avinoth··on Show HN: Trackiem – Custom trackers to track anything over any period of time
Thanks for the suggestion and the associated link.

You're right, the primary motivation was to do tracking for insights but down the line I would like if this can be agnostic even from that., like one feature I was planning to do is "Overlay charts" which lets you overlay data from multiple trackers to figure out patterns. On a different line, I've visioned if it could sort of have a "Streak" builder with triggers after certain "value" is achieved, which then allows it to have "goal" based tracking abilities.

Will do a write-up on the "manifesto" of the product, and will ensure the intent is clear from the landing page.

As for the pricing, I really haven't decided on one and when to charge. But rest assured, I've always planned to grandfather users who signed up before any payment plan is launched. Basically, anything you use for free will forever be free.

Thanks again.

Makes sense. I've composed screenshots of important pages here - https://www.dropbox.com/sh/3h6xg78lfc402k5/AAAwAYw3Yohsvp84c...

I understand if you meant to have it in the landing page, which I will get on it, I'm planning to have a demo account setup by end of this week.

avinoth··on Show HN: Trackiem – Custom trackers to track anything over any period of time
Bit of a backstory for how Trackiem came to be.

I've always been obsessed about tracking individual pieces of information in my life and finding patterns for certain activities. Like, activities that lead up to a headache., correlations between number of coffees I drink and number of hours I sleep and so on..

I have tried using specific tracker tools before but they always inevitably becomes not useful as they are targeted towards specific niche or goal (like habit building, budget planning, etc)., whereas I wanted something generic that offers just the right tools and lets me build my trackers to the way I want. Hence, I built Trackiem.

I've built it to be as much un-opinionated as possible, by just offering the components that makes up a tracker and let users customize it the way they want.

This is only the initial version which lets you create trackers with basic "types" and "frequencies" with reminders. I've planned exciting things down the line for though, such as customized dashboard & reminders, more nuanced tracker types - this will allow you to build your own finance tracker, time tracker and so on.

Excited for the launch and any feedback is much appreciated!

avinoth··on Ask HN: What are your go to SaaS products for startups/MVPs?
All my products mostly start with these list of essential services, but can do away with the free plans until the product grows.

* Github for repositories (Free) * Namecheap for DNS * Zoho for emails (free for 5 email accounts) * Mailgun for emails (1250 emails per month free) * Trello for project management (free) * Airbrake for error monitoring (7.5 errors per month free) * Tawk.to for customer support contact form (free) * Netlify for frontend hosting (free) * Cloudflare for CDN (free) * Hetzner for servers. (this is the only paid service :), but its only $2.70 per month for a 1Vcpu 2GB ram vps) * Paddle for payments (they take 5% cut which is very reasonable for the services they offer)

This stack pretty much allows me to just invest "time" into a project and get it out, before scaling it.

avinoth··on Announcing Trackiem
Thanks for the feedback. I submitted the direct app for Show HN few days ago and didn't make it well. I thought a write-up would help clarify the intent, and wrote this one up.

I'm planning to have a "demo" version up an running by this week end so as users can try before signing up.

avinoth··on Ask HN: What language is the most fun to learn
For me I've had most fun with Erlang. There are lots of new paradigms i discovered that I wasn't exposed to before, like, pattern matching, OTP system., Programming Erlang by Joe Armstrong is a really book and lots of credit goes to the book for making it enjoyable.

avinoth··on Show HN: DailyTechVideo – curated conference talks for full-stack developers
It's really cool. I have a suggestion/request, it would be very helpful if the videos are tagged with their length and be categorized to <30 mins, <1 hr and so on.

This will really help to quickly watch a vid with the time in hand.

avinoth··on Show HN: A simple API to store and retrieve JSON objects
Looks nice. I made a similar app few days back and made it as a self hosting one.

You can check it out here. https://github.com/avinoth/apistore

Wow, the title of profile page is now

* Marked for removal from database - in PHP programming language *

Curious what they're doing right now..

avinoth··on Ask HN: Review my product idea and my landing page
Thanks. An example use case would be, say given a movie name you want a movie's ratings in IMDB, TMDB, RT and other online reviewing site. I would create a container and add the tmdb search endpoint with the movie name which will give the list of results sorted by relevance, from that response I'll pick the movie name and TMDB rating to the final response and pipe the IMDB_ID from the response to a parameter of IMDB which will then give it's results from which I'll send the rating to the final response and so on..

