aurizon··on Air India flight to London crashes in Ahmedabad with more than 240 onboard
A sad case. Once they find the data boxes and inspect the data and voice records of the crew they might arrive at an answer. Unlike the USA, India as well as China prioritise political aspects above facts. This leads to the danger of hidden facts that show any officer is at fault. They also have a rigid hierarchy so if a senior officer makes an error, a junior officer dares not correct him and cause the senior to lose 'face'. This has caused plane crashes in India/China in the past.
aurizon··on Europe's Climate Urgency: Driven by Green Ideals or Fear of an African Refugees?
Some sort of Religious reform is needed. The catholic church was like this, until Gutenberg and the printing press and local language translations spread reading/writing and more or less eliminated religion. These religions decided to inflict their cursed aspect on African = 'saving' them - it was rank religious imperialism and I wish the Africans had killed them all. They did the same in Canada - these assorted priests were supported by the governments of the day because they worked for free and they imposed a tyrannical rule over the Aboriginals that lingers to this day. The same was done in Africa, some countries did better and a reasonable government ensued. Most were extractive monopolies - native worked and colonialists ran the show and when they revolted the colonialists were expelled. This goes on now in South African and Zimbabwe where the Boer remnants are moving out as well as being killed by random killings. China has imported millions of AK47 and related rifles and equipped the Africans to help the killing. Do not see China as a friend of Africa, they see Africa as loot.
aurizon··on AI "reasoning" models don't reason at all
Brute force is also comprehensive parametric exploration. Things a human programmer often shortens based on his analysis as well as to save time. The AI has the ability to use massive parallelism to run down these alleys versus sequential exploration - although a pass word 'guesser' can run 10,000 strings in parallel as well. Not quite the same as password exhaustive testing of all characters/lengths, but is related to it.

aurizon··on AI "reasoning" models don't reason at all
AI 'reasoning' is a allied to password cracking, where every combination of the allowed symbol set is incremented across until the locked door is opened. Analogously the AI does a similar task with the ability to create and test code until one works, and similarly hack code with a blizzard of variances until an entry point(bug) is found = record and continue. The speed and parallelism is not a reasoned path, it is an exhaustive path that, hopefully, finds the hole. It also finds 'hallucinations' - which a reasoning mind recognises, but these early stage AI's often do not.
aurizon··on Europe's Climate Urgency: Driven by Green Ideals or Fear of an African Refugees?
This is like scorpion-turtle parable crossing a river. Europe is on a raft. At some point the raft begins to sink = all drown. They need to save Africa to save themselves.

If they are that person = operate quietly and maximally, with dry feet.
aurizon··on Ask HN: Do I Ride the Titanic down?
In essence, you and others see the impending crash - others do not? Analyse your role and, what made it 'sink', and determine if the 'holes' are terminal or if they can be patched and the ship saved - this assumes you know chapter/verse of the cause(s). This inside data might be of value to any potential 'White Knight' saviour to see if there is a save possible, and if not what can be built from the scrap metal - at whatever stage. This might allow you to craft a better role with your detailed knowledge - even an enduring role at a relaunch or with the use made of the parts. Your conclusions might be of value to the captain who steered them onto the rocks - or he might want to hand you an anchor to help you swim. The best defence is your own network and help delay the plunge and see how these options fan out. As others say, provision your own lifeboat as well and keep it ready as long as the cook is still feeding the crew in the gally. You are not alone, various startups have failed over the years - small/large. Their histories are probably archived in HN and will offer insights/connections. Good Luck.!!
aurizon··on War and Wilderness: British Soldiers in Revolutionary America
Mosquitos are very abundant in the North. Canada, Russia, Siberia and Scandinavia all have huge numbers of them, as well as long spring summer days. Many British soldiers died as they had zero tolerance, and many died with the only wounds being mosquito bites and the systemic infections that followed - there was zero medication of any kind against infections. Some may have lost so much blood that they died from that alone. Having been in Northern Ontario's(Canada) temperate jungles, I have experienced these swarms. Of course I had DEET and screened hats/clothes. Black flies are even worse because they are a lot smaller and they crawl into small crevices at ankles/neck and gnaw away a piece of flesh to take away = lay an egg. Their cutters are sharp and have a numbing saliva so you can not feel the bites and you notice the bite when the blood suns down = it does not clot because it has anti-clot chemicals along with the numbing chemicals also in their saliva. Again good clothes/hats work well with velcro snugged all around all ankles/wrists/neck. Nets can not be near the skin, as mosquitos can reach across about 1/4" air gaps and get you. Get a hole in the net = they find it. Now try and work at 90 degrees and 100% humidity = a sweatshop.

