astrowilliam··on Google, Microsoft, Qualcomm and Baidu Announce Joint Investment in CloudFlare
Does anyone have a link to a viable contender? I have used cloudflare in the past and it was great but now I need a new service.
astrowilliam··on What Ever Happened to Google Books?
I live in a very heavy snow area in the North East US (Buffalo region) and we definitely don't "dig up every street every winter for repairs". What is usually done is that when the snow thaws and the temperature warms a crew will come out and fill necessary holes in the pavement, not dig up streets. This process is very fast, it only takes a few minutes per hole and would definitely not include digging up the streets.
astrowilliam··on Yes I Saw Your Text, but Don’t Expect Me to Respond Instantly
As someone deeply entrenched in a mobile workspace I tend to ignore a lot of txts because they aren't important. If they were important the person that's texting me would go through the proper channels and write up specs, etc for me instead of blasting a "WE NEED THIS NEW THING ASAP!" style message. Those texts get ignored and I send the person a Hipchat message stating that they must go through proper channels or NO work will get done.

Writing the specs takes about 1-5 minutes and allows the developer to have a clear path to work from.

astrowilliam··on Jeff Bezos and the Amazon Way
A company that hires douche bags, apparently.

Actually, I filed a report when I left. I had a great track record until that point. My work was spotless, I think I was nice to everyone.

Within 1 week of me leaving my boss was promoted!

Not because he was good at his job, but because he was a bad manager. He was promoted to a position that didn't require him to have a team under him.

astrowilliam··on Jeff Bezos and the Amazon Way
I've worked at a big internet company where the culture was very toxic and not a good place to work, let alone be a normal human being. Pushy, rude and underhanded people were plentiful and were willing to throw you so far under the bus at any given moment that you would never find your way back out.

This became evident to me when I went on my lunch break after working there for about 4 months. Each employee was given 1 hour for lunch. I spent ~15 minutes walking to the local burrito place, grabbed a burrito which took about 10 minutes and then walked back. I was gone roughly 45 minutes.

The next day I was called into my managers office because someone didn't like the amount of time that I spent on my lunch break. Lucky for me I had my receipt and logged my work time so I showed him how much precious company time I spent galavanting to the burrito place.

I said something that I definitely should have. "Maybe the person that reported me should have been doing work instead of worrying about my lunch break. If this company can't treat its employees like humans, I don't plan on working here much longer"

I got written up for insubordination.

I was pissed.

I went back to my desk and typed up my 2 week notice.

Good riddance.

I worked in a corporate setting for about a year that handed out Nerf guns on day one (if you wanted one). At the time I was 35 years old. Let me tell you how I felt.

I grabbed that gun and started a war. People that were face deep in code picked up their guns and started smiling and shooting each other, running around, diving under desks. It was fun!

I made friends immediately and are some of my best friends to this day, 4 yeas later. People that are friends have fun. It wasn't forced. If you didn't want to play, you didn't have to play. The morale picked up 100% after the game.

We were NEVER treated like children. Ever. We never had "nap time" or "snack time", that's ridiculous. We were treated as professionals that like to take breaks and mess around while creating great products.

I did great work while I was there and so did the other people at that company. I met some amazingly talented people that are still at that company. They stay there because they enjoy the work and they enjoy the environment.

Thanks for the feedback and I totally agree. We are working on all of the things you mentioned above. It should be in the next release, Monday.

Thanks, man. I want to keep it super simple, no distractions. I'm sure it's not for everyone, but I have a vision and I'm working towards it. Glad you stopped by.

Thanks for the feedback. We are playing around with different layouts to see what people like more, so far the big picture layout isn't exactly what we are looking for but we are still working on it. I'm wondering if you actually read the article titles or if you just closed it down before noticing any of them?
astrowilliam··on Front Page Subreddits Go Private in Response to Firing of Reddit Admin
This is the exact reason why we started PushdUp. As a long time reddit user I was getting sick of the drama that was happening and decided to take it upon myself to create something different. We are still in VERY early alpha so there are bound to be some bugs. Come join the revolution. http://www.pushdup.com , feedback is welcome and encouraged.

astrowilliam··on Bootstrap 3.3.5 released
I just spend 6 hours on a project rewriting Bootstraps columns, etc using @extend in SASS because bootstrap columns are not semantic. yuck.
astrowilliam··on Medium app update publicly shames developer
I'd assume this is a joke between coworkers. It's good to see some companies out there having a sense of humor.
astrowilliam··on How to work effectively with WordPress Experts
Working within Wordpress every day and also being a developer of WP, this is solid advice.
astrowilliam··on NASA's Curiosity Eyes Prominent Mineral Veins on Mars
I am 100% behind scientific research of Mars but I'd be very interested in seeing what kind of companies would spring up almost overnight if they knew they could make multiple billions of dollars and also how fast we would put people on the red planet if a profit was involved.
astrowilliam··on My client was a bully and I fired him
I have talked with so many developers that have had very similar clients and they let them run all over them, even after they explained the terms of the contract.

He and I both went over the contract together, we both knew the details. He treated me like garbage and bullied me until I couldn't stand it any more.

I didn't let the bully win and he didn't get the satisfaction of bullying me any more. Not a bad deal, if you ask me.

astrowilliam··on My client was a bully and I fired him
Thanks :) He even had that tough guy voice. HEY YO! Cringe when I even think of it.
astrowilliam··on Red Flags for Freelance Web Developers
Forgot about the NDA. I've been approached with that many times and each time I've flat out refused to sign it.

astrowilliam··on Ask HN: What would you be doing if you weren't a developer?
I was once a snowboard instructor, outdoors, athletic, people. Really fun. Pay was barely over minimum, but I had the time of my life. I spent plenty of time in the woods exploring.
astrowilliam··on What Happened When Marissa Mayer Tried to Be Steve Jobs
Example of someone who doesn't do all of their own work, Martha Stewart. Sure she does some work, but she has a very talented assortment of professionals that help her blog and create content.

I don't think Martha has the time to put together slideshows like this one.

astrowilliam··on Ask HN: Why do you code?
That's what I ended up doing, took on some side projects to keep my head clear first and then used them as portfolio fodder for a new job.

Good luck!

astrowilliam··on Ask HN: OS X folks – do you use Finder?
Everyday. I'm heavily using photos in my line of work so it's necessary.
