asveikau··on As downtown Seattle offices empty, city facing years of 'zombie' towers
The neighborhoods they built that stuff in (mostly South Lake Union and Denny Triangle) used to be so sleepy in 2010 and earlier. It was a big transformation.
asveikau··on Potential session/cache leakage between workspace instances or consumer accounts
HN becoming anthropic support would certainly explain a lot of threads and comments I've seen here lately. Thank you for this.
asveikau··on The Vespa at 80
I haven't been following the latest developments but about 10 years ago they launched "Vespa elettrica". It was very expensive and low powered at launch. Not sure if they've iterated on it since.

I suspect that other brands of electric motorbike may be better

asveikau··on CarPlay Is Additive
Android Auto is also a thing.
asveikau··on FFmpeg 9.1's new AAC encoder
I know the opus codec assumes everything is 48kHz and will resample inputs to that.
asveikau··on Physical disc production ending in Jan 2028 for new games on PlayStation
Off topic, XKCD should put the original publication date on the page. This one references specific years, and I could tell it's from 2009 after thinking about it, but doesn't hit the same way.
asveikau··on Xsnow "protestware" in Debian
I was not totally clear on this. The article makes it sound like the behavior is in the debian patches, and not upstream?

I believe upstream is here, and has the same code as quoted:

    https://sourceforge.net/p/xsnow/code/HEAD/tree/trunk/xsnow/src/scenery.c#l332

  if (global.Language && !strcmp(global.Language,"ru") && drand48() < 0.3)
     tt = MAXTREETYPE;
asveikau··on Knoppix
I frequently see things on HN where people just share the website of a well known project. I assume it's for people who legit never heard of it. Maybe they're younger. I think of a saying, every year a new generation discovers the Beatles for the first time.
asveikau··on Building Principia for Windows XP
A few years ago I had a C++ project going (one man project, it had a GUI) that I was testing on WinXP. I found it was fairly easy to maintain a binary that loaded on XP using VS2015 as my compiler. I sometimes had to patch libraries to not depend on Win7 era APIs, but it was a small task.
asveikau··on Enhancing x11 Application Security with LXC (2025)
Hard for me to take that one seriously.. For example they call out byte swapping for endianness as the type of cruft holding back X11. Such a trivial thing to be concerned enough to put in the readme... (I guess Phoenix is also putting this..) Seems like mostly authored by Claude too.
asveikau··on 'Careless People' author claims Meta surveilled her for 12mos to enforce silence
It was a sarcastic comment. I read the book last year and I believe almost every word.
asveikau··on 'Careless People' author claims Meta surveilled her for 12mos to enforce silence
Seems like exactly what they'd do if the claims weren't true, am I right?
asveikau··on We can still stop California's 3D printer surveillance scheme
He is currently in a congressional race. 1 month ago I voted against him, for Saikat Chakrabarti. In November he will face Connie Chan.

It's possible that Chan would also support this. She is not in a position to do so now, because she is not voting on state law.

There seems to be a propaganda thread in the culture now to get people cynical and thinking everything is rigged against you in advance, and a prerequisite to accepting this is to ignore how to the system actually works. The end result is to prevent you from getting involved. You never know if you don't try.

As an example (maybe some of the HN audience will dislike the outcome here but the point stands nonetheless), this week two sitting members of Congress were knocked out in New York, and their party told them the previous year to not bother trying.

By the way I also know for a fact that Scott Wiener's staff reads San Francisco's subreddit. Commenting about Wiener's vote in there will reach his staff. Given the bay area presence here it's also possible somebody "who knows a guy" will even see this thread name-drop him.

My letter opened with the fact that I generally favor reasonable gun laws, then elaborated how this is not that.

It's possible that nobody reads it and captures the nuance, but I did spend time to consider the framing. Nobody who actually reads it will think I am an extremist or that I haven't carefully considered the topic.

From what I know about legislators (I am a longtime SF resident but I am also a DC native and have known some congressional staff over the years), it is pretty rare that informed constituents write to them in a cogent and authentic voice about specific legislation, and they do pay attention to this.

Calls may work even more.

It won't work all the time and how much they do will depend on the issue and why they are supporting it etc. But it's worth a shot.

Remember I said: they should know you're paying attention. This can cause them to also pay attention.

California voters, write to your state senator. I'm in San Francisco, and I wrote to Scott Wiener, who recently voted to pass this out of committee.

Before that when it was still in the assembly, I wrote to Matt Haney, which didn't do much good because he voted for it both in committee and for passage.

