athms··on Google staff rally behind fired AI researcher
>you can keep them from filing unemployment

You cannot file for unemployment aid if you resign or are terminated for cause. You can only get assistance if your termination is the result of your position being eliminated, otherwise known as a reduction in force. This is valid in California and I believe true in every other state in the US.

>It’s good that they hire from the Humanities...

Gebru has a BS and MS in electrical engineering, and a PhD in computer science, specializing in artificial intelligence; all from Stanford. After receiving her MS, she worked at Apple's hardware engineering group. After her PhD, she worked Microsoft's AI research lab.

>Arguably firefox won't let you opt-out of automatic updates

Yes it will, but you need to create a policy and be using version 60 which includes the Enterprise Policy Engine.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/products/firefox-enterpris...

The Enterprise Policy Generator add-on will help create the policy file.

On MacOS, developer certificate requests are NOT done for every application launch. Responses are cached for a period of time before a new check is done.

FYI -- Both Firefox and Safari use OCSP to check server certificates. Anybody sniffing your network could figure out which websites you visit. Chrome still uses CRL; it trades precision for performance.

>The requests contain only app hashes.

No, application hashes are never sent. People are confusing OCSP and notarization. The requests sent via OCSP check the developer certificate. Notarization checks are done over HTTPS.

>I'm fascinated in this affaire how technically knowledgeable people loose common sense to defend their favorite brand...when it happens in plain text

I'm fascinated how technically knowledgeable people don't understand OCSP.

Checking the revocation status of certificates is why OCSP was created. It happens via HTTP. Why? Because you cannot check a certificate used for the HTTPS connection when you are using HTTPS for the connection. Apple leveraged OCSP for Gatekeeper since it does the same thing, checking certificates, in this case a developer certificate. That is all it does.

athms··on macOS has checked app signatures online for over 2 years
HTTP is specified in the RFC. Only the developer certificate is checked. OCSP is also used by web browsers to check the revocation status of certificates used for HTTPS connections. Apple leveraged OCSP for its Gatekeeper functionality. This is not the same thing as notarization, which is checked over HTTPS.

Perhaps you should learn about OCSP before complaining about its use of HTTP.

athms··on The Best of NeXT Collection
This story is fiction, Linux didn't exist in NeXT's early days. Jobs did offer Torvalds a job at Apple in 2000 to work on OS X. Torvalds turned it down because he despised Mach and refused to stop Linux development, which was a condition attached to the offer.

athms··on There's Still No Viable Open Source Business Model [video]
In the United States, authors cannot put their creative works into the public domain. There is noting in the statute or case law that allows this. Furthermore, authors (except work-for-hires) and their heirs, have the right to terminate copyright transfers and licenses after 35 years.
athms··on There's Still No Viable Open Source Business Model [video]
How is it an open source business model?

It is a closed source business model that decides to open source legacy product. It worked so well that the open sourcing stopped when Id was acquired by ZeniMax.

athms··on Dark Reader – enable Dark Mode on Wikipedia and many other websites
Human eyes don't have good night vision, we see best in daylight.

Light text on a dark background makes the eye work harder and open wider, since it needs to absorb more light. When this happens, the light letters can bleed into the dark background and cause halation. Our eyes focus better when the iris is narrow.

Additionally, most people are born with some form of astigmatism, a misshaped cornea that blurs vision. For people that have the worst forms of astigmatism, light text on dark backgrounds aggravates the condition. When looking at a light display, the iris closes more, decreasing the effect of the deformed cornea. When using a dark display the iris opens to receive more light and the deformation of the cornea makes halation worse.

On the flip side, dark mode helps with floaters, tiny fibers or spots that appear in a person's vision. These are caused by changes to the fluid in the eye which cause shadows to be cast on the retina. Floaters distort vision in light mode. This condition tends to increase with age.

Also, people with light sensitivity might be better served by a dark background.

Both light and dark mode should be offered for accessibility reasons.

I have found that dark mode works best in low light, 100% contrast (both light and dark) can be harder to read with more eye strain, and reading large amounts of text in dark mode is harder.

I have several eye conditions, some genetic and some age related, which makes dark mode unusable. I tried using Dark Reader for evening web viewing, but the blurred vision and eye strain was too much. Flux has been a better experience for me.

Sealand is within the territorial waters of the UK. No sovereign nation has recognized Sealand's independence from the UK. Even if one did, according to international law, artificial islands and structures don't possess the status of islands.

athms··on Apple outages affecting Mac apps, Big Sur updates, iMessage, and more
You need to be mindful of the quality with both brands.

Dell XPS models are notorious for coil wine and display issues. Unlike the X1, the XPS models don't have USB-A ports.

The Lenovo X1 has the display panel lottery and fit-and-finish problems such as misaligned keys, seam gaps, and case material differences, which is probably attributed to multiple suppliers. Depending on the type of display panel, there could be four different suppliers (best to worst): Innolux, LG-Philips, AU Optronics, and BOE.

athms··on Music-Related Copyright Claims and Twitch
My comment on a similar post. Best advice given by Twitch, don't stream music.

athms··on The Music Industry vs. Twitch: Licensing Tensions Heat Up as Clips Come Down
It is important to know that many composers of music (film, television, and video games) don't do work-for-hire arrangements, they license their work to the producer, developer, or publisher. That license does NOT extended to the end user.

A stream playing existing music, including video game music, will need the following licenses: master, mechanical, synchronization, and public performance. On rare occasions a print license will be needed. There is no obligation for copyright owners to grant a master, synchronization, or print license and the rate isn't fixed, it is negotiated for each use as are terms and conditions.

Twitch has stated they have public performance licenses for content. In the United Sates, these licenses are obtained from ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC.

The master license is for an existing audio recording that someone else made, including samples.

The mechanical license is for audio distribution, whether it be physical or digital. Fees are $0.091 for songs five minutes or less and $0.0175 per minute or fraction thereof for songs over five minutes. This rate is set by the Copyright Royalty Board, part of the Library of Congress, for United States territories only.

The synchronization license is for video distribution.

The print license is for printing song lyrics or musical notes.

athms··on Apple unveils M1, its first system-on-a-chip for portable Mac computers
They already disappeared, I switched to Windows in 2019.

I use MacStadium for compiling and testing iOS apps. I was wondering if the ARM machines would be worth a look, but they are disappointing. If I was still using Macs as my daily driver, I would buy the new MBA for a personal machine.

athms··on Apple unveils M1, its first system-on-a-chip for portable Mac computers
I have a late-2013 13" MBP with 16GB of memory. Seven years later I would expect a 13" MBP to support at least 32GB. I can get 13" Windows laptops that support 32GB of memory. The Mini is a regression, from 64GB to 16GB of memory. The only computer worth a damn is the new MBA.
athms··on RIAA Abuses DMCA to Take Down Popular Tool for Downloading Online Videos

No it doesn't. Users can modify the source and refuse to share it. Sharing only applies if one distributes the code.

athms··on Tobias Lutke still writes code for Shopify
Well, Shopify is still a crappy service. They refuse to do business with merchants engaged in legal trade if they sell items Shopify doesn't like. Knives are out, so are facial skin masks, and you better put down that tube of whitening toothpaste. Of course, if you are a whale like Target, Shopify has no problem with those prohibited items.

> The unfortunate thing is that copyright is treated as criminal rather than civil (in the US)...

Only if the infringement is for financial gain, otherwise the infringement is treated as a civil matter. Also, the government must show the act was willful. Whether the infringement is a treated as a misdemeanor or felony is dependent on certain thresholds set in the statute.
