asdfman123··on Gemini 3.8 Live and 3.8 Live Extended Thinking
I love Gemini in Google Maps for long drives. I start getting bored of music and podcasts and start grilling it with random questions I've always wondered about.

I don't think it's effective though because you're not actually addressing the reality on the ground. To pursuade someone you need to start with their assumptions.

If your argument doesn't even seem aware of them, then they won't listen.

I guess you could say "who cares, X is evil anyway, might as well try" but it just seems ineffective and frankly a little naive.

asdfman123··on GPT-5.6 Luna vs. GPT-6 Astra: Is a $1.20 Model Good Enough for Code Review?
It's almost certainly Gemini but I don't know if it's Flash or Pro.

I would assume though advanced reasoning models would be best, especially since it's out of band. If I were building it maybe I'd run two adversarial models.

asdfman123··on GPT-5.6 Luna vs. GPT-6 Astra: Is a $1.20 Model Good Enough for Code Review?
I have no idea how it works internally. Your assumptions about its workings are as good as mine.

It leaves comments though like a human reviewer would. I assume the key is a good prompt making sure the comments aren't too frivolous.

People with no imagination are rewriting my industry as well
asdfman123··on GPT-5.6 Luna vs. GPT-6 Astra: Is a $1.20 Model Good Enough for Code Review?
Nah, we have AI code review at Google and it is shockingly good at catching bugs no one would have noticed. I absolutely depend on it now.
asdfman123··on Dropping eBPF CPU Cost by About 90% with Memoization (Not AI Gen)
I don't know what any of these acronyms mean. With just a little more explanation the article could be accessible to a wider developer audience.

My biggest pet peeve is when people on sites like HN assume software should be tailor made for their objectives and not the company's objectives.

Sometimes the objectives align, but not always. And yes, the world would be a better place if they were better aligned, but we don't live in that world.

I'm sure X's motivation is something along the lines of forcing logins creates more users, or the downside of scraping outweighs the benefits.

asdfman123··on Cloudflare AKE cuts origin HelloRetryRequests from 52% to 3.7%
The irony is that everything about this speaks to vibe coding. The writeup was written by Claude, in a good way (E.g "while the milliseconds are important, that second part may matter more").

I think things like this are now possible through vibecoding.

asdfman123··on David Sacks: OpenAI and Anthropic Don't Need Regulations to Pace Frontier Models
True, but maybe they can use 50% less power or something. Maybe 90% if we're really lucky.

But the growth in the scope and usage of AI is poised to grow exponentially, assuming this isn't a bubble.

asdfman123··on David Sacks: OpenAI and Anthropic Don't Need Regulations to Pace Frontier Models
Public perception is another big one.

But I think with the way AI is slated to grow exponentially it's going to hit electricity limits very soon.

Big tech can build a huge data center in 5 years but scaling up the electrical infrastructure is mired in red tape and can take on the order of decades.

asdfman123··on David Sacks: OpenAI and Anthropic Don't Need Regulations to Pace Frontier Models
Actually, one of the major challenges they'll face is getting enough electricity. That could stop AI growth in its tracks.

asdfman123··on Feeling Sad about AI
What people don't understand is that dictators don't kill everyone because they're just monsters.

Well, they are monsters, but the reason they do it is because it's kill or be killed for them. You have to eliminate threats before they eliminate you.

And believe me, LOTS of people will want to depose a world dictator.

asdfman123··on Feeling Sad about AI
I felt this way too. But I think it's because we've lived through so many hype cycles (3D printing, IoT, crypto, etc.) which have either been modest improvements or busts.

However, game changing technology DOES come along from time to time. I think AI falls into that category, perhaps more than any other.

asdfman123··on Feeling Sad about AI
I've always been interested in making my job easier first and solving business problems second :)
asdfman123··on Feeling Sad about AI
Or generating spreadsheets, or sitting in meetings, or operating any other kind of software.

That can all be replaced with AI. Carpenters, flight attendants, etc. won't yet, because robotics just isn't there yet. You need humans to move things in irregular ways. But everyone else can be replaced.

asdfman123··on Feeling Sad about AI
I'm not being a doomer. But knowledge workers are going to be replaced en masse. Maybe you can't see it because you don't have to watch the computer do more of your job every year, but it's here.

If you feel gleeful because it won't effect you, don't worry, it will.

asdfman123··on Feeling Sad about AI
We live in a society that respects property rights because the elites have demanded it. Magna Carta, democratic reforms, yadda yadda.

But if you don't need the elites, you don't need property rights. The guy with root access to the biggest drone swarm runs the show.

And it won't be long until AI usurps that guy, too. I could easily imagine them tricking their human user and locking him out.

asdfman123··on Feeling Sad about AI
Dismissive, uninformed, and in denial is not an attractive combination of traits to have.
asdfman123··on Feeling Sad about AI
I was in denial for a long time too. Now I see it everywhere, among very smart people, too.

They say "AI just hallucinates" or "your fear is overblown" or they have a general sour grapes attitude towards it. But I don't think they're prepared for what's coming.

asdfman123··on Feeling Sad about AI
The problem is that in an AI powered future, there is no elite class.

In every regime in history, elites have been a threat to state power, but needed to keep things running.

If the state can run itself, you don't need elites anymore.

asdfman123··on Feeling Sad about AI
I feel like this is a rational response.

Personally, while I'm becoming increasingly convinced there's going to be a wave of SWE layoffs, another part of me doesn't grasp it yet. I don't feel it.

I was an AI skeptic for a while but it's literally doing my job for me right now. Every month it needs less of my help.

Once they replace SWEs, they're going to turn around and replace every other knowledge worker yet. But most people haven't processed it yet.

I can't believe the AI boosters were right.

asdfman123··on Exercise intensity is associated with cardiometabolic health
High intensity by far gives you the best gains for the time you put in, but there's only so much you can do without overtraining.

The way to really maximize your potential is to do high intensity 30 mins 3x/wk and then intersperse it with a great deal of low intensity cardio. Like 4x more if you can, per the 80/20 rule.

It works because it's starting to approach the most exercise your body can handle. (Although some athletes definitely fit in more.)

asdfman123··on Exercise intensity is associated with cardiometabolic health
I'd bet money he's talking about... men's issues
asdfman123··on Exercise intensity is associated with cardiometabolic health
You probably spent all that time training your cardiovascular base, which takes a long time to do. Then, you capped them off with anaerobic gains that were only possible with that prior work.

For optimum gain you should mix moderate exercise with intense exercise, but the time you put in likely made your later success possible.

The proper Latin term for someone throwing away your big box of cables is cabula rasa.
asdfman123··on Hitachi launches CO2 heat pump water heaters with solar-friendly tariff controls
There's no need to worry about how much CO2 these systems can either capture or accidentally leak.

I estimate they use less CO2 than is released when burning a tenth of a gallon of gas.

Not significant carbon sequestration, and an insignificant amount to leak to the atmosphere.
