ashu··on New users: Welcome. Please read the site guidelines.
Seems like HN should ask a GMail Goggles-like "Are you drunk?" question before you are allowed to post comments!
ashu··on Sad Day For Microsoft: 5,000 Laid Off, Earnings And Revenues Down
This is a good opportunity / excuse to get rid of some of the severely under performing people.

ashu··on Distributed personal wiki - server-free (well, kinda)
My vim and personal configs are versioned and part of the code repo! On any particular machine, I just use a repo cloned from the dropbox repo.
ashu··on Distributed personal wiki - server-free (well, kinda)
I did a similar thing. I put my personal git repo inside dropbox. It's like github for free private 2GB repositories.
ashu··on Hacker News doesn't validate
That (= treating as object code) does not preclude producing validating HTML. In fact, on the contrary, that is the only way (IMHO) one can produce validating HTML - if your HTML all goes through a common piece of code for rendering tags. See AppJet's HTML producing JS functions, for example.
ashu··on GitCred: PageRank applied to the GitHub users/followers graph, implemented in Clojure.
PageRank is only one of the signals Google computes while ranking pages. From what I have heard, they have more than a few hundred different signals they compute - and are constantly iterating on to keep the search quality up.
ashu··on The End of the Financial World as We Know It
So, apparently (according to the article), the bond raters are paid by the bond issuers. How in the world is that not a conflict of interest? There must be some "pro" for the financial world being this way?
ashu··on Dabbleboard Pro now available
Congrats! I continue to be impressed with this product...
ashu··on Laying off George
I would wager that a comment flippantly (and ignorantly) disparaging a very useful site which unleashed quite a bit of creativity everywhere, is much much lamer.
ashu··on Roger Ebert: Celebrity culture is infantilizing us. We are being trained not to think.
Wow, that is very surprising. Any links to read about this?

Paxos-style distributed consensus?
ashu··on Balsamiq hits $100,000 in revenue
It is obviously a large part, but he did not get that publicity automatically. It seems he worked out and implemented a very effective strategy for getting that publicity organically. So, plenty of hard work and ingenuity involved there as well.

ashu··on GitHub adds code search
None, AFAIK. And I don't see a desperate need for any, either. The submission will get voted up on its merits regardless of who submitted it.
ashu··on Will Gmail Leave Anything For Me To Do on My Own?
Wow, what a troll. And I am feeding it, but had to say it.

Hats off to Joe for his exceptional efforts. You made the right decision, Joe. Keep up the great work!

I very much look forward to your "simple" code snippets.

Huge congrats, I loved it back when you announced it here, and I love it still...
ashu··on Apple blocks Pragmatic Programmers' release of iPhone book for developers
Relax! People are just regurgitating the same stuff over and over again. And it is easy to get worked up by reading (intentional and unintentional) inflammatory remarks. If you like the product and think it makes sense for you, buy it.
ashu··on Apple blocks Pragmatic Programmers' release of iPhone book for developers
That's a bad flamebait-ish headline. There is no news here. Everybody knows the NDA is still very much active. And, as bad as that is, it means the book was not going to be published, and it isn't.
ashu··on DropSend Acquired by MakeMyComputerFaster.com
Indeed, it does sound like that from some of the bits in that posting. "put your webapp on the chopping block"!
ashu··on Android Again
It continually amazes me why people have such intense hatred of Apple. At least, you give credit, but still: "bastards"? Abusive contracts: who knows who forced an abusive contract for the phone? I agree with you that cheaper, working things will beat the crap out of the iPhone, but still: "bastards"? What did they do to you, man?
ashu··on Android Again
But none are a generic computing device, and I don't think they'll ever be

Matt's central assumption is that they will become generic computing devices and I concur. Why do you think they won't ever be generic computing devices? I think of my iPhone as pretty generic and "capable" of doing a lot of things. I had a dumb phone-only-phone a year ago.

What is the lure going to be for people to stop moving to webapps, and suddenly embrace an open platform and installable apps?

The fact that internet connectivity on a desktop vs. on your mobile device is different by an order of magnitude. When you get ubiquitous and fast internet on the mobile device (not some bizarre spotty coverage), then things will change. Maybe Europe is ahead in regards to that, but in the US, I don't see that happening very soon.

Edit: oh, and also the processor speeds. So, basically I will bet on webapps for mobile after 3-4 years. Until then, at least, installable apps will work better.

Another Edit: perhaps, when something like Google Gears is everywhere, it might change. But offline support - both for code and data - is kind of essential.

Couldn't have agreed more. It's one of the most refreshing articles I have read in a long time!

Yes, they do. That's why Buxfer could use Amazon FPS for enabling person-to-person transfers, but we couldn't use PayPal, or do it ourselves.
