austinthetaco··on Introduction to Obsidian
A lot of people view that as pretty costly for what is incredibly small amounts of data in the scope of things. for half that cost you can get 100gb of storage through google and have it synchronize all my docs AND my pictures and videos and anything else I want, so by comparison $4 can seem like a lot for note synchronization.
austinthetaco··on Ollama is now powered by MLX on Apple Silicon in preview
Have you played around with any of the Hermes models? they are supposed to be one of the best at non-refusal while keeping sane.
austinthetaco··on From zero to a RAG system: successes and failures
i assume based on their concerns of the hetzner pricing that they didnt want to pay for voyage/turbopuffer. unless there are free versions of those products that I'm unaware of, but I'm only seeing paid.
austinthetaco··on My astrophotography in the movie Project Hail Mary
there is a stark difference between a division aimed at developers attempting to astroturf on a tech industry (mostly developer) news aggregator and a movie studio.
austinthetaco··on My Astrophotography in the Movie Project Hail Mary
Under the assumption that amazon has decided to astroturf on this niche tech news site, that is still okay and allowed to do as long as the article provided is interesting. There are countless posts here which are just blogs from various companies, sometimes posted here by the companies themselves. Meta, Apple, small startups, movie companies, whatever. It's all allowed here as long as the content posted has substance and is interesting, thats all. What's important is that the comments are productive and interesting and not being used as a soapbox, which is likely why your parent comment is negatively voted. There are countless platforms for you to suggest others not see a movie, but a hn post about astrophotography is not that.
austinthetaco··on My Astrophotography in the Movie Project Hail Mary
If you have some proof of astroturfing you should write a blog and then share on hn, it might make for a very good post here. otherwise it feels wildly inappropriate (not to mention incredibly unlikely that they would spend marketing money on astroturfing here of all places). Andy Weir has written some books that are incredibly successful in the tech industry circles with Hail Mary being the current most popular if not slightly under The Martian, chances are there's just going to be a lot of talk about it. But even if there is astroturfing, telling people to not watch the movie in a thread where someone is showing off their space photography is inappropriate and misplaced.
austinthetaco··on My Astrophotography in the Movie Project Hail Mary
This is hn not reddit. This feels like a wildly out of place and inappropriate comment for this kind of discussion.
austinthetaco··on Hypura – A storage-tier-aware LLM inference scheduler for Apple Silicon
There are many other reasons someone might want to run a model locally outside of cost savings, ownership of data flow and use in locations without internet to name a couple.
austinthetaco··on Nvidia NemoClaw
This is so incredibly accurate. I see all these side projects people are spinning up and can't help but think "Sure it might work at first but the first time i have to integrate it with something else i'll have to spend a week trying to get them to work. Hell that'll probably require an annoying rewrite and its not even worth what I get out of it"
austinthetaco··on Nvidia NemoClaw
I think this is a fundamentally flawed perspective on the role and experience of a senior. It's a managers role to coordinate junior engineers. The difference between junior and senior is knowing where and when to do what at an increasing scale as you gain experience.
austinthetaco··on Claude Code is suddenly everywhere inside Microsoft
It's all contextual. Sometimes, particularly when it comes to modern frontends, you have inescapable boilerplate and lines of code to write. Thats where it saves time. Another example is scaffolding out unit tests for series of services. There are many such cases where it just objectively saves time.
austinthetaco··on Claude Code is suddenly everywhere inside Microsoft
I believe the "look at all the lines of code" argument for LLMs is not a way to showcase intelligence, but more-so a way to showcase time saved. Under the guise that the output is the/a correct solution, it's a way to say "look at all the code I would have had to write, it saved so much time".
austinthetaco··on Dithering – Part 2: The Ordered Dithering
Outside of being informative in a really fun way (I learned far more in a couple minutes than I thought I would), that website is stunning. I've been a web dev for over 10 years and I'm still baffled at how people make sites like this, does anyone have any info or resources on how to go about making these sorts of transitional 3d sites beyond just "learn threejs"?
austinthetaco··on Article by article, how Big Tech shaped the EU's roll-back of digital rights
Does that include not using AWS or anyone that is a host interface to AWS? Does that include social media like hacker news or instagram? I have no stakes here (I'm an American who doesn't run a tech business) but it seems like it would be unfathomly difficult if not impossible to avoid US tech altogether.