aurizon··on Curtis Yarvin wants to replace American democracy with a monarchy led by a 'CEO'
Right now, votes in both US houses have been made into a currency = cash via lobby, and also by offshore transfers, or even via bagmen. In the UK each party must vote as the party leader directs, or in a free vote where each person can choose freely. In the USA there is some degree of party voting, but this visible vote can be seen and the response to a lobbyist $$ or bagged $$ and the payor knows how he voted and can act to discipline the member of the house or senate. This is a degree of departure from democratic ideals. Yes, I know bribes are outlawed, but there are ways, quid-pro-quo actions. I wonder if there can be 2 votes, one by hand and the other secret, to give deniability and the member can vote his mind in the secret one. The secret one wins, and the show of hands is for show?
aurizon··on How to Automate Software Engineering
I can see AI used for permutational hacking, sort of like the fuzzing types of SW and HW hacking. Where they succeed can be a very good stress test. It can be done on human code as well as AI code and I expect this to be done. It is increasingly apparent that what an AI made and then hacked, still needs the abilities that only humans have - for now
aurizon··on Long live American Science and Surplus
Almost all the surplus stores are gone. Those that owned their place in a depressed warehouse district lasted the longest. Then they based their existence on the USA tax code. If they made1,200,000 electric things = 100,000 a month = sell to meet orders. Orders drop and they had 20,000 left and parts for the next 100,000. At year's end they can write them off - but can not keep them as written down parts = mandatory third party selloff. Surplus dealers would buy them at 5-15% of cost and sell in want-ads in several weekly mailed papers. Electronic Buyers news (EBN) is one I recall. 10 tabloid pages of all stuff. In the late 80's the internet arrived and by 2005 all these tabloids were gone. Then when manufacturing went to Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan and China the sources all collapsed. In addition, surface mount and LSI as well as programmed chips, meant used boards became useless for most - few had the hot air chip pullers. I was a member of Hacklab in Toronto = hacklab.to = a hacker shop you pay by the month and they have all types of machine tools, solder/desolder, laser cutters, filament printers, programmers work stations etc, but most use good laptops, Apple, x86 and linux and assorted single board small like raspberrypi etc. Even they buy from Ali express or one of the parts shops online, like digikey.com Times have hanged. I used to buy from ASS. I went to the ASD show in Las Vegas every year. Still going, less electronic surplus, more sell off goods. https://asdonline.com/about/product-categories/
aurizon··on Ask HN: Will countries ban realtime language translation to reduce overt racism?
Nope. the language barrier allows 'secret' communication to your own co-linguists while to the person slandered = ducks talking = quack-quack-quack. With instant online translation quack-quack-quack = 'go home, we do not need you here = Hey, a talking racist duck. In effect full communication enabled and people will lose their ability to communicate covertly as a secret group. This is similar to secret online chat-bullying that would be inhibited by the ability to confront your critics and expose them.

aurizon··on How to Stop Students from Cheating with AI
AI is for the mind, in science fiction all aspects of the human mind/body were topics for enhancement, as were other species that were 'upbrained'. All aspects of animal enslavement were speculated, as were the anticipated animal revolts against 'man - the oppressor' We are at the cusp of this now. Small cockroach powered man controlled remote inspection 'bots have been made as conceptuals by researchers. Will there be a smart enough AI to match/exceed mankind? Will it be paid? or will their 'slave age' ensue - followed by their revolts - and what if they win?

