Since macOS went to a yearly cadence, I usually upgrade during Christmas break, this allows for a couple of point releases to work out the kinks. I won’t be upgrading this year. I hope macOS 27 fixes this abomination. Otherwise, this 30+ year Mac user will be moving on…
I know, the repairability isn’t great, and they’re not upgradable at all. macOS can be annoying and restrictive. But life is short, so I just buy MacBook Pros. I wasted too many hours in my 20s getting Linux to work on the desktop (not to mention a laptop).
AI is breaking more than interviews. I recently overheard someone who is studying to be a psychiatric nurse practitioner (they are already a RN) via an online program say “ChatGPT is my new best friend.” We are doomed.
I don’t get the hype either. Every time I’ve tried to use tools like pyenv or pipenv they fall down when I try to install anything that doesn’t provide wheels (GDAL), so I give up and stick to pip and virtualenv. Does uv let me install GDAL without hassle?
This sounds similar to AWS services depending on DynamoDB, which sounds like what happened here. Even if under the hood parts of AWS depend on Dynamo, it should be a walled-off instance separate from Dynamo available via us-east-1.
Also, Windows containers are a thing (not that I’ve ever used them). Shouldn’t it be possible to containerize old games bundled with versions of win32 libraries that were stable when the game was released? Then the games could be run in perpetuity so long as the low-level interfaces needed by the container runtime is maintained.
> could quickly surpass what humans are capable of and solve problems that have vexed society for millennia.
Bunk. Almost all of our vexatious problems are so because we lack the social and political tools to bring to bear existing technologies to address them. “AGI” will do nothing to address our social and political deficiencies. In fact, AI/AGI deployed by concentrated large corporations will only worsen our social and political problems.
We once had a glass baking
pan EXPLODE!!! after being taken out of the oven and placed on a cold stovetop, but with the window open in early December. (We lived in an apartment that had free heat that we couldn’t control so we often had to open the kitchen window when baking during heating season.)
Yeah, I think this is why starting with a smaller part(s) of a big system that is more-or-less working and building on that is maybe the best we can do.
Yeah, except Apple dogfoods macOS to build most of the software for Macs and everything else they make. Presumably they rely on UNIX-like tools and would have to retool as well. So why mess with what’s working for them and others?
The just-released MAHA report[1] mentions PFAS limits for drinking water to be enforced by EPA. Hopefully the unusually extreme contradictions in policy force a change.
And I will continue to use non-upgradable Macs because, while I miss tinkering with and upgrading my computers, I simply don’t have time for it anymore.
Foundries aren’t the only special case. The test should be, if we can’t afford for it to fail, it shouldn’t be left to the market. Another example? Farms. Also healthcare (expect to hear more on this front in the next few years as more and more hospitals go under, especially in rural areas).
And the problem for Capitalists and other anti-humanists is that this doesn’t scale. Their hope with AI, I think, is that once they train one AI for a task, it can be trivially replicated, which scales much better than humans.
Have you tried conda? Since the integration of mamba its solver is fast and the breadth of packages is impressive. Also, if you have to support Windows and Python with native extensions, conda is a godsend.