austinthetaco··on Htmx Is the Future
NodeJS is one of the most popular API servers out there. Express is wildly popular, more popular than ASP.net laravel according to the professional developer survey https://survey.stackoverflow.co/2022/#most-popular-technolog...
austinthetaco··on Htmx Is the Future
no. NodeJS is different than NPM (which is often used to install react/vue). NodeJS is the backend technology
austinthetaco··on Htmx Is the Future
because many people wouldn't use the product or you would have to maintain multiple codebases for the various operating systems and devices (including mobile).
austinthetaco··on Htmx Is the Future
according to the latest stackoverflow developer survey, NodeJS is extremely common and used quite a bit more than things like ASP.net (https://survey.stackoverflow.co/2022/#most-popular-technolog...)
austinthetaco··on Htmx Is the Future
I would think you have something else wrong with the design. I've worked on some pretty complex and large react apps that worked flawlessly on some low-end mobile browsers. Maybe you're accidentally duplicating a LOT of dom nodes?
austinthetaco··on When and how slow motion makes products more luxurious
Wouldn't it be the opposite to get slow mo? shoot in 30 but playback at 24?
austinthetaco··on Shopify Is Illegal in Germany
I'm unfortunately able to find it, but I was pretty sure a lot of the restrictions around doing business in the EU require a certain $ amount transacted or web traffic. Citation definitely needed but that would make sense, as it's how a lot of laws are written.
austinthetaco··on Oxford University Press’s new logo is unfathomably bad
You seem to be discussing individuality in style choice, while totally ignoring capacity for individuality within the style that is en vogue. Brutalist/minimalist logos with modern san serif fonts don't leave much room to explore for individuality. Meanwhile art nouveau or 80s sci-fi for example had a LOT of overhead for flexing individuality.
austinthetaco··on I'm an addict
This is pretty adjacent to some of the stuff I've been thinking about as of recent. Maybe I'll give religion a try.
austinthetaco··on Blender 3.1
I've dipped my toes into Blender, Cinema4d, and Unreal. At this point in the game what's the use for blender moving forward besides modeling? Seems like the real-time lighting in the latest UE (lumen) along with their Nanite system puts UE way ahead of Blender outside of the modeling aspect.
austinthetaco··on Ask HN: Single-person creations that have stood the test of time?
Lucas Pope is for sure a solo dev. He wrote a custom shader for Obra Dinn while he was also writing the storyline. It's a pretty incredible feat.
austinthetaco··on Show HN: Simula One – Portable Linux VR Computer
I don't see myself ever buying one until you figure that out. I'm willing to bet you even take video calls in the making of this headset talking with different people. It's such a crucial piece in this remote work world.
austinthetaco··on Show HN: Simula One – Portable Linux VR Computer
Looks like a very interesting prospect for a laptop replacement. One small question I haven't seen answered here is if you can plug in an external display, or how you plan to handle web conferences. Most orgs I've worked for like you to have a webcam on, and see others. I'm not sure how that would practically work if they see a webcam of someone with their headset on, would make for a pretty akward meeting.
austinthetaco··on Remix – A framework focused on web fundamentals and modern UX
I specialize in working with startups and small development teams getting their tech stack up and running or fixing growing pains. I must have worked with hundreds of teams at this point, and not once has it been standard fair. You are MASSIVELY conflating noticing a UI inconsistency with analyzing usability metrics, the two things aren't even in the same arena, and the fact that you would compare the two gives me the idea that you may be on the more junior side.
austinthetaco··on Workers quit jobs in droves to become their own bosses
Something that gets me is how to even get started down the path of being your own boss. The insane networking required to keep up a contract queue is a lot. I'd love to setup an ecommerce business or side business, but there is so much clutter out there on the internet about getting started, it's hard to find the needle in the haystack for how to do it right. I'm a web dev with about 10 years of experience, but my business know-how is basically at 0. Anyone have suggestions on where to start?
austinthetaco··on The Yamaha DX7 synthesizer's clever exponential circuit, reverse-engineered
Your circle of friends who code is either small or young. This site was foundationally mostly coders for a very very long time. Often times technical articles and codebases would pop up and large discussions had. Sad to see that's the upcoming perception.
