attack··on People buy the $999 iPhone app
Talk in proverbs much?
attack··on People buy the $999 iPhone app
No they don't. Ebay doesn't have one-click ordering that I'm aware of.
attack··on People buy the $999 iPhone app
You are wrong. This may be the case if it is directly from a bank account, but not from a credit card.

Regardless, the way that the Apple store tricked his muscle memory by not having a confirmation page borders on fraudulent. If they would not reverse this honest mistake when you present the situation to them, then I would have no problem perusing this by other means.

attack··on Ask HN: What has been your biggest mistake?
Yes, football from what I've seen, is far worse than any other common sport. Even rugby is much safer.
attack··on [dead]
undead,

I think you should better blog about the reason of success of those start up, that would be better !

attack··on The Myth of Moderate Exercise
Answer:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/05/health/research/05fat.html...

> Losing or gaining weight affects only the amount of fat stored in the cells, not the number of cells.

BUT

> Every year [..] 10 percent of your fat cells die [...] and are replaced with new fat cells.

So, fat people aren't at a disadvantage by having far more cells.

attack··on The Myth of Moderate Exercise
He's probably thinking of human muscle cells.
attack··on When the 'Wisdom of Crowds' turns on itself: IMDB Edition
The point of top-k rankings is to put items in the proper order. As far as the crowds are concerned, this is no failure. Sorry your favorite movie lost its spot.
attack··on Ex-Google engineers debut 'Cuil' way to search
Looks good, and has a nice feel.

But not so good here,

attack··on Google says there are now 10^12 unique URLs. I am proud to announce the 2nd trillion.
They actually did explicitly say that this measurement ignores URL's which are non-unique enough or of insignificant worth as best that they could determine. But ah well, I guess it's just for fun.
attack··on Is it worth starting "from scratch" in web dev? Straight Python, or Django?
undead,

You shouldn't try to learn a language with an application framework. I also recommend you don't try to learn Python with a web app. The web is a crazy hodge-podge of standards and a web-app is complicated by how many different problem domains it has to contend with. Write some programs to organize your mp3 collection or filter your email or something.

Also, keep in mind that if you haven't done a lot of programming it will take quite a lot of experience before you're writing apps that are maintainable and reliable.

attack··on Why S3 went down
Memory corruption.
attack··on New Facebook Layout Is Smart
I disabled my account years ago and then my school disabled my email so I can't re-enable it. Just as well though, I don't really want to go back. It's kind of like how when you start programming video games you don't play them as much anymore.
attack··on "Most creative people are not working in a university doing research anymore."
Their research was rather thrilling at the time.
attack··on New Facebook Layout Is Smart
Screenshots, anyone?
attack··on Ask HN: Way to map one database schema to another?
Interesting idea. I always just wrote a python script to do the translating and transfer.
attack··on The Coffee Junkie's Guide to Caffeine Addiction
Switched to caffeine pills here.

1. Easier to keep intake from growing out of control.

2. Easier to keep caffeine levels steady since the pills take less time and effort than making more coffee and the dosage is very consistent. No unexpected crashes.

3. Teeth/mouth.

attack··on Why are modern sneakers so ugly?
> I’d prefer the minimalist look of a pair of Stan Smiths

Those are very ugly shoes.

attack··on How the Man finally brought e-gold down
Egold was NOT about the gold standard, although the article makes it out to be. It may have shifted towards that in the very end due to the tightening regulations that forced them to abandon their initial purposes, but gold really had little to do with it. Get it straight.

These regulations are what make online payments that are as easy as cash legally impossible. It's a serious detriment to startups.

attack··on Y Combinator Pushes The Envelope
The success of their marketing or of actually getting people hooked up? If they were so successful then they'd lose all of their customers because they would no longer need the site...

> I’m not saying its ever going to be 100% accurate but if we can determine that x guy and y girl live happily ever after 85% of the time if they share z traits that still gives us the ability to match people far more successfully than we do now.

Go ahead and even begin to try to find data to back up that big assumption. No metric with such high correlation exists. This is my point.

attack··on Rate/Review my startup - streamfile
It streams it? That's very useful.
attack··on Y Combinator Pushes The Envelope
I suppose it depends on the ever changing reputations of the individual sites.
attack··on Rate/Review my startup - mixturtle
JS support is required for the flash auto-play on IE due to some rediculous patent dispute.
attack··on Y Combinator Pushes The Envelope
The idea that each person has a unique set of traits that will only allow "deep compatibility" with another person who has another unique set of traits is a theory that seems to be only believed by people who don't have a lot of experience with relationships (no offense!).

Maybe the details of the implementation could change my mind, but in the end this would probably be useful for little other than a marketing gimmick.

Is now really the best time for the online dating world? The best times seemed to be shortly after the big sites we have now had just came into existence. Now there social stigma of actually using them as such has become overpowering. Bars though, don't really have this problem.

attack··on Startup Ideas We'd Like to Fund
This should give everyone a boost in coming up with good products. Thanks guys.
attack··on From a list of possible projects, how do you choose?
Marketability.

Choose the one for which you either: know particular people that will be very interested in it and will definitely use it, or have a very good strategy for getting lots of people to use it.

attack··on GoDaddy’s Domain Registration Totally Screws .me
I'll bet you my foot that it wasn't someone who used godaddy...
attack··on GoDaddy’s Domain Registration Totally Screws .me
Me too, permanently.

What techcrunch doesn't make clear is that this wasn't just some inter-registrar communication problem. Godaddy itself was selling the same domain names over and over and over for hours!

attack··on Ask HN: What's stopping HN going the way of Reddit/Digg/Slashdot?
Those techniques work to protect against bots and similar, but do little to help in the case of a real person.
attack··on Ask HN: What's stopping HN going the way of Reddit/Digg/Slashdot?
If that could be achieved then, yes you would be quite correct. However, it is very hard to completely cut people off on the Internet. Furthermore, they can start disparaging you through other mediums (eg blogs) and influence people they still know to be using your site.
