austerity··on Why save a language?
As the man in the back row, I am not convinced. He reduces the need to save languages to the need to save cultures and leaves it at that, implicitly assuming the latter to be an axiom. To me it's even more obviously false. Plus, he completely fails to consider the downsides of people speaking different languages which are enormous (as pointed out in the Old Testament). Yes, I realize a person can speak more than one language. And I am all for preserving for the sake of understanding. But using humans as storage devices sounds a little selfish coming from a linguist.
austerity··on The drug revolution that no one can stop
I wish so much to hear at least a semi-coherent response to this from the pro-prohibition crowd.
austerity··on The drug revolution that no one can stop
Yep. Not sure how good this particular source is but it was in the mainstream news recently. http://ibnlive.in.com/news/cannabis-helps-shrink-aggressive-...

With many substances the legal risks are incomparably higher than the health risks. But it's not even the point. The illegality simply makes safer/more predictable substances much harder to obtain.
austerity··on After 7 years of blogging in German, I am switching to English. Here is why
Sill, one "bad" language is better than many slightly better ones.
austerity··on After 7 years of blogging in German, I am switching to English. Here is why
That kind of supports your point though.
austerity··on Why I’m Giving Up My Passport
Doesn't your experience prove the parent's point? For 23 years you've been a productive law-abiding member of society but were stripped of rights just because you are an "alien". Now that you have joined the club you can support similar treatment of others.
austerity··on GitHub blocked in Russia
Interesting... Google Translate did a very decent job on the article, but the comments are all kinds of hilarious. Looks like informal speech is much harder to translate correctly. Although on the second thought it's not surprising.
austerity··on Testing Legal Highs Would Save Lives
> the undesireables are the poor

No, that doesn't work. The inequality here is minimal.

austerity··on Can Mushrooms Treat Depression?
Aprophene (Taren), a soviet drug seemingly unknown outside of ex-USSR. It was included in the standard civil defense medkit as an antidote against some specific group of chemicals. The most famous substance in the same pharmacological group is Datura the effects of which also last for several days, or so I heard.
austerity··on Testing Legal Highs Would Save Lives
Sorry, but that's an outright conspiracy theory you have there. The drug policies are nothing but a populist response to the public demands to "do something" by politicians who know no ways to deal with undesirable phenomena other than trying to ban it. The same knee-jerk reaction is behind many if not most policies (most famously, rent controls).

In my country there are no private prisons and no racial minorities to criminalize but the drug laws are just as bad as in the US. Actually, much worse. And if you go to the comments section under any article about legal highs on the local news sites, most people are demanding even more draconian measures, including death penalty for possession.

austerity··on Can Mushrooms Treat Depression?
> was a concern that my mental state would be permanently affected by the experience,

Yup, that's the beginner's curse. Every single person I know who ever tried potent psychoactive substances had this experience at least once. My worst was when I didn't know that the drug I took lasts for several days. Waking up the next day after the trip and realizing I am still not my regular self was a lot more terrifying then the violent hallucinations I had the day before.

austerity··on Drug addiction: The great American relapse
It's quite telling that the heroine chose to sell her oxycontin and buy heroin instead of telling her doc she's hooked and suffering withdrawal.
austerity··on The New York Times Calls for Marijuana Legalization
Well, all the empirical evidence suggests otherwise. So by resisting the change you are helping inflict damage on more lives.
austerity··on Germany is pressuring Neocities to censor a disclosure of their censorship
Every single law limiting access to information ends up being abused to create censorship in favor of somebody's selfish interest, political or otherwise. Privacy laws? Abused. Libel laws? Abused. Copyright? Abused all the god damn time.

When it comes to knowledge, taboos and restrictions are an archaic pre-rational way of dealing with dangerous ideas and should be put to rest right about now. There's simply no place for this kind of stuff in the modern society.

austerity··on Canadian court ruling orders Google to block sites worldwide
This shit needs to end. Even the obvious jurisdiction overreach aside, what happened is the court ordering Google - a party not in any way involved in the conflict at hand - to withhold information from the public. The idea that this "western" form of censorship is in any way better than, say, the blocks on porn in Pakistan or political censorship in Russia is either extremely short-sighted or simply serves somebody's interests (as in case of the plaintiff lawyer here). How it is OK for anyone to have such authority is beyond me.
austerity··on Twitter Steps Down From the Free Speech Party
As long as you are not born into corporations and free to "leave" one and "join" another one they are vastly better than governments.

The problems start when governments and corporations merge.

austerity··on Show HN: Teleport – see what the web looks like from elsewhere in the world
Truth be told, I have no idea. Maybe the author of the map had an agenda :)
austerity··on Show HN: Teleport – see what the web looks like from elsewhere in the world
Unfortunately it's not as simple as that. You can instruct the browser to ignore an invalid cert for the site in address bar, but all background requests (images, scripts, ajax, etc.) to different domains made via https will still be silently blocked.
austerity··on Show HN: Teleport – see what the web looks like from elsewhere in the world
It's certainly not the intended behavior, but it's not a surprising bug either. The rewrite was surprisingly tough to make work even most of the time. But if you could share the specific site this happened on, I will likely be able to fix it.
austerity··on Show HN: Teleport – see what the web looks like from elsewhere in the world
Thanks, duly noted.
austerity··on Show HN: Teleport – see what the web looks like from elsewhere in the world
Yup, on it, thanks for the heads up.
austerity··on Show HN: Teleport – see what the web looks like from elsewhere in the world
The servers used in this case are definitely in the Netherlands. However what seems to be happening is they are used a lot by people from Turkey (they are shared with another popular web proxy) and Google learned this somehow from some implicit signals.
austerity··on Show HN: Teleport – see what the web looks like from elsewhere in the world
Got it, will fix.
austerity··on Show HN: Teleport – see what the web looks like from elsewhere in the world
No, those ads are mine. Although they were supposed to be disabled.
austerity··on Show HN: Teleport – see what the web looks like from elsewhere in the world
More like trusted by Teleport. Whether you trust Teleport is up to you. While I promise I won't steal your passwords it's really the best I (or anyone serving as a proxy) can do. If you want a "trustless" channel, the only options are SSL over VPN or SSL over Tor, but you still have trust the CA and browser vendor.
austerity··on Show HN: Teleport – see what the web looks like from elsewhere in the world
Yes, this is openly addressed in "How it works".
austerity··on Show HN: Teleport – see what the web looks like from elsewhere in the world
Which country were you trying?
austerity··on Show HN: Teleport – see what the web looks like from elsewhere in the world
Ooops, the map had a messed up ISO code. Fixed.
austerity··on Show HN: Teleport – see what the web looks like from elsewhere in the world
Yeah, I should make China the default in my testing I think - it's certainly the most interesting.
