avasylev··on Blue-collar wages are surging. Can it last?
YouTube is awesome for DIY, I moved to older house two years ago and with youtube helps I've added crown moldings, repainted all rooms, replaced baseboard, built patio, deck - lots of fun, I think without youtube I wouldn't done any of it, zero experience before. Funny, my dad did a lot of renovations, and a lot of times I'd get more details/better tips on youtube than asking him :) But youtube is great for common DIY projects - how to add crown molding - tens of really good detailed videos. But if project is less commonly done by DIY folks, not that much info - I've needed to replace exterior window trim - not that much, people usually hire for that.

DIY subreddit is also a good place to search and ask questions.

I don't think roofers are good example, not sure where you live, but last summer I got roofers scheduled in a week (Boston area). By locally known construction company, I got estimate and contract by American owner/sales man - he probably does well, but the actual work was done by Brazilian crew, which I'm guessing was mostly illegal immigrants likely paid less than minimum wage. From my observations with neighbors and friends, all roof work done in the area is by Brazilian crews (I don't know why Brazilian specifically, but that how it is). Good luck competing wit them. Another anecdote example is small framing company owner (originally from Russia), mostly hires illegal Russian immigrants who work for near minimum wage. The owner may do well, but not the rest of the crew.
avasylev··on To Understand Rising Inequality, Consider Janitors
Funny that comparison with the trees can be applied in a different way - you do need to cut high trees if you want to grow smaller trees in the same place.

This spring I cut very high pine because it shadowed my entire backyard and I want to grow more smaller trees on the perimeter.

avasylev··on Dealing with IPv6 fragmentation in the DNS
It's not just convenience for anycast addresses, with multiple pathes and anycast if your round robin packets across different routes, you may end up receiving them in two different locations (ok for UDP, but TCP broken completely). Anycast is widely deployed now and imho ECMP support is now considered "standard". I'm not sure what are other alternative solution to ECMP that don't require looking into TCP headers.
avasylev··on California’s Housing Crisis Reaches a ‘Breaking Point’
I like idea of taxing higher unoccupied homes. If someone wants to make investment, great make investment and either pay high taxes (support folks who do live there) or have to rent it.
avasylev··on An excerpt from “The One Device” – origin story of the iPhone
In the end iPhone added billions to the company and shareholders, but interesting if all these engineers who spent nights and weekends to make that happen got an extra pay for that. Not much about that in the article, just the praise for extra work. If I remember correctly from iCon book, the was period when engineers on Steve's jobs team where paid less than in other teams in Apple. This would really suck working weekend and creating multibillion dollar product, but getting regular salary as the rest of the folks in the company.
avasylev··on Anonymized list of engineering salaries from bootcamp grads
For my team you can email me at "jobs.av (at) outlook.com", but you can see from glassdor same salaries at Microsoft,Gooogle,Amazon are hiring in Kendall square.

If you are ok commuting to Cambridge MA, you can get the SF figure +/- you cited as developer (assuming proper skills/experience) and still live in NH. Not a great commute, but I know a few folks who commute from NH. If you're interested, my team is hiring :)
avasylev··on Websites people say have changed their lives
Mr money mustache

After living in US for a year or two, was very interesting to discover alternative view on "typical" lifestyle. While I don't agree with all his recommendation, I did buy cheap small car :)

avasylev··on Ask HN: 50 job applications, 15 interviews, 7 onsites, and no offer – what next?
CEO is just publicly visible example, but at every level in Microsoft there're Indian, VP, managers, product managers, principal developers, regular developers. I think you can just browse/search Microsoft product managers thru linkedin to verify that. I'd be very surprised to see any bias towards any nationality at MS, given >50% of employees are foreign.
avasylev··on You can’t fix diversity in tech without fixing the technical interview
Yes if you need specificly Ruby dev, you ask Ruby (though only if you need it now right away, may as well hire contractor for a few months in this case). Imho smart developer can pick up Ruby fast (or other stack fast) and that's the benefit of algorithm related question - you don't have to pass on candidate that don't have experience in your stack.
avasylev··on You can’t fix diversity in tech without fixing the technical interview
Yeah I'm not arguing it's suboptimal, but I don't see better suggestion. What are you doing instead?

"Assessing the capabiliyt and trajectory, willing to learn and adapt" - that's the intent of the algo/data sturcture related questions. The questions are not about knowledge of specific algo, but assess way of thinking and write some code. Typically solution include recursion, nested loops, pointers/references, some not-trivial composition, etc. I'm never expecting candidate to know the specfici algorithm righ away.

avasylev··on You can’t fix diversity in tech without fixing the technical interview
Agree process isn't great, if I knew better practical approach I'd use it instead.
avasylev··on You can’t fix diversity in tech without fixing the technical interview
You can't make conclusion just from second argument alone. It's not hazing ritual because my first point. But I also think knowing them is useful, but I see a lot of people arguing it not needed at all. So what I tried to say in second, that regardless of what one thinks on usefulness of Algo knowledge, there's no excuse to ignore algorithm and expect to pass interviews.
avasylev··on You can’t fix diversity in tech without fixing the technical interview
The fact that there're more Russian/Indian woman I think is because they are from immigrant families where husband is a developer. I'm developer and I met my wife at work back in Ukraine. But if you look % of woman developers in Ukraine, it's the same as in US. A lot of my friends taught their wifes to become QA\developers after they moved to US and wife's profession didn't transfer to US well. Imho, entering IT is not that hard even without prevous experience, you do need to put hours to learn/practice, but unlike many other professions you can do that by just sitting at home and spending couple hundreds on books/video courses.
avasylev··on You can’t fix diversity in tech without fixing the technical interview
I have the same conclusion. The pipeline problem cited in the article is real problem, imho all the diversity efforts have to be directed at schools and parents. This is were the decision is made for college. After that you can't do much. My team is mostly male, we'd be happy to hire female developer, I think being a female would actually help to pass interview. But the resumes we see are all male, with very rare exceptions. My analogy for the situation are as with seeds, if you only planted "potatos" in spring, there's not much you can do in autumn to get more "tomatos". (hope this is not offensive analogy in anyway, English is not my native language)

