avemg··on Zillow surprises investors by buying up homes
What's FSOB? Was it just a typo of FSBO (as in for sale by owner)?
avemg··on How to write an IRC bot
Can't speak for OP, but my progression went like this starting in 1995:

- Start wasting lots of time in MSN chatrooms

- Parents cancel MSN and switch to local ISP. Mourn loss of chatrooms.

- Discover IRC using the mIRC client

- Start playing around with mIRC scripting

- Get into Linux because that's what the crowd I hung out with on IRC was using

- Switch to epic and BitchX and start scripting on this clients

- Get into eggdrops and start scripting those and then start looking through the actual source code and making changes

- Start writing my own bots

Amazing how much my current career as a software dev is owed to things I learned because I liked "wasting" time chatting online.

avemg··on Building blocks of Amazon ECS
Of course it's not unreasonable to do that. The problem is that the analogy was a terrible one.
avemg··on Snow shovelling can kill
In my experience, it's usually 24-48 hours after the snowfall ends so there's plenty of time to get it done. Also in my experience, it is very rarely enforced. In many places, the sidewalk is the only safe place to walk the street so it's a real drag when someone doesn't clear their sidewalk. You either trudge through the snow or risk life and limb walking in the street. If you own property, you're responsible for keeping the sidewalk clear and it's your duty to the community to do it.
avemg··on A preview of the U.S. without pensions
There isn’t a good tax-advantaged alternative if you’re an employee with access to a 401k. If you’re under the income limit, you can make deductible contributions to an traditional IRA but that’s capped at $5500 per year vs $18,000 for the 401k. Plus there’s no company match there. The best practice is to contribute to your 401k up to the employer match and then contribute the rest to an IRA. Once you’re at the IRA limit you comtribute the rest to the 401k.
avemg··on Data Classes for Java
Probably to avoid making 'data' a reserved word and breaking a ton of code that used 'data' as a variable name. Prior to Java 5, 'enum' was a very popular variable name too.
avemg··on Paying top employees the highest salaries in the market
I suppose his comment was vague enough to interpret it however you want. To me, he's lamenting top talent being paid top dollar to work on better ways to get people to buy tchotchkes.
avemg··on Take Naps at Work
Susquehanna International Group.

avemg··on CEOs Want Their Offices Back
I admittedly used 'stealing' as a shorthand for copyright infringement so I'll rephrase: How is it not copyright infringement?
avemg··on CEOs Want Their Offices Back
It's one thing to find a loophole in their paywall to view their content on their site. It seems to me that it's quite another to scrape their content and serve it up somewhere else in its entirety.
avemg··on CEOs Want Their Offices Back
How is this not just stealing their work?
avemg··on Survivorship Bias
You're forgetting also that a "serious person" is probably classified by their success at their business.
avemg··on A man wouldn’t leave an overbooked United flight, so he was dragged off
There was no reason for this to even get to a point where physically removing a passenger who did nothing wrong was necessary. There was a very simple solution here: United wanted 4 seats, offered some vouchers, and got no takers. At that point, you start sweetening the deal for giving up your seat until you get some takers. I guarantee it wouldn't have taken much.
avemg··on FCC chief wants smartphones’ hidden FM radios turned on
Submitted title gives the impression that he's going to do something about it. Actual article title: "FCC chief wants smartphones’ hidden FM radios turned on, but won’t do anything about it"
avemg··on Car allergic to vanilla ice cream (2000)
In addition to that, there's no way the engineer waited until subsequent nights to try other flavors.
avemg··on Americans Are Putting Billions More Than Usual in Their 401(k)s
Why do you think the funds in your 401k are better than you could ever get in your IRA? You can open an IRA account anywhere you want. If the funds available where you are now aren't good, just move somewhere with better choices.
avemg··on Intuit sells Quicken to private equity firm in management buyout
I've used both. YNAB is not even close to a replacement for Quicken.
avemg··on Internet Access Is Finally Permanently Tax Free in the U.S.
Perhaps you're just exaggerating to make your point, but I'm quite confident that you've never had a $50 steak end up anywhere close to $100 due to taxes and tips.
avemg··on Tableau stock down almost 50%
Trusted Authentication is a poor solution to the problem of how I can embed views in my web app without having the end users of my web app have Tableau server accounts. For the following reasons:

- I have to explicitly add each server IP address. I have no way to trust an entire subnet or range of addresses. This is a huge problem in an auto-scaling app server environment where I don't know the IP addresses my app servers will have. It is a major annoyance to developers whose DHCP-assigned, dynamic IP addresses keep changing.

- There is no API for adding trusted IP addresses. It is a manual process.

- The Tableau server must be stopped and restarted to add new trusted IPs.

avemg··on How Being Named the 'Best New Restaurant in America' Hurt My Business
Eastern European wine that didn't pair with the food. Agree or disagree on the value of that criticism (never been there, wouldn't know a wine that didn't pair even if I had been), but don't turn the parent's comment into some kind of prejudiced statement about all Eastern European wine.
avemg··on This Is Not a Day Care. It’s a University
Why do you assume he didn't? It's quite possible to have this conversation one on one and then use it as an opportunity to address a wider audience. They are not mutually exclusive.
avemg··on Moon landing tapes got erased, NASA admits (2009)
I think that even if you expected them to become commonplace, you would realize what a momentous event in history the first landing would be.
avemg··on Big Banks Lock Horns with Personal-Finance Web Portals
As a (reluctant) Quicken user, I was not aware that Express Web Connect credentials are stored on Quicken servers. Do you have anything to back that assertion up?
avemg··on More parents, students saying 'no' to homework
> while the kids are just choosing the thing that is not total bullshit and is actually useful for something.

This assumption borders on absurd.

avemg··on More parents, students saying 'no' to homework
What is the point of your comment exactly?
avemg··on The Personal Airplane Is Taking Off
Takeoffs are optional, landings are mandatory.
avemg··on Big Price Increase for Tuberculosis Drug Is Rescinded
What a boon this is for Turing. I'm willing to bet most of the public will not realize it's not the same drug from the earlier price hike story.
avemg··on Google Will Soon Start Punishing Mobile Sites that Use Annoying App Install Ads
In and of itself I really like this move, but I have to wonder if it's good thing in the long run to allow Google to assert its vision of good UX on the entire web. Where's the line? Of course nobody is forcing websites to do anything, but Google is such an important traffic driver it's hard to imagine a site not having to comply to survive.
avemg··on HitchBOT destroyed in Philadelphia, ending U.S. tour
I'm sad to say it, but that was my initial thought as well. In fact, it calls to mind the Mooninite Bomb Scare [1].

Is there a way for me to tell you which restaurants I've already been to so you don't send me there?
