astrowilliam··on Windows 10 is making too many PCs obsolete
If it runs fine with its current OS and hardware, there's no need to upgrade. Keep your current OS, your current hardware and you're fine. It's not Microsofts duty to support very old hardware.
astrowilliam··on Windows 10 is making too many PCs obsolete
If you didn't need to upgrade, you wouldn't have. You got a gaming computer because you wanted to upgrade to faster hardware and a faster GPU chipset.

The hardware isn't just a chipset, it's the fans, the drives, etc.

astrowilliam··on Windows 10 is making too many PCs obsolete
A machine from 2013 is older, it's slower, the hardware has seen better days and there are features built into a modern OS that just won't work with a chip set that the user bought from Best Buy at the bargain rack.

We all wanted Windows and MS to push computing forward for the longest time and now that they actually are, people are bitching about it. Not because it's bad for business, it's bad for them personally and anecdotally. Go figure.

This article seems like a rant and not supported by data.

astrowilliam··on How WordPress Ate the Internet in 2016 and the World in 2017
To be fair, free WP plugin code is available to the public so you can check it out and see if it's trust worthy or not.
astrowilliam··on Show HN: Stop the Bullshit
We need to make things ridiculously simple for the users. A meter on an article showing them if its true or not will likely be ignored.

I like this approach, big, bold and in your face. We need to call out all the fake, garbage news out there.

astrowilliam··on MacBook Pro
I sit at an Apple desktop (macbook pro with 2 apple monitors) for most of my day so I can use my giant screen to design interfaces and I'm not cramped into a laptop's tiny 13 inch screen. The last office of about 5,000 devs and designers that I worked at had desktops with monitors. No one worked on laptops except a few people here and there.

I would lose HOURS of productivity per week if I were not on a dual screen set up. It's just better for what I do.

That being said, if I need to go mobile, which I normally don't I use my macbook. I think I've disconnected my macbook from my monitors probably 2 times in the last 2 years.

astrowilliam··on Is Faster-Than-Light Travel or Communication Possible? (1997)
And in the early 1000s humans believed that we would never fly a few people strapped to a giant rocket to the moon. They believed that because the technology to do it hadn't been invented yet and we had no idea it was possible.

We have to learn how to do it and then we will do it.

astrowilliam··on Snapchat Passes Twitter in Daily Usage
Maybe dhimes uses adblock and literally had no idea that there were ads on FB. I have been using ABP for about a year and never see ads on FB. I literally had no idea that 70% of the real estate is filled with ads either until you said something about it.
astrowilliam··on The Day the Moon Blew Up
Definitely one of my favorite books. I bought a hard copy and read through it immediately. Then I got the audio book and listened to it in my car while commuting. What a great piece of work.
astrowilliam··on McLaren needs Compaq laptops with bespoke CA cards to maintain the remaining F1s
You should write an article about the B-2, I think that would be great.
astrowilliam··on Tech workers are increasingly looking to leave Silicon Valley
The fact that they have 4 acres of land is much more valuable to his kids than having to share that property with a bunch of other people in the city, in my opinion. There is room to expand, build, hike, bike, walk, climb a tree, breathe fresh air that doesn't smell like pavement, enjoy nature.

Plus, who said they don't like cold weather? I grew up on the East Coast and I love Winter. I love seasons. I love snowboarding and hiking in the Winter.

I lived in SF for a while and didn't really enjoy it at all. Too much congestion, too many people and no fresh air. I could barely see the stars at night.

That being said. To each their own.

He's very smart, and a good dude. I'm happy to have had the opportunity to have him in my world for the brief time that we were talking. I could only imagine the camping shenanigans he got into!

I interviewed with these guys! I've spoken with one of the founders, Roger Lee, at length about their product and I have to say that they are amazing people with great vision. Even though I didn't get the gig, it's great to see them doing well! Good things happen to good people.

Your last statement really hit a note with me. I've been spending my life chasing money and recently realized that I was just filling a hole. I have found someone that is willing to go adventuring with me. Screw the boring office worker life, it's time to start living. Good luck and have an incredible life!
astrowilliam··on Show HN: My first Wordpress template in 5 years. Feedback, please?
I consider this a basic blogger template, nothing too fancy, just good and solid.

This thing has been sitting on my "to do" list for a while and I decided to crank it out to get it out of my head. Any feedback would be appreciated, thank you.

astrowilliam··on Stupid Patent of the Month: Microsoft’s Design Patent on a Slider
If you want to go the route of people using the idea of things that have been used for thousands of years in patents, no one should be able to patent a wheel design because wheels have been around for a very long time and every wheel is a derivative of the original wheel design. Sure, wheels are a utility, but the design of a wheel is using pieces from other people's ideas.

Patents are silly anyway, imho.

astrowilliam··on Early employees take the most risk today
If you don't mind me asking, if the company failed to turn a profit what was your next step? Savings gone, no money coming in, living with your parents and not being actively sought after. It sounds like you went "all in" which is very admirable.
astrowilliam··on Salesforce Lightning Design System
I am skeptical that this will be kept up to date when a new manager thinks it's "good enough" and takes the wind out of the sails. Or if someone gets laid off that's in charge of the project. If they were to open source this project it would continue to live on even if the original contributors are no longer involved.

Open Source always wins in cases like this.

astrowilliam··on How Will We Get Off Mars?
I think the first humans to go to the red planet will actually orbit and not touch down. They will stay in orbit and either pilot robots on the ground or study what happens to the body during long space flight. This will help future space faring people that visit Mars and beyond.
