventing the market from functioning as it should.

As the former head of a customer support department, I can tell you that the most important aspect of communication with a customer is empathy. Even more than expertise, if you can demonstrate that you care about their problem and will get to the bottom of it, the encounter will most likely result in customer retention.
