attack··on Ask HN: What's stopping HN going the way of Reddit/Digg/Slashdot?
Yes, the majority of people here just support banning, harsher punishments, and locking out all outsiders. Those are very poor solutions!

#1 and #2 cause strong negative backlash. As you would learn from marketing theory, a user that you have personally screwed with will likely cause 20x more damage to your brand than your best users improve it. #3 Locks out a lot of useful expertise. For sure, HN could use a lot more knowledge about programming. So far, this site has attracted lots of people who want to learn but much less so people who already know a lot and have wide experience. We still very much need to be inviting to the latter.

Another point that very knowledgeable people are very opinionated, stubborn, and generally assholes. Linus Torvalds is the stereotypical example. This is not to excusing the behavior, but the correlation exists and we will all have to try not to get so offended and ban people like immature children.

If you try to hold onto the past forever instead of trying to improve then you will fail.

I hope this was useful.

attack··on RFR: Does blockquoting lead to nastier discussions?
I believe this is called "Fisking".
attack··on Stop Using FTP
Just to add, here's what wikipedia says about the term:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SFTP

attack··on Stop Using FTP
Filezilla on windows assumes sftp to be SSH transfers. So I think you've got that backwards.
attack··on Gmail to No Longer Auto Add Contacts
Their chat system is by far the most retarded. If you have multiple aliases tied into one gmail account then gmail chat will readily leak out all of your identities to everyone.
attack··on Python best practices
And look how complicated they make it. Sometimes spaces, sometimes not, how confusing. And tell me that their "Use spaces around arithmetic operators" example doesn't make you want to puke:

          i = i + 1
          submitted += 1
          x = x * 2 - 1
          hypot2 = x * x + y * y
          c = (a + b) * (a - b)
Who writes like that?? I very strongly disagree.
attack··on [dead]
It's not down for everyone, but very down for me.
attack··on Python best practices
My comments:

> x=5 || x = 5

Noooo. That first one is backwards. Extraneous spaces annoy me to no end. Makes it a pain to search for things too.

On the other hand, using newlines to break things up at commas for example, is great. But that's not applicable here.

> class fooclass: ... || class Fooclass(object): ...

Is this a joke?

> d = dict() || frequences = {}

How can you say that longer names are always better? (Is that part of the message here?) Usually most variables are throw-away so using short names should be the most common case. Similar to mathematics.

> # Use iter* methods when possible

This should mention that thread-safety is probably the most directly relevant use case for the non-iterable methods.

> # coding: latin

Better to use this:

     #!/usr/bin/env python
     # -*- coding: UTF-8 -*-
attack··on SSL encryption coming to The Pirate Bay
Perhaps to somewhat protect the people who upload torrents to the site? I'm sure a lot of incriminating evidence could be gathered by observing all the uploading/commenting/posting that someone does on tpb.

Of course, everyone knows that the whole SSL setup is quite vulnerable to MIM.

attack··on Ask HN: What should I try to do while still in college?
I thought the same for the first two years of college. Beware!
attack··on What’s New in Python 3.0
Java, especially if you get into the OOP patterns fun, can present a million ways of doing things. Java is terrible about this.
attack··on Next Gen Code Editor prototype
Which do humans use more for communication and reasoning - words or visuals? Considering that we have developed elaborate languages but done relatively little in the way of visual non-word communication, I would deduce that words and symbols are generally a superior medium. The graphs just seemed a bit cluttered towards the end I think. Interesting though.

I do still have a fondness of flow-based programming, as is used in Kamaelia, twisted flow, or graphical VHDL environments though.

Don't be a jerk. Quote exactly where this guy went wrong if you want to help.
attack··on Ask HN: Do you swear in your code?
Better code than you will ever write was written by people who swear a ton. Strange how that is.

Yeah, either way, that sucks.

Cellphone companies are the ultimate evil.

attack··on 40GB for $55 per month: Time Warner bandwidth caps arrive
Dialup isn't 56KB? Ah, my lying network monitor.
attack··on 40GB for $55 per month: Time Warner bandwidth caps arrive
40GB/month = 15KB/s. Put that all together and you'll see his error.
attack··on 40GB for $55 per month: Time Warner bandwidth caps arrive
No no. Dialup was 56KB/s not 56kb/s.
attack··on Ask YC: Why the degree?
That's the supporting theory. The problem is that this eliminates both the majority of the unqualified applicants and a large number of the very top applicants. Suitable for a big company? Sure. For a startup or more ambitious company? Unlikely.
attack··on Ask YC: Why the degree?
Do you think you were doing it the best way possible?
attack··on Ask YC: Why the degree?
The original poster was asking why startups use this practice. Startups should not be looking for normal people at all.
attack··on IPhone at $200
Yes, this is probably meant to be a better fit for the spending structures of corporate customers.

AKA, the world's highest interest loan.

attack··on Ask YC: How do you upload to your web server?
You should really use ssh with that. Not much more complex:

rsync -azP local_dir -e ssh user@host.com:remote_dir
