astlouis44··on Wgpu-0.10 released: WebGPU implementation now in pure Rust
WebGPU is going to be huge for Unity/Unreal browser games, and instrumental in architecting the open metaverse via the web.
astlouis44··on 0 A.D. A free, open-source game of ancient warfare
Wondering the same.
astlouis44··on Show HN: Judo - Build Native App Experiences with No Code
OK I have to know - what framework did you use to make your front end landing page? It's absolute beautiful.

I'm guessing React?

astlouis44··on A Framework for the Metaverse
Exactly, and the delivery model for this will likely be HTML5 via the web.
astlouis44··on Unity to acquire Parsec for $320M
Don't know why Unity is pursuing cloud, you're still going to need a good network speed. They'd be better served investing further in WebGL support, specifically in reducing the file binary size so we can have lightning fast load times for console-quality games running at near native performance in the browser.

Shameless plug, my startup is working on exactly this at the moment but for Unreal Engine 4, but we have plans to bring this tooling to Unity as well. The web has the opportunity to become the #1 distribution platform of choice for real time 3D developers, and it's the path to the decentralized metaverse.

astlouis44··on Unity to acquire Parsec for $320M
Our startup is working on Unity and Unreal Engine games and applications exporting to WebGL, targeting Chromebooks. Join our Discord if you're interested in learning more:

astlouis44··on Mark Zuckerberg’s Metaverse already sucks
Refreshing to see someone else realize this, the metaverse will arrive when WASM/WebGPU/WebXR is the dominant way of delivering immersive websites. Our startup is working on providing this support for exporting to the web for Unity and Unreal engines, so virtual worlds can reside inside the. browser.

Benefits are that developers don't have to give a cut to the Oculus store and Facebook, and for users it will be nearly as performant as a native application. Cross-platform, meaning VR applications that work across any headset including Apple's upcoming HMD is a huge bonus, because they will work day one if Apple does ship support for WebXR.

Thanks for trying it out!!!

Yes there is, if you're on mobile. I will join now and walk you through

astlouis44··on Facebook has sold 4M Quest 2 headsets in the US, recall docs reveal
No, but you can access VRland which is sort of like a web-based VRChat. Social 3D/VR via WebGL, WebAssembly, and WebXR that works cross-platform via the browser, not just limited to headsets but can be accessed via phones and computers.

astlouis44··on Zuckerberg tells investors that Facebook will turn into a ‘metaverse’ company
Facebook Horizon is not the metaverse. VRland.io is the closest to the metaverse as any platform I've seen out there, it can be described as a web-based VRchat that not only works on headsets via WebXR, but on mobile phones and computers via WebGL. The metaverse needs to be a spatial, immersive layer that's architected off the back of our current 2.5D web. No 30% fees from walled gardens, and interoperability due to the platform-agnostic nature of the web.

Try out VRland here: https://vrland.io/

astlouis44··on Facebook has sold 4M Quest 2 headsets in the US, recall docs reveal
We have this functionality over at vrland.io as well, and it doesn't require going through FB's walled garden Oculus store.

It's like a web-based VRChat, so it will work on any device with a browser. If Apple ships WebXR when they release their headset next year, it will work by default there too. Universal, decentralized, and free of walled gardens. That's the definition of the metaverse! Our team is on a mission to build a immersive version of the web in 3D and VR.

Not a big enough install base for the metaverse though. They need to target WebGL, WebAssembly and WebXR to create a 3D social space where you can jump into games and virtual worlds to play with others, or just hang out. A web-based VRChat that works universally via the browser, including headsets via WebXR.
astlouis44··on Facebook creates exec team to work on metaverse
There is no way Horizon qualifies as the metaverse. Zuck should be looking closer at WebGL and WebXR.
astlouis44··on iOS 15 Preview
So excited for WebGL2!
astlouis44··on Mark Zuckerberg says Facebook will turn into a ‘metaverse’
Trying to bootstrap the metaverse, bear with me.
astlouis44··on Mark Zuckerberg says Facebook will turn into a ‘metaverse’
Thanks for the feedback! What device did you try on?

Love the blunt and honest feedback. The platform comes alive in VR btw, but understand if you don’t have a headset. You can start building using the editor tool and share your room with others to view it in a social manner.

If there’s any features you’d think would make this more like a proper metaverse, please let me know.

astlouis44··on Mark Zuckerberg says Facebook will turn into a ‘metaverse’
Check out vrland! It's a social 3D/VR metaverse platform on the web. Decentralized and works everywhere including VR headsets via WebXR.

astlouis44··on Mark Zuckerberg says Facebook will turn into a ‘metaverse’
Horizon is a terrible experience and won't be the MVP of the metaverse even when it's launched publicly out of beta.

Try vrland.io instead, it's a web-based social 3D/VR platform that runs everywhere with a browser which includes WebXR.

It's my startup's take on what the metaverse should look like - entirely web-based, so it works everywhere. It's a 3D/VR social platform where you can upload photos, videos, and even 3D models into rooms. Complete customizability plus easily configurable avatars.

astlouis44··on Netflix Plans to Offer Video Games in Push Beyond Films, TV
They need to buy CD Projekt Red. This would give them a unified trans media strategy that encompasses games, TV and new formats like virtual reality.
astlouis44··on Open 3D Engine
Our startup is working on it!
astlouis44··on No-code WebGL gaming platform raises $15M Series A
The web is turning into the ultimate gaming platform. No 30% fees for developers, and instantly shareable games via URL's. Steam and the App Stores will be disrupted long term, especially with web-based no-code game editors where you quickly build a 3D world and publish it to billions of supported devices.
astlouis44··on Facebook hits $1T market cap after federal court dismisses
Their VR/AR efforts will be the catalyst that rockets them to $2T (and higher) mark my words!
astlouis44··on Windows 11, Amazon, and Uncomfortable Questions
Second this, especially for games. Avoiding the 30% and bypassing Steam and the App Stores is going to be huge for game devs building in Unity and Unreal.
