aschobel··on A Year with MongoDB
We love MongoDB at Catch, it's been our primary backing store for all user data for over 20 months now.

  > Catch.com
  > Data Size: 50GB
  > Total Documents 27,000,000
  > Operations per second: 450 (Create, reads, updates, etc.)
  > Lock % average 0%
  > CPU load average 0%
Global Lock isn't ideal, but Mongo is so fast it hasn't been an issue for us. You need to keep on slow queries and design your schema and indexes correctly.

We don't want page faults on indexes, we design them to keep them in memory.

I don't get the safety issue, 20 months and we haven't lost any user data. shrug

aschobel··on Lunch, disrupted: ZeroCater helps startups get fed
Time vs Money

Not worrying about what to get the team for lunch is a huge time saver.

It gives us more time to spend on users.

Disclaimer, we use ZeroCater twice a week and absolutely love them.

aschobel··on Show HN: Streak.com - Do sales, support and bug tracking all inside Gmail
I realize it's a Google domain, but not a trusted Google domain.

If you look at do a search for "googleusercontent.com" it shows that it hosted malware and some other nasty stuff.

If I'm on streak.com and try to login I would like to be authorizing Streak.com
aschobel··on Show HN: Streak.com - Do sales, support and bug tracking all inside Gmail
Login screen is showing an odd domain name, apps.googleuserscontent.com, is requesting authorization to my account.

The site XXXXX.apps.googleusercontent.com is requesting access to your Google Account for the product(s) listed below
aschobel··on Remove Google Search History Before New Privacy Policy Takes Effect
Thanks, it's only exporting 922 searches for me.

Increasing the num=100000 argument doesn't seem to impact this limit.

One would think that your search history should be a core part of their data liberation effort.

aschobel··on Remove Google Search History Before New Privacy Policy Takes Effect
Is there a way to export the search history?

I have close to 45k searches over 7 years, would love to keep that data and mine it myself.

aschobel··on Tim Berners-Lee Confirms The Exact Location Where the Web Was Invented: France
CERN's phone # has a Swiss prefix,

  +41 22 76 761 11
their physical address and entrance are in Switzerland,

  CERN CH-1211
  Genève 23
  Switzerland

and their website is a .ch

  http://cern.ch/
but the web was invented in France since one building was in France?

As a Swiss citizen I'm not buying it!

Possibly Google Closure

If you look at the JS there are comments from Google Closure's testing framework.

aschobel··on Report on Air France 447 crash deepens mystery
> When he came they all continued doing random things indicating none of the three had any flight training that they remembered.

Power + Attitude = Performance. Every PPL knows this, as did the three AF pilots that night. They deserve more credit.

We know the pilots received an audible stall warning the moment PFD's and STBY ASI failed and the A/P & A/T disengaged. That was a false stall warning, moments later they received another real stall warning.

They were flying at night entering turbulence with unreliable and conflicting data with flight control laws that went from Normal Law to Direct Law. The ASI is showing 25+ knots over the max limit while at the same time stall warning is going off. The plane is in direct law mode so any side-stick input could rip it appart.

I'm going to wait until more data is released before making a conclusion, there are too many whys.

aschobel··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (May 2011)
$12k referral bonus seems a bit rich. Is that the norm for Seattle?

I'm seeing around $5-10k referral bonus at other Bay Area startups. Talent is also insanely constrained around here.

aschobel··on Show/Ask HN: My side project for over a year; should I take it on full time?
Depends on the app, but for us one mobile app is more than enough to keep one of our folks busy full time. It takes a heck of a lot of work and dedication to make a solid app.

I really wish we had a few more folks hacking on Android! cough we're hiring cough :P

aschobel··on Show/Ask HN: My side project for over a year; should I take it on full time?
shrug I haven't seen any online page to send betas and such.

Meet a few of the dev advocates at IO, SXSW, and a bunch of the Android events around SF.

aschobel··on Show/Ask HN: My side project for over a year; should I take it on full time?
Seems to be back to normal, using Chrome 9.0.597.107
aschobel··on Show/Ask HN: My side project for over a year; should I take it on full time?
You need to contact them and they have a team decide if they will feature you.

They look at how closely you follow the Android HIG, level of polish in the app, have you been recently featured, etc.

We also send them beta version of our apps and they give us great feedback.

aschobel··on Show/Ask HN: My side project for over a year; should I take it on full time?
Kinda, we are trying to make it easier to capture what matters (things, people, places) and be able to pivot on that data. Productivity is a nice onramp for that.

Folks have been asking for ToDo functionality for a while now, I want to keep the productivity features to an absolute minimum.

aschobel··on Show/Ask HN: My side project for over a year; should I take it on full time?
Very slick app, but discovery on Android can be tough.

Shoot me an email, aschobel (at) catch.com and I can put you in touch with our Google Developer advocates, you definitely want to get featured.

What are you thinking of using for online sync/backup? RTM? Google lets you backup blobs using BackupManager, might be worth looking into.

Good luck!

aschobel··on Engineers Recruit Engineers With Hackruiter (YC S10)
Thanks!

MongoDB and Python coolness, mixed with some Google Closure. =)

aschobel··on Engineers Recruit Engineers With Hackruiter (YC S10)
Then the question is where can you make more of an impact?

FB has two orders of magnitude more users than us, but also two orders of magnitude more engineers.

I'd rather be engineer number 11 with us, than number 1001 at FB.