Situation with lack of female developers is not US-specific. I went to college in Ukraine, of ~100 sudents on computer science faculty, less than 10 were woman.

avasylev··on You can’t fix diversity in tech without fixing the technical interview
I'm one of the people who ask those algorithm/white board questions. I've read a lot criticism on this topic, here're my reasons to stil keep asking these questions:

1) Working on algorithm problem requires very little in common between interviewer and interviewee. I'm C++/C#, I won't be able to give Ruby dev a real world task and evaluate it properly. Algo/data structure problems are universal and looks similar in any language. In my practice I completely failed to make any conclusions by talking about previous experience. It was not clear to me what person actually did vs what was already on the project, may as well just fixed couple UI bugs on the complex project. This part might be might personal failure as interviewer, but it was it is, and I've seen enough developers with years of experience who barely code. So unfortunately having great resume doesn't prove anything.

2) Everyone knows that big tech companies ask these questions. Knowing that you didn't take to prepare, says one of two things to me: you don't find it interesting topic/usefull or you don't have enough grit to go thru that. When I prepared for the interview I went thru two algo books, it took some time but it was easy for me, I did enjoy the learning part, yes it's not something I use every day. But learning things is a trait of good developer, knowing fundamentals if part of that. Some folks found it useless, but since it's known fact that's being asked on interiewes, motivated developer would spend time and learn it. Over the years at work, we have to learn things that are not interesting and that I'd rather choose not to know at all, same as algorithms to some people. If you can't make yourself learn algorithms to pass interview, likely you wont learn things for the work too.

avasylev··on How Home Loans Have Changed since 2000
I did the same, with me as only applicant, mostly because it was slightly less paperwork. One possible drawback is that you can't count two incomes, just the applicant income. Though "affordability limit" that bank calculates (at least in my experience) is very stretched, I wouldn't be able to pay the max bank was ready to loan.
avasylev··on Project delays: why good software estimates are impossible
Could you share more details on how you used historic estimates? You basically described me. I've never found historic estimates useful in practice, of course I haven't tried to hard, but over the years can't think even single case I'd find useful to use some old estimate.
avasylev··on Microsoft Acquires Xamarin
Does anyone know if most of Xamarin team located in Boston? The web sites has San Francisco as headquarters, but for some reason I always thought company is mostly in Boston. Curios how much this acquisition increases Microsoft's dev center in Boston.
avasylev··on Big Company vs. Startup Work and Compensation
Over long enough period of course each will decline. But within 5 years risk is small.
avasylev··on Big Company vs. Startup Work and Compensation
Stock bonus for Sr Dev at microsoft is up to 30% of base(vested over 5 years). That won't hit 100k even if you are at fifth year. Is it typical for google, facebook to give 100k in stocks per year (assuming they vest more a less over same 5 years or so).
avasylev··on Employees at Airbnb, Square and Stripe Are Spending 50%+ of Income on SF Rent
Problem with high housing cost is that it drives up prices for all things in the area - from fastfood to haircut and day care. Of course iPhone, cars cost the same, but all the local services would cost more.
avasylev··on In Defense of the Midwest
Wellesley MA is one of the most expensive suburbs of Boston with home prices above million, most of IT guys would have to work day and night to live in that laid back culture :)
avasylev··on What is really happening in Ukraine
I'm not familiar with the source, but abstract you cited is manipulation. There's no trained militants, nazi, etc. Such texts are used to divide East/West Ukraine, so current regime can survive (classic divide and conquer).
avasylev··on What is really happening in Ukraine
I'm serious, I lived 25 years in Western Ukraine and I don't remember single person having issues because of being Russian. A lot of my friends are Russian and they freely spoke Russian as their everyday language (not just at home).
avasylev··on What is really happening in Ukraine
These protest are against Yankukovich and his regime. Not against Russians. A lot of activists on maidan speak Russian, including Klichko who speaks Russian better than Ukrainian. Plus Lvov is very popular among Russian tourists, still no one was hurt.
avasylev··on What is really happening in Ukraine
You should have also cited some Russian news... But there's some truth in this - 'Svoboda' is indeed far-right party, but it definitely doesn't have trained militants and I don't recall any "hate crimes against migrants and political opponents". 'Svoboda' is only one of the forces, having or not having Svoboda there doesn't change anything.
avasylev··on What is really happening in Ukraine
This is ridiculous... Except of few crazy people no one wants ethnically pure Ukraine. I grew up in western Ukraine and I have never seen single person discriminated for being Russian. I don't know why would you post that wiki link, WW2 situation was complex, but 100 years passed and it has nothing to do with current situation.
