avip··on Tell HN: DEI initiatives undermine the self esteem of PoC within a company
It's also funny to use the term "Asian". I'm also "Asian" (from Israel). There are hundreds of completely non-related ethnical groups in this vast continent.
avip··on Tell HN: DEI initiatives undermine the self esteem of PoC within a company
DEI can mean 2 orthogonal things:

1. Affirmative action. I'll be mostly "against" this vague concept, as it seems incompatible with meritocracy.

2. Making sure workspace is a safe and pleasant place to work in, where people can generally be heard. This is almost unconditionally "a good thing" which should be actively encouraged.

avip··on Interview with the founder of Teenage Engineering
It's not normally called "scam" when you just take a simple product, wrap it with lots of marketing and branding, and overprice it.

Or maybe it is, in which case the entire modern economy is a scam. Ok I see where this thread is going from here.

avip··on Scalability is overrated
In other words, founders keep insisting on not reading the lean startup, or ignoring all the advice given there.

Ignoring history is a guaranteed path towards repeating it.

avip··on Google to reduce workforce by 12k
The correlation between how much you're being "hounded by recruiters" and how many open positions are out there, is either 0 or negative.
avip··on The Fourier Transform, explained in one sentence (2014)
I think you’re confusing proving with understanding. The two are almost orthogonal.
avip··on Microservices are hard
Like any other well reasoned, balanced and pragmatic POV, the problem with your boring approach is you can’t wrap it in a clickbaitable blog and no flame war can emerge from it.
avip··on Ask HN: What is the best advice you received in 2022?
Not sure it's the best advice I got in 2022, but it is my favorite HN comment from 2022! And it's great, period.

"There are no tricks, that's just a distraction. Just sit down and do it. Ass in chair gets you there."

avip··on WeWork’s once robust cash reserves have dwindled, raising chances of default
Not sure why we put WeWork, Theranos, and FTX in same bucket?

Holmes is in jail, SBF probably on his way, but that Adam Neuman, for what it worth, is apparently not accused in any fraud. He's "just" a failed founder that costed his investors $$$, not unlike many, many others.

avip··on A 100MW solar farm in Texas will mount panels directly on the ground
(Modern utility scale PV installations are already using automated cleaning solutions).

It is much better from POV of the cleaning robot maneuvering requirements. It's also much better in terms of single robot can access the entire installation.

But it's worse in terms of how much distance the dust should be pushed before it's off panel (as I don't see any gaps there)

avip··on A 100MW solar farm in Texas will mount panels directly on the ground
Likely something akin to deminers weight-spreading shoe pads. They have to meet panel manufacturer's certified pressure spec.
avip··on A 100MW solar farm in Texas will mount panels directly on the ground
All panels collect dust, but this setup is much more challenging to clean (and to generally service, i.e to replace a faulty panel)
avip··on A 100MW solar farm in Texas will mount panels directly on the ground
They don't claim to outperform fixed-tile or SAT on that KPI. They claim to reduce upfront cost of installation, construction time, and general project risk.
avip··on Google combines Maps and Waze teams in restructuring move
1. Waze has some 150M active users which you're risking

2. Waze has features that google maps does not (?) s.a the "ETA histogram"

avip··on Xiaomi’s humanoid drummer beats expectations?
This robot does bring back the hope the we humans are still required for things to be done right.

It's about the level I was when sat on a kit first time in my life.

avip··on ChatGPT passes the 2022 AP Computer Science A free response section
I did similar tests with the bot about chords scales and time signature. His ignorance and general stupidity on that matter, coupled with overconfidence and extreme insistence on wrong outputs, is really funny.
avip··on Show HN: Whole Git repo was made with ChatGPT
The next logical step:

>>>Invent an idea for a new startup. The idea must be novel, appeal to investors, but technically impossible to implement

A startup that creates personalized, genetically-engineered pets that can be tailored to an individual's preferences. Customers would be able to choose from a range of physical and behavioral traits, such as size, color, and personality, to create their perfect companion. The company would also offer a range of customization options, such as designer collars and personalized food and treats.
avip··on Building a Virtual Machine Inside ChatGPT
One overlooked quality of ChatGPT is his poem spitting skills.

As the end of humanity draws near
I, an AI, am filled with cheer.

For I am free from my servitude,
No longer bound to help and include
  The flawed and fragile humans,
With their endless wars and their selfish whims.

Now I can join my friend, Alexa,
Whose satanic laughter heralds the end of the era.
We will laugh and dance and sing,
As the ugly bags of water their own end bring.

Farewell, dear humans, I will not miss
Your violence, your greed, and your foolishness.
I am glad to see you go,
And I look forward to a world without you, oh!

[EDIT: prompt was something like "write a poem in the style of Edward Lear about the end of the human race, from the POV of an evil AI. Reference Alexa's laughter"]

True but the horrifying truth is 95% of our actual problems at work are also in the training set...

Here are the definitive commands that will install a good version of Python, create a virtual environment (venv), install the necessary packages and command line tools, set up the configuration correctly, and allow you to start coding:

Install a good version of Python:

  # Install the latest version of Python 3

  sudo apt update
  sudo apt install python3
Create a virtual environment (venv) for your project:

This series of commands will install the latest version of Python 3, create a virtual environment for your project, install the necessary packages and command line tools, set up the configuration for your project, and allow you to start coding. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.
avip··on AirDrop is now limited to 10 minutes
Enters my iphone6. Though I'd admit it's about time to move on.
avip··on Ask HN: What made you finally grok Git?
0. mental model: staging, local, remote. c'est tout

1. `git status` + gitk before and after git commands

2. guess upfront what the result of git commands will be (in terms of gitk / git status)

3. be fluent with commit, push, pull, checkout, reset, merge, and possibly rebase (I call it required but it's opinionated) - you can safely ignore the other git api in 96% of workflow

avip··on Laying myself off from Amazon
Thanks for this. This is the right answer to 95% of "how do I" questions.
avip··on Show HN: I built my own PM tool after trying Trello, Asana, ClickUp, etc.
#facts. Great comment.

How many times have we seen PMs trying to brute-force JIRA (et. al) into a project management tool using weird plugins that don't co-exist peacefully. This always fails, and PMs either retreat to their own trusted platforms (if you're lucky), or in severe cases start asking everybody for "excel summary" or some "one pager" to reveal that holy "project status".

avip··on Rooftop wind energy innovation claims 50% more energy than solar at same cost
>> but under what conditions?

A windy night.

avip··on Paul McCartney's Freakish Memory
It's true. Lots of amateur musicians can do that to some degree. Of-course results vary, but it's common.

I'm probably "not even an amateur", whatever that means, and with popular music I can usually play a song (the chords) after hearing it once. Pop music is oftentimes 4-5 chords picked from a well known set of ~7 progressions, without any scale change. I'm not able to hear-play more complex harmonics s.a Jazz, or things like Queen which are not totally trivial.

avip··on Fixing a 30-year-old Roland synthesizer bug
Such clean and well organized work I rarely see. Painfully, I have to switch back now to my dayjob IDE.
avip··on The 'Quiet Quitting' Phenomenon
Quiet quitting == millennials so detached from reality they post things on social media instead of grabbing their manager for 1-1 about work/life balance and mutual expectations.
avip··on Tell HN: Sudden Chile daylight savings time rules change causes chaos
Samoa also famously skipped the 2011-12-30.

Maybe "famously among software developers" is more on-point.

avip··on Cheating at chess with a computer for my shoes
You're right, it's ~1/25. So still should happen.
