atestu··on To Hell with Facebook (2021)
That's fair. There are a lot of big news sites that don't have RSS anymore, like axios.com
atestu··on Nonprofit markups.org is exposing the most egregious new car prices
I recently bought a used car, and while the prices are up, I didn't see any 10K markups or price gouging. It's still a much more sensible choice to buy a used car.
atestu··on Nonprofit markups.org is exposing the most egregious new car prices
I have, a used one, on Carvana.

I don't think the process of buying a new car is efficient at all. And I'm not defending the dealership system either. I'm just saying they're acting rationally, and that the markups don't shock me.

atestu··on Nonprofit markups.org is exposing the most egregious new car prices
Right. And I don't think we should fault dealers for wanting to make as much money as possible. They're a business after all.

I usually do the same when I sell stuff second-hand because my priority is getting rid of it as fast as possible, not to make the most money. Since dealers have very limited inventories these days, they should take more time to get a better price.

atestu··on Nonprofit markups.org is exposing the most egregious new car prices
Based on all other comments I have an unpopular opinion: I think this is fine. If 10 people want to buy 1 car, how do you choose which person gets it? You raise the price until there's only 1 person. How else would you do it?
atestu··on Nonprofit markups.org is exposing the most egregious new car prices
Just buy a used car?
atestu··on Show HN: Birdy – Twitter Profile A/B Testing
What a great, simple idea. Way to follow through and actually make it happen!

Random ideas:

* Pricing: you could tie pricing with the performance (pay $1 per extra followers that your best version is getting - cap at $X0).

* Marketing: use the twitter api to find accounts that need you the most. Probably businesses who tweet a lot with little engagement. You could target newly funded startups, maybe look at who's posting on product hunt etc.

atestu··on FDA suspends Juul ban as company appeals
If the effects are similar to cigarettes that's an argument to keep it legal imo... otherwise you'd have to ban cigarettes too.
atestu··on The end of the world is just beginning for shipping
The New Balance sneakers that are made in US / UK cost close to $200 https://www.newbalance.com/made-in-the-usa/

But I don't know if that makes me disagree with you or not given the price of a lot of sneakers these days...

atestu··on Ask HN: I created a news shortening algorithm and am not sure how to utilize it
I would try to optimize it for one specific use case, not have a general API that does this. I think it's much easier to sell something more niche.

Find a job that requires reading long text. Let's say something in healthcare where they need to read a lot of journal articles. Now you're not a "summarization API" you're a way to reduce your time spent reading medical journals, time that could be better spent savings lives (your new tagline: "Less reading, more saving lives" -- half kidding). You can also optimize your tool to summarize journal articles which are written in a very specific way. When you sell, you can set yourself apart by being made especially for them.

I wouldn't sell to podcasters or anyone in media because they have no money (just look at how much writers are paid, look at media company valuations...).

atestu··on The case for expanding rather than eliminating gifted education programs (2021)
The incentives are misaligned. Private prisons make more money if people go back to prison…!
atestu··on What a gas stove ban means for restaurants
Huh? Almost everyone I know in France ("Europe" is too big and varied to generalize imo) has a gas stove.
atestu··on GSuite legacy users can now get a free personal account, includes Gmail
Good things come to those who procrastinate, I guess.
atestu··on Why is every consumer startup selling me what I already own for 10x the price?
I find Hersey chocolate inedible, but I think it's one of those products you have to have grown up eating, like how some people prefer canned green beans to fresh ones.
atestu··on Snapchat’s product is booming
I'm in the same situation (minus bot since I delete the app), but I interpret it as: Snapchat is for young people and I'm not longer young. To me it means they're not growing old with their audience, they keep reaching new teenagers every year, which makes them very valuable to advertisers.
atestu··on I stopped advertising and nothing happened
Absolutely! I remember Basecamp's CEO tweeting about this https://twitter.com/jasonfried/status/1168986962704982016

In the replies Google says: "we don’t restrict trademarked terms as keywords. We do restrict trademarked terms in ad text if the trademark owner files a complaint"

It's a gamble on the strength of your brand to not buy that ad. I think it makes sense that eBay can do away with it, because people typing "eBay" in Google will scroll down for eBay, they won't click on "Company X - Best eBay alternative." Most brands aren't that strong...

atestu··on One-click checkout startup Fast is laying off its staff

atestu··on 25% of U.S. adults are not active enough to protect their health
I'm surprised it's only 25% given that 42.4% of US adults are obese (not just overweight, obese!)

atestu··on Boards are dangerous to founder/CEOs
They formerly renamed the company to Basecamp a few years ago and shut down / spun off other products (campfire and highrise).
atestu··on Show HN: I built a no-BS recipe search engine
I love the speed! I agree with other comments about the pictures. They help to skim so I think they add to information density in a way.

I would remove the author column personally, and maybe you could remove " reviews" in the reviews column (just show the number) and show the time as a number in minutes? If no time provided just show nothing.

If you add pictures you could have the option to show as a grid, similar to a file explorer. In the list view you could have a small picture with a bigger one when you hover?

atestu··on The big alcohol study that didn't happen
Yes... 1 glass of wine per meal is not crazy. Adds up to 2 drinks a day and that's not counting apéritif or any after-dinner drinks.
atestu··on NYT Confirms Israel Killed an Iranian Nuclear Scientist with a Robot Sniper
From the article:

> Fakhrizadeh was shot at least four times by the smart rifle, which was hidden in a pickup truck a short distance away.

> Israeli operatives smuggled the weapon and its parts piecemeal into Iran before reassembling it.

Apple stopped being "Apple Computers" 14 years ago. They're explicitly a mobile devices company, and fitness fits perfectly into that mission I think.