The final response would be the Movie name, TMDB Rating, IMDB Rating, etc.. You can customize the key names in the final response too.

The APIs would be called sequential so a response from one API can be passed in as a parameter to the next.

As for the other parameters to be passed to these URLs, you can either send it as a parameter while calling the root URL or can be stored static in the app while configuring the container.

Via front and back entrance at the same time
avinoth··on Show HN: Hyperlink Battle – Two links compete for your vote every day
Loved the app, and the links it provided.. One problem though, after voting for a link where the success image is posted, give me a link to go to the next battle.. It took me a while to see the alphabets on top and click through it.

Also it would be nice, if the total score is displayed after voting for a content. Anyway, nice work +1

avinoth··on Ask HN: 23 year old loss in life. What to do now?
I wouldn't term your state as lost, you are just 23 and graduated from a top university. You said you always wanted to start a startup, is it only to be a tech startup? you have experience in chemistry why not try something you're good at? If at the core you really wanted to make a difference at large scale it not necessarily be your own startup but you can also help folks who are trying to achieve it.

I think at the core of your approach for starting a startup is to make money. Apologize if that's not the case but from one of your comments,

> It seemed like local startups are getting funded with half baked ideas or clones and I thought that I could do just as well as them so I was pretty hesitant to find a job

This. maybe the reason, and anyway, I wish you the best.

avinoth··on Ask HN: Request Submission of Engineering Post of Stack Adoption
pardon me if it's obvious, but what's the difference between this and stackshare.io ?
avinoth··on Resize.ly – Images resized, responsive, and retina ready
What's happening actually? I wanted to learn image processing but always get hung up. Can you just give an quick note about what's happening here? or direct me to any links?

thanks

avinoth··on Exploiting Android Users
Ofcourse it doesn't mean they are looking into it continuously. but it's way better than not looking at all.

All I'm saying is atleast a pair of eyes are looking into the app before it's reaching their users.

avinoth··on Ask HN: Is HN's account creation CAPTCHA broken?
Umm, There is no CAPTCHA verification afaik, tried few seconds before.
avinoth··on Exploiting Android Users
This. This is what pisses me off at the Android and it's ecosystem. I'm an avid android user, and more and more witnessing how it's turning exactly what windows was(is) and how crappy they are in protecting their users.

You can submit an app to the play store and get it approved within a day. I mean, come one, phone data are some of the valuable possessions one has in this century and they care less about it being abused. I wish there can be a tightly knit app store similar to iOS with stringent reviews & regulation, but I know it's never going to happen.

avinoth··on Show HN: Nuggets – Remember everything you read or learn
Hmmm, I saw your pitch to YC fellowship through topcharts yesterday and now you've made a Show HN with a lifted design of rooms.me? pretty bad move IMO.

The fact it's lifted really clouds anyone to look at the idea or the concept and provide feedback here, change it for the better.

avinoth··on Y Combinator Fellowship 2015 Application Videos
Or is this just a way to keep topchart at the top?

The second part really is irritating, given that new products are at the bottom of the pit and hidden under multiple 'Load More' with the slightest chance of anyone resurrecting it.

avinoth··on A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, nuclear scientist and former president of India, has died
I once met Sir Abdul Kalam at a scholarship event for only school students. I was 14 at that time and after he had given his speech he walked through the auditorium and asked "what they wanted to become?" to random kids.

I still remember to my heart when he came to me and when I replied I wanted to become a software engineer he smiled and replied "And when you become, become a good one".

Really a great loss for India.

avinoth··on Ask HN: Whats the worst startup idea you've heard, which turned out to be genius?
I still think Snapchat is a dumb idea. Maybe well executed? I tried myself to start using it, but everytime I install it, I'll uninstall after few minutes..
avinoth··on Ask HN: App for taking attendance ?
Without specific hardware to it, I don't think so.

But you can always use your Wi-Fi router to detect the unique number of devices connected but that still rules out people connected through data plans.

Payrollhero has an attendance management app for office, but not for events as such.

If you don't mind using a separate hardware density[0] came out recently and looks very promising.
