aurizon··on Sci-Hub Now Blocked in India
One of the things India most needs, the more they try - the more people will find cracks. I understand there are many similar online repositories. I hail Alexandra. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexandra_Elbakyan https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sci-Hub

aurizon··on China Is Run by Engineers, and the US by Too Many Lawyers
The USA is run by too many dummies, China has a far higher number of graduates in tech, although China also has many 'purchased' degrees - the hiring of a winger to pass exams
aurizon··on Nearly 1 in 3 Starlink satellites detected within the SKA-Low frequency band
Yes, I see, dated 2018 using rarified air as ion source. Totally solves the reaction mass needs and the electricity is solar
aurizon··on Nearly 1 in 3 Starlink satellites detected within the SKA-Low frequency band
I have often wondered if a a very small Ion thruster, used intermittently, gravitationally stabilised, could be used to offset the variable atmospheric drag caused by inflation/deflation of the tenuous upper atmosphere to extend satellite life. It would add a little weight at launch but could extend orbital life by many years. It would need fractions of a gram of thrust, run off the current solar electricity budget, and could easily make them endure for 10+ years. When the satellite had failed or aged out, it could be used for improved de-orbiting at end of life. I also suspect that a mobile stream at a lower frequency could be added that would provide intermittent stream down loads of news directly to the Russian people via recently tested cell phone comms ability

aurizon··on Scientific fraud has become an 'industry,' analysis finds
Religion - cargo cult et al. It is quite clear that religions arose from tribalism to aggregate tribes into pan religious groups. They are de-facto control mechanisms = toe the line = give us your $$ = fight/kill as ordered.
aurizon··on Scientific fraud has become an 'industry,' analysis finds
The process needs 'Darwinising' = plagiarised stuff carries an academic survival burden. Set up an LLM to do a cross-associative search. Latest models should be quite capable of this = A human sieves the sand for gold and find who does not live to procreate!!
aurizon··on US reportedly forcing TSMC to buy 49% stake in Intel to secure tariff relief
Kick the Tariff dog too often and it will bite. Huge Aluminum/copper/wood tariffs have moved Canada to export diversely. These supplies are tight and this year's production has been purchased in Europe/Japan/Asia who are short. Since the USA can not plant magic 1 year wood seeds = new growth 10-20 years out. Houses use a lot of wood/copper/aluminum = a bad 2-3 years comes knocking. Plastic(PEX) can make pipes, but they are a lower quality. Bamboo grows fast and can be used for glued under pressure wood for most uses, but it is not cheap made in the USA
aurizon··on What happens when housing prices go down?
Any buffer vanishes as prices fall = buyers pull back and wait for the dust to settle = a downwards cascade that can consume all equity= underwater, and buyer does not want to bail out a sunken ship. Lenders have recourse to whatever other assets the buyer has(depends on fine print, LLC etc) and some lenders sell at auction right away, some set a reserve below which they rent the home and the banks usually have management departments to manage that, but each case differs.
aurizon··on Tandy Corporation, Part 3
Radio shack/Tandy clung to a sea of small parts as surface mount came in. Most of these parts went for scrap. As surface mount dominated the repair/salvage of most parts became uneconomic. Without the parts 'albatross' around their neck they could have given Dell or Compaq a better run for the money. Hack labs across USA/World keep small work alive with shared infrastructure, surface mount, hot plate reheaters etc, CAD design and low cost mailed board makers are very much a thing these days
aurizon··on Ask HN: How is my MacBook temp getting misread?
open up, remove heat sinked parts, clean both faces with isopropyl alcohol. Buy some 'cooler master' paste and reseat. Take care with minimal alcohol and power off - it can catch fire. Most repair shops can do this - ask first
aurizon··on AI challenge to find lost Amazonian civilizations draws critics
It seems to me that there were several bacterial/viral invasions mediated by human migration over the past -20,000 years. Each ice advance lowered the oceans and allowed populations to colonise the exposed continental shelf = migrate and fill interior niches. Ice melts and migrations are deterred. Populations endure their pathogens, and evolve their set of pathogens. This seems to have had 2-3 recurrences - the recent Spanish/UK/European colonisation killed over 90% of the indigines to the ends of the rivers. These infections were bidirectional but not symmetrical. The Americas bore the brunt of these deaths. Measles/smallpox/chicken pox/mumps being highly lethal(death rates varied but data is sparse). Europe got syphilis(disputed - but generally held). Has there been any 'archeo-bacterial-viral' work done on this? I know bones/teeth can be used as proxies for some infections?
aurizon··on Elon Musk's Grok AI chatbot is posting antisemitic comments
I see the sport of 'AI chatbot baiting' needs some work so outputs get filtered. I know GROK and the rest are prey to this baiting - as millions of similar bait-bait products have been seen = the typewriter is innocent.
aurizon··on New Evidence Adds to Findings Hinting at Network of Caves on Moon (2024)
There is evidence of lava tunnels and some show collapsed parts. The millions of years of thermal cycling with the lunar day/night might have annealed them, making them less likely to collapse and act places where long term sealed/insulated filled with low pressure pure oxygen at about 3 psi(same partial pressure of O2 as earth - less danger of any blow out. I can see the need for permanent roof/wall support as well as a sealed membrane with fiber glass for strength to make them safe for people and sheltered from some impacts

