ashleyn··on In 2006, Hitachi developed a 0.15mm-sized RFID chip
In an early example of conspiracy theories that would eventually envelop social media, I actually remember internet commenters pointing to the previous generation of these as supposed "proof" that the government was embedding RFID chips in banknotes to track people (following a blog article by Alex Jones): https://news.slashdot.org/story/04/03/02/0535225/do-your-20-...

ashleyn··on The Framework Desktop is a beast
How is AMD GPU compatibility with leading generative AI workflows? I'm under the impression everything is CUDA.
ashleyn··on Long-term exposure to outdoor air pollution linked to increased risk of dementia
One major reason I'm working extra years despite being FI is so I have money to provide for memory care for my parents if they end up needing that. They have downright nothing to their name and memory care can easily run into half a million dollars total.
ashleyn··on My Ideal Array Language
It's giving APL: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/APL_(programming_language)
ashleyn··on Stop Building AI Tools Backwards
I've found the best ways to use AI when coding are:

* Sophisticated find and replace i.e. highlight a bunch of struct initalisations and saying "Convert all these to Y". (Regex was always a PITA for this, though it is more deterministic.)

* When in an agentic workflow, treating it as a higher level than ordinary code and not so much as a simulated human. I.e. the more you ask it to do at once, the less it seems to do it well. So instead of "Implement the feature" you'd want to say "Let's make a new file and create stub functions", "Let's complete stub function 1 and have it do x", "Complete stub function 2 by first calling stub function 1 and doing Y", etc.

* Finding something in an unfamiliar codebase or asking how something was done. "Hey copilot, where are all the app's routes defined?" Best part is you can ask a bunch of questions about how a project works, all without annoying some IRC greybeard.

ashleyn··on SCP-055 is an "antimeme" – it erases itself from memory when observed
The best I can do for monads is "it's like Option and Result in rust"
ashleyn··on ICEBlock, an app for anonymously reporting ICE sightings, goes viral
It's not legal federally. Not that I agree with giving him shit about it, but the federal government basically considers it the same thing as fentanyl. Don't admit it on any federal application.
ashleyn··on Don’t use “click here” as link text (2001)
Back in the days when Google was still driven largely by Pagerank, I remember googling the phrase "click here" for shits and giggles. The top links were for Flash player, Silverlight, and Java. Meaning that these were the most common links for the text "click here" - i.e. "Need Flash? Click here." Relic of a dark age where nothing was accessible and the performance didn't matter.
ashleyn··on Twitter's new encrypted DMs aren't better than the old ones
The footnote elaborates on why the author used the old name.
ashleyn··on Autopsy of an LHC Beam Dump
All I could think of was Half-Life. "Gordon!! The upstream extruded graphite disc has indeed been cracked!!"
ashleyn··on 4chan Sharty Hack And Janitor Email Leak
Neither site is a den of repute but it's notable that I can still say the word "cisgender" on 4chan, or openly insult moot and call him whatever I want without being banned for it (while mainstream sites select who is protected from harassment and who isn't, either along political lines or who owns the site).
ashleyn··on CT scans could cause 5% of cancers, study finds; experts note uncertainty
Seems pretty common sense to me that you're gonna have more people with hidden cancers coming in to get CT for phantom pains, etc and later discover they had cancer all along. That doesn't mean CT caused it. Did the study control for this?
ashleyn··on CT scans could cause 5% of cancers, study finds; experts note uncertainty
MRI doesn't use ionising radiation so it's a stretch. Most likely cause would have to be some toxic effect of the contrast dye (as opposed to any sort of ionising radiation), but no compelling evidence exists for that.
ashleyn··on EFF Border Search Pocket Guide
Honestly the only thing I can really suggest at this point is have separate devices used when traveling internationally, and be mindful of what you access or put on them. Plausible deniability boot volume works good for laptops. Dunno if any phone supports that.
ashleyn··on French scientist denied entry into the U.S., French government says
Has anyone checked the scientist's social media? Border agencies are known to monitor social media. If he did something like, say, express sympathy for Luigi Mangione or Tesla vandals, this would definitely dovetail with a "terrorism" rejection.
ashleyn··on Pets Can't Stop Watching 'Flow,' the Oscar-Winning Cat Movie
Huh. Guess Preston Rhinelander from Scrooged was onto something.
ashleyn··on AI is killing some companies, yet others are thriving – let's look at the data
Yahoo Answers walked so Quora can run.

Quora today is mostly stuff like "can u get pargnet from givng oral????" or "Is it normal to find my sister attractive?"

It's like the Nazi bar problem except instead of Nazis, it's low quality troll bait.

ashleyn··on FAA targeting Verizon contract in favor of SpaceX
Unreal how naked corruption is now.
ashleyn··on A possible future of Python in the browser
You could, theoretically, render django templates in the browser today. But you'll still need to contend with using a thin JS layer to access the browser dom. Mooting any real performance benefit, at least if you want accessibility and not a 00s-style flashblob of a page. AFAIK direct dom bindings for wasm aren't being taken seriously and may never really happen.
ashleyn··on Personal Software Is Becoming a Trend

ashleyn··on Show HN: I built an active community of trans people online
this administration in particular has made it a priority to make examples of trans people and use them for political points. make sure you have ALL your legal ducks in a row if you're going to run something like this.
ashleyn··on Under new law, cops bust famous cartoonist for AI-generated CSAM
This is where my technical knowledge of genAI breaks down, but wouldn't an image generator be unable to produce such imagery unless honest-to-god CSAM were used in the training of it?
ashleyn··on Under new law, cops bust famous cartoonist for AI-generated CSAM
I always found these arguments to be contrived especially when it's already well-known that in the tradition of every Western government, there is no actual imperative for every crime to be linked directly to a victim. It's a far better argument to me, to suggest that the societal utility in using the material to identify and remove paedophiles before they have an actual victim far exceeds the utility of any sort of "freedom" to such material.
ashleyn··on I've acquired a new superpower
my grandmother used to tell me if i went cross-eyed too much, they'd get stuck like that. it took me until a google search at age 15 to see that was an old wives' tale...
ashleyn··on Nvidia announces next-gen RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 GPUs
most household circuits can only support 15-20 amps at the plug. there will be an upper limit to this and i suspect this is nvidia compromising on TDP in the short term to move faster on compute

ashleyn··on Can LLMs write better code if you keep asking them to “write better code”?
better question; can they do it without re-running if you ask them to "write better code the first time"?
ashleyn··on I wrote a Game Boy Advance game in Zig
windows 95 did come with Qbasic for MS-DOS. it wasn't the latest and greatest, but it did contribute to a moderately large online scene of kids making Qbasic games or Windows-like Qbasic GUIs for DOS.
