asciimov··on I built a programming language using Claude Code
This takes all the satisfaction out of spending a few well thought out weekends to build your own language. So many fun options: compiled or interpreted; virtual machine, or not; single pass, double pass, or (Leeloo Dallas) Multipass? No cool BNF grammars to show off either…

It’s missing all the heart, the soul, of deciding and trading off options to get something to work just for you. It’s like you bought a rat bike from your local junkyard and are trying to pass it off as your own handmade cafe racer.

asciimov··on My journey to the microwave alternate timeline
My solution was to half the requested liquid for a thick oatmeal. Ok, thick is underselling it, it’ll be quite dense. Add cinnamon and chopped dates.
asciimov··on iOS 27 'Rave' Update to Clean Up Code, Could Boost Battery Life
I just don't think to proof my texts. Usually it's type, send, and realize autocorrect makes me sound like a ~balloon~ buffoon.
asciimov··on iOS 27 'Rave' Update to Clean Up Code, Could Boost Battery Life
"in" to "inn" is just one of the numerous words it LOVES to replace for me. (But it is one of the most common)

Just this afternoon it also replaced "for" with "fire", and it loves censoring me with "ducking".

One time it got me into hot water when it corrected "tacos" to "Travis". "I picked up Travis on the way home" isn't the message your wife wants to see after being dropped off at the airport.

Just my iPhone 13 mini does this my iPad isn't as bad. It has persisted between iOS updates and has been an ongoing issue for a few years.

asciimov··on iOS 27 'Rave' Update to Clean Up Code, Could Boost Battery Life
That could is doing a lot of heavy lifting.

If they can't get my keyboard to stop replacing in with inn I don't think they are going to magically fix the battery life hit that comes with every ios update.

asciimov··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (February 2026)
This month is dropping network cable to the home offices and then adding recessed lighting in the living room, pantry, and coat closet.

Next month prep starts for finding dev work after an extended hiatus.

asciimov··on Xfwl4 – The Roadmap for a Xfce Wayland Compositor
I’ll switch to Wayland as soon as I can use xscreensaver with it, preferably as the screen locker.
asciimov··on Weight loss jabs: What happens when you stop taking them
> "The environment that people live in needs to be one that promotes health, not weight gain. […] Obesity is not a GLP-1 deficiency," he says.

This is my biggest issue with weight healthcare, the idea that if only the patient would eat correctly they wouldn’t be overweight. It’s not some moral failing a person often over eats, it very well could be some physiological issue that should be treated. It would be like telling someone with asthma that they just need to get into better shape to breathe better.

asciimov··on Ford kills the All-Electric F-150
Maybe for city truck drivers.

For those that don't drive in town, noting beats gas or diesel.

Companies need to build a stepping stone truck. Dino-powered generator on an electric platform. Get most of the upside to electric performance, while getting the speed gas refilling.

asciimov··on Carrier Landing in Top Gun for the NES
The secret is to only move up and down when trying to dock.
asciimov··on Carrier Landing in Top Gun for the NES
I rented the vast majority of NES games I played back in the day, getting a manual was uncommon, sometimes they came with a xeroxed copy.

For me, half the fun was trying to figure out how to play the game.

asciimov··on Paramount launches hostile bid for Warner Bros
Ellison wants WBD for the TV networks, including CNN.

I don’t think they want the film division but the vast number of cable channels that Discovery owns. Giving them a rather large control of the American mind share.

asciimov··on Why 90s Movies Feel More Alive Than Anything on Netflix
If you think the stories in 90's movies are good, you need spend some time with classic era movies (pre-1970).

When you have to let the writing carry the story, the movie works much better.

asciimov··on From blood sugar to brain relief: GLP-1 therapy slashes migraine frequency
Get your magnesium level checked. Those that suffer from chronic migraines often are deficient in magnesium and will see a significant reduction in events after 4-6 weeks on a daily Magnesium supplement.
asciimov··on Ford can't find mechanics for $120K: It takes math to learn a trade
Ford needs to step up, if it can’t find mechanics.

Pay is too low for entry level people, at maybe $14 an hour. That’s before the Snap-on Truck comes by and saddles that tech with $40k of debt.

Give entry level workers a living wage, and give them tools to use (and keep after investing 3 years in the business). Have an actual pipeline for certification and training and remove the gate keeping of many dealers that prevent good techs from becoming better mechanics. Do better at engineering vehicles so they are easier to work on.

As this CEO knows, doing the right thing is harder than complaining.

asciimov··on Ask HN: Where to begin with "modern" Emacs?
Are you looking for an ide experience or just a text editor with some options?

If a full IDE is what you are seeking go with DOOM. It will give you a fully put together experience.

