atom_arranger··on I’m porting the TypeScript type checker tsc to Go
62X is still one order of magnitude.

I would bet on a port eventually being done and hitting at least 10X.

atom_arranger··on New Covid variant BA.2 detected in at least 40 different countries
We're talking about treating a specific illness. If it's such a problem we could train people to just treat covid, maybe a month or two long course, then pay them good money. If there's really a supply problem that should solve it.
atom_arranger··on Myths about cooking steak that need to go away (2013)
I like blue rare, seared and seasoned outside with a gradient to a blue rare center.

The article talks a lot about cooking steaks evenly (they use the word 7 times), which is not what I'm interested in.

atom_arranger··on An Entire Country Switched to Bitcoin and Now Its Economy Is Floundering
If they managed to pay their debts by printing money, and it causes the wealth of all individuals to decrease by 25% due to inflation, that’s sort of the same result as if they’d been able to collect the taxes instead.

Printing money/inflation is a tax.

atom_arranger··on Sources: OpenSea Eyes $13B Valuation
I mean in many countries torrent search/website operators were prosecuted despite only hosting links/metadata. e.g. People involved with The Pirate Bay.

I feel bad about DMCA being used at all.

I don’t want anyone prosecuted for sharing information. I’m just mentioning that the “it’s just links” defense might not hold up, based on prior events.

atom_arranger··on Sources: OpenSea Eyes $13B Valuation
Torrent websites tried to use the same defense and it didn’t work, unfortunately IMO.

Personally I think information should be free.

atom_arranger··on The argument against clearing the database between tests (2020)
If you want to test that “it adds X entries” then write the test to add X entries from a clean state, then add another X entries and check it is done correctly. You don’t need to rely on a dirty start state to do that.
atom_arranger··on Indiana life insurance CEO says deaths are up 40% among people ages 18-64
Regardless of what measure you’re using it would also be good to make it per person.
atom_arranger··on Show HN: Describe SQL using natural language, and execute against real data
Any company that has a lot of data in an SQL system that they want to make sense of. The idea would be that business intelligence people, analysts, the CEO, anyone who needed answers could ask a question in plain english and hopefully get a response.

The success rate was just not good enough, even for relatively simple queries. You'd probably need to adjust the query 90% of the time, and the other 10% you couldn't even really trust that the answer was correct.

atom_arranger··on Apple’s use of Swift and SwiftUI in iOS 15
It's odd because when iOS development was new the docs and HIG were very comprehensive. Almost every answer regarding iOS on places like StackOverflow would be "here's a link to that part of the docs". They also had a lot of good examples.
atom_arranger··on Someone attached an AirTag to my car while I was in a bar
If it becomes widely known that you won't be believed if you destroy all the evidence of something maybe people will do otherwise in the future.
atom_arranger··on Someone attached an AirTag to my car while I was in a bar
Thought the same but didn't want to say so on Twitter.

The AirTag would have been linked to an Apple account.

Friend didn't take any photos, destroyed the only evidence. No police report. Seems legit.

atom_arranger··on UberEats took unauthorized amount (and not willing to pay it back)
I had them not deliver an order once. They kept telling me it looked like it was delivered on their end, and they refused to do anything about it. I regret not doing a chargeback.
atom_arranger··on Show HN: Describe SQL using natural language, and execute against real data
There are projects out there that do this.

Possibly relevant: https://yale-lily.github.io/spider

I briefly worked on a startup to commercialize this tech, but we decided it wasn't accurate enough to be useful. It was very cool when it actually worked. If you can only produce what you want half the time on simple queries, that doesn't seem very useful to me though.

atom_arranger··on Ghost riders: the invisible lives of Johannesburg food couriers
> So when it comes to low-skilled jobs, in my experience immigrants are less likely to be apathetic towards their work. This results in the indigenous people feeling that foreigners are stealing their jobs, when the truth is that they're losing their jobs to people who actually make a proper effort.

Another perspective is that the jobs are not good, or don’t pay enough. If the indigenous people are not doing them you can think of it like a decentralized strike, and immigrants are the scabs. If not for the immigrants doing the work the conditions or payment for that work might improve.