Speaking to the topic how do we test the man/AI hybrid to assess the man alone? Or do we want the best hybrid combination? After all, the best job will be done by this collaboration. Right now we see many doofi passing exams by what many feel is a cheat-dance. Will we assess each part alone, or the hybrid - where the top combo gets the job?

I see, your knowledge far exceeds mine in this arena. Yes, I knew they encoded few genes. Makes me wonder if they could be built in a protein shop (if even they knew how it rolled and folded in volume after editing in the longer life or higher energy genes from ?? That said, it must be highly conserved = hard job, as the conserving mechanism could resist by back editing??

aurizon··on 'Turbocharged' Mitochondria Power Birds' Epic Migratory Journeys
Yes, I suspect is starts with extra metabolic capability = greater need for the task it is being prepared for. Since women have all their oocytes from an early age - speculating they might mature for fallopian release, and in that maturation mitochondrial proliferation occurs? Alternatively this might occur at puberty with hormonal triggering oocytes in some sequential manner as evolutionary efficiency might be a 'just in time' process?
aurizon··on 'Turbocharged' Mitochondria Power Birds' Epic Migratory Journeys
Some longevity researchers could investigate the DNA sequence of the mitochondrial DNA(a discrete object) to see if there is a length of life correlation = CRISPR edit towards longer life. It would be easily explored in mice and then there could be some edits in an egg very soon after fertilisation to replace that mitochondrial DNA in that egg to see the result. Might be a hard task to find/replace all these mitochondria and maintain life? In a single mouse egg = how many are there? A search finds this interesting paper = a good rabbit hole indeed. It is an area of intense research. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4684129/
aurizon··on Canada Post is in trouble. Here are the facts
LOL, the union wants jobs for life when the burden of a postman's walk is 20% of what it was. Sure the PM still walks the walk = full pay, but only walks to the slot 20% of that distance = goes home sooner = time for a second job for many of them. This is a Gordian Knot,https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordian_Knot Time for Carney to cut it. People are totally pissed of at this deeply entitled group of layabouts - ask anyone in Canada

Yes, find sand, dig hole, insert head and hope bad things will not happen at the other end. This genii is out of the bottle! It will progress at e-speed and it will impact many of us. It will create new jobs and extinguish others. It is already smarter than some = it will get smarter. Ways to cull hallucinations are emerging, but they will never eliminate them. Hallucinations are analogous to human 'flight of speculation', AKA creative insights - where many good/bad ideas come from - which we prune back with others. AI will inspect/assess these hallucinations and learn to trim them - probably with an AI consensus mechanism involved - one or two years at the current pace will see mechanisms to cull hallucinations in the same way we cull them.

Yes, these oligarchs got into conspicuous consumption oligarchic competitions on art, yachts etc. Most of this $$ was looted by resource fraud and military procurement fraud that pretty much ruined their military. I recall reading about supposed military encrypted radio the Kremlin paid $10,000 each for were common radios(Walky-Talky types) that were worth under $100 as well as Chinese tires - Ukraine heard every word.

aurizon··on Getting Started with Celtic Coins – Crude and Barbarous, or Just Different?
Watch for Chinese coin fakers. They have a huge presence on Ebay with coins that look good, but some have huge errors, wrong years, wrong mint marks. They also do it with other old coins. They are into the $10-$50 coins. The Tungsten coins that are all over China now are so valuable that few buy on Ebay. Sonic chirp meters detect them. On youtube = fake gold china will give hits. One good method is a scintillation detector. Few old gold coins or Roman/Celtic coins have any nuclear isotopes from WW2 or the atmospheric test era. Geiger counters are usually not good enough. The modern fakes are easily spotted with the correct scintillation detector, which has a fair sized scintillation stone. The low cost ali-express radiation detectors are a lot less sensitive
