astrolx··on Square Theory
How can someone hate "étui" so bad !?
astrolx··on By default, Signal doesn't recall
I'd like to see stats about that middle user though, I would think that this usecase decreases fast as things are moving to the browser (Office366, Drive, mail, even corporate apps).

Other types of usecases have gone very Linux-friendly recently (e.g video games thanks to Valve).

astrolx··on By Default, Signal Doesn't Recall
This. I bought a System76 laptop in 2011 which is still working very well with lubuntu for office and browser and such, it's now the laptop of my neighbourhood association. I could without problem upgrade RAM and drive to SSD, I could even swap the keyboard after I broke it.

I bought a new one from them this year, still incredible hardware.

My only issue with them, which is a big one, is that they ship only from USA. So as EU customer I have to pay VAT on top!

astrolx··on Material 3 Expressive
OMG I thought it was something wrong on my end, privacy add-on or whatnot. Glad to see they just lost it.

astrolx··on Hyperwood – Open-Source Furniture
This is great. Furniture from one type of wood piece. Went recently through a similar process to optimize building bird nests from one type of wood planks from the local sawmill. I think I'll give the hyperwood bench a try next week.
astrolx··on Scientists find strongest evidence yet of life on an alien planet
Funny enough, DMS is a fermentation byproduct in beer brewing and it's detectable for us at low concentration. The off-flavor it can cause is indeed "cooked corn" or "cabbage". [https://www.homebrewersassociation.org/how-to-brew/acceptabl...].
astrolx··on Ereader Easy Swedish
Sweden has 'lätt svenska' (easy Swedish) radio and TV news - https://www.svtplay.se/nyheter-pa-latt-svenska - https://www.sverigesradio.se/radioswedenpalattsvenska

pretty useful for learning indeed!

astrolx··on Half-Life
We boosted the anti-mass spectrometer 105 percent. Bit of a gamble, but we need the extra resolution.

astrolx··on Wasp-127B: Scientists discover giant planet with super fast winds
True ! The capitalization is not quite right, it should read WASP-127b actually
astrolx··on Wasp-127B: Scientists discover giant planet with super fast winds
Great questions, thanks!

> Could you provide anymore insight into how this was achieved? The observations we have consist of spectra - light from the star is split into wavelengths with a fine resolution (we can distinguish very small differences in wavelength/frequency). When the planet passes between the star and us, its atmosphere absorbs a tiny fraction of the stellar light and we can see that : Fingerprints in the spectrum that are associated to molecules we have characterized in the lab (here we see carbon monoxide and water). The way we can isolate the signature from the planet - compared to the signature from the star or say the water in the earth atmosphere - is that the planet is moving and its velocity with regards to us is varying ! The Doppler effect (think ambulance coming towards you making the sound higher pitch) means that the signature from the planet also get shifted in frequency.

> Any interesting challenges associated with the measurement? Yeah, one of the big challenge is that the Earth atmosphere is not so transparent in the near-infrared so it absorbs a lot of light and pollutes a lot our data. Getting rid of the atmospheric spectrum with high enough accuracy is challenging, but we manage - either doing some physics and modelling it -- and/or using some data analysis tool (PCA for instance).

> What are the practical limitations of this methodology? The main one is the amount of light we need, that's why this instrument sits at the Very Large Telescope (the primary mirror is 8m in diameter) one of the largest European telescope. We need to have very good signal, as we are splitting the light into many wavelengths. And we cannot just take very long exposures, because the transits of the planets in front of the star is done in a limited time (few hours)

> How did you pick the planet as a target to measure? Normally we start with a big spreadsheet of all planets, and we work out which ones are observable from a given telescope, which stars are bright enough, which planet could have observable signal. WASP-127 was studied in the past and other teams already detected some molecules, but we did not expect to measure this kind of winds.

astrolx··on Show HN: Atlas of Space
I don't know any solar physicist who calls our sun "sol" (and I know many), neither have I come across scientific papers doing so. A sol is a martian day though!

Indeed, and to be fair most people I know who were reticent to the new Linky were not "fearing that the new meters would fry their brain using Bill Gates’ evil 5G Wi-Fi waves", but were concerned about their privacy.
astrolx··on Will we have a negative leap second? [pdf] (2022)
Astronomy is a big field. In my field it is either UTC or TDB.
astrolx··on Will we have a negative leap second? [pdf] (2022)
There are also variants, for some science cases it is preferrable to get out of the Earth referential and move to e.g the barycentric reference frame and use the Barycentric Julian Date [1], which can itself be expressed in different standards (UTC, TAI (atomic time), TDB etc ...)

astrolx··on Wasp-193B, a giant planet with a density similar to that of cotton candy
Usually, you would see the sign of this in the data - because we can actually detect the gap between the planet and eventual rings. But if the gap is extremely small, then it could be a possibility.
astrolx··on Wasp-193B, a giant planet with a density similar to that of cotton candy
AFAIK the Shoemaker-Levy impact was useful for other studies, but not so for the density/mass of Jupiter (also as per your link).

Jupiter is full of surprises still (mostly about its interior). However, the assessments made in this article about the mass and radius of the planet are using very basic physical laws (mostly Kepler laws from the 1600s).

astrolx··on TfL's simple pop-up message led to a significant drop in paper ticket sales
The Netherlands used to have this system over the full country (OV chipcard) when I lived there (it seems to still exist), the card could be anonymous too.

After the French ticketing system, this felt magical to me.