But, I feel like bay area legislators need to know many of their constituents know this bill is misguided and are paying attention. The tech capital of the world shouldn't have artificially impaired tools.

asveikau··on Ford AI hiccups push carmaker to rehire ‘gray beard’ inspectors
> People who don't get results don't get more opportunities

This shows to me that you have a lot of faith in these companies that I can't share based on my own experiences.

My experience is more like: the defining characteristics of what gets you more opportunities is personal attachment to the boss. They like you? You get more. The whole performance review culture, as an example, is based around phony justifications around this. They get to re-define what "getting results" means to favor buddies. This is the only determining factor, period, and people come across to me as absurdly foolish when they believe something else.

Even from the selfish perspectives of these executives, it can be quite bad to isolate people from the consequences of bad decisions. It will prevent learning from mistakes, and lead to more bad decisions.

Which I guess is getting at another thing. The failure was predictable. People shouldn't be rewarded for failing to avoid obvious predictable failures. Maintaining their status quo could also be seen as rewarding them.

asveikau··on Apple raises prices of MacBooks, iPads
With all the inflation going on and the AI boom affecting things like memory prices, I was surprised that eg. MacBook neo was priced where it was.
asveikau··on Flock-Powered Police Chiefs Stalking Women Shows Why Warrants Are Needed
Look how much you've moved the goalposts.

First Seattle.

Then it's: what about small towns?

Now we suddenly have an additional requirement of matching stats from a different country.

Narrower and narrower the scope gets, before you admit that you're thinking about this the wrong way.

asveikau··on Flock-Powered Police Chiefs Stalking Women Shows Why Warrants Are Needed
What if what if what if?

That whole premise of "what if lots of crime happens" -- already false.

Did you know that most places in America are at historically low crime rates in most of our lifetimes? It is garbage to say this needs deep societal focus right now. I don't give a shit about the hypothetical hurt feelings of small town cops whining that they don't have always-on spy equipment.

asveikau··on Flock-Powered Police Chiefs Stalking Women Shows Why Warrants Are Needed
Cops can politely ask owners of private cameras for access for things like murder investigation. If the polite answer is no (most people will say yes), they can go to court for a subpoena. This has happened for a long time. This is how it should work. If the cops are too lazy or chicken to ask a judge while investigating a murder, they don't deserve the footage.
asveikau··on Alan Greenspan has died
This phrase was very popular for a good many years, popularized by Greenspan iirc: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irrational_exuberance

It described the dotcom bubble, but I seem to recall people were applying it to the 2000s housing market too. Tldr it was not a totally uncommon opinion during either of these bubbles to say there was a bubble going on.

asveikau··on Renting a sewing machine from the library
There is a very big difference between liking steak and categorizing large swaths of humanity as inferior. If you say "oh, of course Hitler grouped homeless people as inferior, antisocial beings and rounded them up and killed them, this is a reasonable thing to do and I bet he also liked steak!!", this strikes me as pretty unusual.

Yesterday you told me that I had things I needed to work on because I said these things are bad. But I'm guessing you have some hostility in yourself that you haven't addressed. Is there something in others you have trouble accepting? Something about yourself you do not accept, so you have to pin it on something external that makes you uncomfortable?

In my own life, I did go through a phase where I started to appreciate I was too harsh on things I didn't understand or had written off as not worth anything in my younger years. That was also the time I got rid of any fear I once had of the homeless. Today I volunteer in food pantries, as an example, and I remember in my mid 20s thinking food pantry participants might be "riffraff" who are somehow out to get me (they were not). My ability to see parallels to Nazism in your words are a result of those experiences.

asveikau··on Renting a sewing machine from the library
No, I'm very specifically talking about the propaganda that was used to send homeless people into death camps. If someone echoes the sentiments it should raise an eyebrow.
asveikau··on Renting a sewing machine from the library
From the website it seems like they're expecting that some people will do this with the intention of renting, but then decide to keep or not get around to the return process.
asveikau··on Hey, n00b, we didn't hire you to complete tasks
It's easier to dismiss me as having a screw loose than to look inward.
asveikau··on Hey, n00b, we didn't hire you to complete tasks
So much of this is written with an air of superiority over the noob. Indicates a bit of an ego problem.

Yes, the noobs are noobs, but the goal isn't to exercise your status over them. Or even to waste that much time trying to categorize between A, B, C. The goal should be to boost everybody's productivity instead of treating them like a game.
