astonex··on Cut Russia from GitHub due to invasion of Ukraine
For even less, for just being Ukranian.
astonex··on Cut Russia from GitHub due to invasion of Ukraine
Ukranians literally have guns to their heads. But lets not ban Russians from using a website because it might hurt their feelings.
astonex··on Cut Russia from GitHub due to invasion of Ukraine
American Whataboutism.

Regardless, Github is American so the point doesn't stand here. Russian services are free to restrict US users if they wish

astonex··on Cut Russia from GitHub due to invasion of Ukraine
Just like Ukranians are being murdered.
astonex··on Times are great for programmers now. How does it end?
>The CEO’s job is to make as much profit as possible

It doesn't have to be, especially if the company isn't public. Their job is to run the company successfully. Part of that is keeping their employees happy and retaining talent.

>If a new IDE shows up and they can deliver stuff 5% faster, that means you can have 5% less programmers!

That's never how it works though. As workers have become more efficient they have been required to output more and more.

Overall a lot of claims in this blog are unsubstantiated

astonex··on Google Search Is Dying
It's perhaps a little bit early in its creation to be sharing this but I am working on a new search that should help to fix the problems mentioned in the article, https://namusearch.com/. It allows you to build (and share with others) a curated list of websites that you want to use for searches

Any chance you're familiar with Naver in South Korea? Naver has communities which are created by users and are called Cafes. The Cafes are essentially message boards

As far as I've read, they undertest a lot in Japan.

It also probably helps that like other asian countries they wear masks all the time, everywhere and without complaint.

Japan also currently doesn't let anyone in to the country.

astonex··on How I learned to stop worrying and push to master
Of course there are. For example a one line change to make the text-size slightly bigger.
astonex··on C++ Coroutines Do Not Spark Joy
That's what code standards are for, so you're all writing code that everyone can understand. Seems like a failure of the tech managers
astonex··on No, we won’t have a video call for that
I work as a non-native speaker in Korea. Speaking and listening is just insanely harder than reading and writing. I can be productive as long as I'm exchanging messages on Github/Messenger, but meetings are horrendous.

If the change is extremely trivial then so is reviewing that change. Not much time is lost
astonex··on Fasting lowers blood pressure by reshaping the gut microbiota
As you're on a bike, it would be a lot better to get a power meter, take an FTP test and then ride 20% above your FTP to properly ride in an anaerobic zone. You'll quickly find that long anaerobic exercise isn't possible

Heart rate is too affected by other factors like hydration, temperature, stress etc to be reliable.

You can get an indoor trainer like a wahoo kickr which attaches to your back wheel.
astonex··on Why is load balancing gRPC tricky?
A bit off-topic but the moving particles in the background of this page make it really hard for me to focus on the text
astonex··on gRPC Is Easy to Misconfigure
The issues in this blog post seem like non-issues.

You probably shouldn't be sending back >8kb error messages to the client. The server should log error details locally and the logs should be inspected or scraped separately. The client doesn't need to know the full details like the contents of a variable length DS

I develop gRPC clients and servers at work that handle about 40k QPS (typically <50ms response times) whilst using default gRPC configuration. The only changes I had to make was to the max message size.

astonex··on Google is not a search engine, but an ad engine
Nowadays my searches always consist of "reddit + search" to get actual user reviews or comments

I don't think supervisord is necessary when you're in a container environment. Just write a healthcheck to bring up a new container when something goes wrong
astonex··on Productivity and the Workweek (2000)
Ah, I completely misread it both times.
astonex··on Productivity and the Workweek (2000)
Well for starters, looking at the charts in the link 30 hours is still much more productive than the 40hr 1975 worker.

As a programmer I'm not doing focused programming for any more than 30 hours a week anyway

astonex··on Productivity and the Workweek (2000)
Something like 30 hours a week, 4 days a week cant come soon enough.

Right now I work 40-45, 5 days a week and it feels like all I do is work and chores.

astonex··on Python Is Eating the World
>Most people just cross their fingers and hope dependencies don't change

Is there anything wrong with pip freeze > requirements.txt and then pip install -r requirements.txt ? This would install the exact versions

astonex··on Filling hospitals with art reduces patient stress, anxiety and pain
I don't think that's true. What we don't like is any talk of Americanising the NHS.
astonex··on To Break Google’s Monopoly on Search, Make Its Index Public
A list of websites and their content is really not useful at all. Anyone can get this themselves with some really simple programming.

The actual hard part is when it comes to ranking and sorting the data in any useful way, and doing it within like 100ms. Plus various other issues like spam protection etc. This is where Google excels (at least in my opinion).

astonex··on US launches inquiry into French plan to tax tech giants
It's easier to get it accepted with a small rate. Later on it can be increased.
astonex··on Britain adopts 2050 net zero emissions target
2050 is too late. Make it 2025 at the most otherwise no one in power now will have to deal with it, and it's right now that we need to start making big changes.