aurizon··on Nearly 20% of cancer drugs defective in four African nations
Africa and China are awash with fake meds - perhaps even in India. Large amounts of fake drugs are common in Africa/China = deaths are common. Pharmacies are very aware of this and watch their sources. The big problem is very good copies of the container, box and printed insert that mimic exactly the true drugs are everywhere. A copied box/insert/vial/tablet that costs $1 can hold drugs worth $200 or more. There are gangs that buy them from China and try to insert them in the supply chain. I was with Sanofi-Pasteur(before I retired) and we had strict QC controls on every batch(every single ingredient). Every ingredient was sampled and tested locally and a sample sent to various head offices in USA/Canada/UK/etc. Batch ingredients were kept in locked areas and only allowed out in a weighed batch amount. The whole area was a clean and watched area with limited access badges on each person working there. You could only enter your zone and use your lunch/toilet area. Some ingredients are active and can have high values. Some are inert fillers. 1 milligram of fentanyl is minuscule = it ends up in a 25 or 50 milligram pressed tablet for ease of patient/pharmacy handling. Even adding the inert is complex as the active and the inert must mix with no settling or gravity segregation. Often the active is mixed with an intermediate diluent and a fluid that will not dissolve either and mixed in wiped surface mixer to make a very uniform paste which was then dried and granulated and this was added to the final diluent and a 'binder'. The binder is a material that will glue the tablet together in a high speed press. Some tablets get an enteric coating that resists acid but dissolves in the lower gut alkaline state = breaks and dissolves. Fentanyl and other strong opioids are killers in small amounts, so extreme precautions are taken to ensure correct doses.
aurizon··on Loss of key US satellite data could send hurricane forecasting back 'decades'
Someone in the USA should litigate to forestall any irreversible shut down/sunsetting of these satellites. Under automatic systems they might last until the midterms when a 'night of the long knives' might reap a huge harvest - perhaps a dual supermajority to allow for some reforms?
aurizon··on Ask HN: How did low contrast text become so pervasive?
I think some bad web design instructions just get propagated among script kiddy web designers = fat fee for minimal work. I like black on white = I hate beige/fawn text on ochre/puce? screens. I have complained to about a dozen sites = zero response = I endure and visit less.
aurizon··on Loss for Private Equity, UnitedHealth: Oregon Bans Corporate Control of Doctors
Vets are skilled, but a 'match MD $' seems to have infested the field. The result is people are forced to let their animals die unmedicated because they lack the $$ or credit to save their pet, a very sad anguish.
aurizon··on Loss for Private Equity, UnitedHealth: Oregon Bans Corporate Control of Doctors
They should add dentists and vets to this interdiction. Huge fee increases over the past ~10 years. In the case of vets = huge increase of pet death under suffering as people can not afford the steep fees.
aurizon··on Have Appliances Declined in Durability?
Yes they have. The thickness of steel as inner/outer walls. The mass of motors and their internal copper has been cut by the use of far higher frequencies of alternating current often generated via pulse width modulation up to 50-200 Khz. The use of glues to fasten, foam to insulate and of course the planned life of 4-8 years. They are made to throw away, with no economic repair path as the labor cost plus parts often exceeds a new machine - it can take 3-4 hours of service labor to answer a call, arrange to view, use the embedded diagnostics to ID the fault and look up the parts cost = quote the client with the trip to inspect cost, plus the inflated parts cost plus another 3-4 to go fix. All these labor hours are costed at $75-125 per hour = zero economic way to fix
aurizon··on Carbon trading has become an easy target for organized crime
Ideal scam candidate, just get an accountant to audit it and sell it. I recall the Canadian SRTC frauds of the 90's, get an audit and sell it to an oil company paying 55% taxes, the usual rate was 28% of face, and the tax men were stopped by the audit and could not reverse the deduction so they had to chase the SRTC origonator - he also had an accountant. Billions were save/made - it was the wild west of SRTC fraud. SRTC = Scientific Research Tax Credits = they could be sold to heavily taxed oil companies by research companies that made no profits in Canada
aurizon··on DARPA program sets distance record for power beaming
Those sat to ground power sources use gallium arsenide switched FETs = synchronous rectification, avoiding the voltage drop of diodes has been tested on a small scale, the 10GW orbital 35% efficient solar arrays, maybe next week... Solar boilers, end to end, are more efficient than solar cells, but mechanical complexity(leaks, corrosion, worker avarice) made one US plan in the South West non viable. As we sit silicon-perovskite tandem solar cells will top out around 42-45% - unless Schockley is end runned? Ternary -??. A good lecture = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ft0VJX0_Td0&t=2s&ab_channel=...
aurizon··on Despite arrests, online monkey torture rings keep on torturing
It is very sad to see monkeys(as well as any other animal) tortured for gratuitous pleasure. I wonder if those that enjoy this are people constrained from doing the same actions to people by moral restraints or the restraints of peers/adults/teachers/religious mores? The classical inhibitions are subject to 'end runs' by the internet whereby individuals who enjoy this are connected to people who perform these acts - all on an ecology of remote payment/performance/enjoyment? It is akin to facebook bullying - which occurs between known groups (highschool mates etc) as well as total anonymous strangers on the old text BBS as well as anything in between. Having been on 110 baud chats in the 80's up to the present, where anonymity was common. I note that is the first BBS's, that were tied to student/faculty arrangements where there was zero anonymity = rara avis! So this is a form of vandalism that vanishes when accountability is present. This has been seen, as well, with private FB groups where members are classmates and all are known and there are observers. Masked public protest - is that allowed? I once saw such a protest where masked people were present at a hate rally. Police arrested some of the masked ones to identify them, https://torontosun.com/news/local-news/warmington-cops-alleg... So the masked in public as well as masked(by handles) fear their actions might be associated with their person. Sorry if this = long rant, but it seems that accountability does act to reduce these actions
aurizon··on I convinced HP's board to buy Palm and watched them kill it
HP specialised in snatching Defeat from the very jaws of Victory, always after the elusive $cow and all they get is hate. They have made some tries at additive printing = high end $$. They have had some success in that far from consumer field - but it does not impinge on me.