This doesn’t justify violence but I don’t think it would be wrong to be upset about the situation.

atom_arranger··on In 2019 40% of San Francisco traffic fatalities are from left turns
There are crosswalks on street level, you have to go further and wait though.

Some of them have escalators or elevators.

atom_arranger··on Debunking Cloudflare’s recent performance tests
As a consumer it’s great that both companies are benchmarking. Even if Cloudflare’s was flawed. Maybe a case of, the best way to get the right answer is to post the wrong answer.

We’re at least moving towards objective comparisons, talking about numbers.

Cloudflare prohibiting benchmarking is not good, obviously.

atom_arranger··on In 2019 40% of San Francisco traffic fatalities are from left turns
In Bangkok the roads are very wide and busy. Every couple hundred meters they have bridges that go over them. It's an interesting solution to the problem. It's nice that you just walk up the stairs and cross, no need to worry about the traffic.

They're all over the place, most of them much more minimal, but similar to this: https://previews.123rf.com/images/ruslan_kokarev/ruslan_koka...

atom_arranger··on In 1930 the Indiana Bell building was rotated 90°
I think you’re thinking of “Dutch disease”:

“In economics, the Dutch disease is the apparent causal relationship between the increase in the economic development of a specific sector (for example natural resources) and a decline in other sectors (like the manufacturing sector or agriculture).”

atom_arranger··on Novel mind-body program outperforms other treatments for chronic back pain
All pain is psychological.

I imagine for most people with back pain there is a physical component, they didn’t have back pain as children, but if we had full control of the brain we could turn off the pain sensation if it’s not useful.

atom_arranger··on Japan to implement bank-deposit-backed digital currency in 2022
Regarding scale:

Bitcoin is a ledger of transactions, it has in the last 12 years had 690m transactions.

Facebook has 2.9B MAU. ~4X the number of transactions ever done on BTC.

Each user probably generates tens of “transactions” (changes to a DB) per month.

atom_arranger··on Ask HN: Isn't keeping up with tech for your career same as “timing the market”?
I guess the market analogy would be that you want to buy into an index. So if you’re invested in PHP but you see over 20% of jobs say React it might be time to diversify a bit into React.

This leaves out that diversifying one’s tech skills isn’t as easy as diversifying a portfolio though. You could do a React side project, but it won’t be considered as highly as a full time job. I guess that’s the difference between adding a bit to your portfolio vs. going all in.

atom_arranger··on NFT's aren't the answer to the problems of digital art
Is anything really solved?
atom_arranger··on NFT's aren't the answer to the problems of digital art
Kind of. It would be desirable to put your work on the blockchain before anyone else.

There are other things people could consider though, in terms of evaluating the history/authorship of something. The blockchain is just one data point.

atom_arranger··on NFT's aren't the answer to the problems of digital art
When you take someone to court over a copyright violation having proof that you control a wallet that was the first to have minted an NFT representing the work in question would be one piece of evidence that you may be the original author.

If there is other evidence, e.g. the other party has a YouTube account which uploaded a video years ago of the work, and is publicly known to be the author of the work, then the judge will probably rule the NFT is not sufficient evidence of ownership/you are not the copyright holder.

There is nothing technically stopping people uploading NFTs of things that they don’t own the rights too. That won’t hold up in court though, not even the court of public opinion.

atom_arranger··on NFT's aren't the answer to the problems of digital art
There would be a record showing the original author put it on the blockchain first. After that’s on there nobody else can remove it.

This could be used as evidence of their authorship in court.

“Look, here we have a tamper proof ledger showing I uploaded this at X date before it was copied.”

atom_arranger··on NFT's aren't the answer to the problems of digital art
Platform fee of 2.5% doesn’t seem that different from the fees the payment processors you listed charge.
atom_arranger··on The internet needs better rules, not stricter referees
Agree. Always felt the best content comes from people who aren't interested in profiting off it, aside from reputationally.

Blogspam authors: If you block ads we won't be able to afford to make content.

Me: Good, I'd rather your "content" not exist.

atom_arranger··on Skimpflation: A reason inflation is worse than the government says it is
I've always felt cynical about the "save water" flyers all over hotels.

If they really want me to choose to save water they should offer a discount if I decline the service.