If you just want a text editor that you want to slowly add to go vanilla.

Doom is like getting a fully furnished apartment where you can choose the furniture and curtain colors. Vanilla is an empty plot of land that you need to build a foundation, house, and connect to city services all on your own.

asciimov··on Betty Crocker broke recipes by shrinking boxes
I’m really surprised at the numerous comments here admonishing the use of box mix. For most Americans, we don’t do enough baking to warrant having flour and leaveners on hand. It’s just cheaper and more efficient to buy the box mix under $2 and use it when you need it. Besides, the end result for the average person is going to be better than anything they try to scratch make.
asciimov··on Betty Crocker broke recipes by shrinking boxes
For Judith it’s about the nostalgia of being a girl and having her mother make these cookies with this method. Judith’s mom was likely over-worked and buying a box was a timesaver. Who cares if it’s not “properly” made?
asciimov··on AI is different
Not sure the last time you went on reddit, but I wouldn't be surprised if around 20% of posts and comments there are LLM generated.
asciimov··on Live coding interviews measure stress, not coding skills
That’s both easy to game and will filter out candidates that don’t have work to show.
asciimov··on Compression culture is making you stupid and uninteresting
Our world is burdened with SEO filler, AI slop, writers who shouldn't or worse can't, the summary is all you have to see if something is worth going further than the title.

tl;dr- Write better, stop abusing the privilege of our time.

asciimov··on Compression culture is making you stupid and uninteresting
> on the other, hours long podcasts, Netflix documentaries, and one-person YouTube videos on esoteric subjects are all quite popular. There's no lack of demand for longform content, but it's mostly not writing.

Those are all things that people can put on while doing something else or in the evening when they want to relax. Edutainment used to be the word, but now days it's just flat out entertainment.

asciimov··on Orwell Diaries 1938-1942
And why I still use paper. Hard drives die, and I don't expect any one to be going through them when I'm gone.

Paper on the other hand they at least will pick it up to throw away, likely flipping through it just to look for anything of monetary value.

asciimov··on Measuring the impact of AI on experienced open-source developer productivity
I'll be curious of the long term impacts of AI.

Such as: do you end up spending more time to find and fix issues, does AI use reduce institutional knowledge, will you be more inclined to start projects over from scratch.

asciimov··on Trying to find meaning in owning an old Mac
My family had a '79 Thunderbird that was our main driver from 91-97. I haven't seen any of them on the road in over a decade. I have several memories of that car.

- The water pump going out, as we drove up a mountain, and rolling back down into the drive way of a converted apple barn. Where we found a nice cleaning lady who took my dad the 20 miles into town to get a new water pump, which he replaced in that driveway and got us back on the road.

- The rear diff throwing a bearing well after midnight in the middle of nowhere west Texas. The car limped a few miles down the road to a surprisingly still open gas station. My uncle, a mechanic, happened to have the necessary parts to fix it on him. So when he picked my dad up an hour later, they went ahead and spent the rest of the overnight hours replacing it in the parking lot of that middle of nowhere gas station.

- Spending several days at various salvage yards looking for rear tail lights. They are just the right height to be taken out by shopping carts. Unfortunately the 79 is the only year that didn't have a connecting strip that goes between the left and right hand sides. In the 90's they were very hard to find, I can't imagine they are any easier today. Seriously, buy an extra set even if you don't need them.

If you ever want a to move to a modern V8, Ford's panther platform from '02-'11 are just as big, roomy, and easy to work on as that Thunderbird. Plus you'll get modern conveniences like anti-lock breaks, air-bags, and good part availability.

asciimov··on Mini NASes marry NVMe to Intel's efficient chip
I agree, if your linked pc wasn't from aliexpress it would be a compelling alternative. Not that these n100 mini-pcs are any better, but I can get one tomorrow off amazon for under $150.

I do think they bridge the server gap between using a rpi and a full server. Likely for the hobbyist that doesn't yet have the need (or space) for better hardware.

asciimov··on Mini NASes marry NVMe to Intel's efficient chip
There are nvme to sata adaptors. It’s a little janky with these as you’ll need to leave a cover off to have access to the ports.
asciimov··on Mini NASes marry NVMe to Intel's efficient chip
The selling point for the people in the Plex community is the N100/N150 include Intel’s Quicksync which gives you video hardware transcoding without a dedicated video card. It’ll handle 3 to 4 4K transcoded streams.

There are several sub $150 units that allow you to upgrade the ram, limited to one 32gb stick max. You can use an nvme to sata adapter to add plenty of spinning rust or connect it to a das.

While I wouldn’t throw any vms on these, you have enough headroom for non-ai home sever apps.
