arwineap··on My Windows Computer Just Doesn't Feel Like Mine Anymore
While those configs are different in syntax, each is meant to be read, edited and backed up by a human. All of the system config files are in /etc

Registry hacking, with all it's resets and duplicate keys is hard to backup, constantly reverts ( because m$ doesn't believe it to be user editable) and is a pain in the ass to back up and restore.

Oh yes, and is your registry value supposed to be a dword, or something else? No way to tell.

arwineap··on The History of DR DOS
It was only when you needed cups and wifi support that you really needed to work at it.

Sure graphics had two drivers to choose from and you had to craft your X11 config by hand but that taught character and perseverance

arwineap··on The History of DR DOS
We knew this was a problem which spawned lindows in the early 2000s (now known as linspire). I was lucky enough to see some stores carry desktops with it preloaded.

Didn't seem to sell very well though

arwineap··on Why you shouldn't parse the output of ls(1)
I don't place newlines in my filenames, but I also prefer my shell scripts to be portable.

Learning and understanding the bash oddities is key for me because I use it so often. It's the same reason I quote every expansion; sure my text likely doesn't have spaces, but maybe it does and id rather use the extra quote characters to ensure I don't have to troubleshoot language grammar bugs in my code

arwineap··on AM radio law opposed by tech and auto industries is close to passing
Here's a chart that illustrates skywave bounce

    2 MHz 200-400 miles
    4 MHz 400-600 miles
    6 MHz 600-1,200 miles
    8 MHz 800-1,600 miles
    12 MHz 1,200-2,400 miles
    16 MHz 1,600-3,200 miles
    22 MHz 2,200-4,000 miles plus
26 MHz unpredictable during our solar cycle minimum
arwineap··on AM radio law opposed by tech and auto industries is close to passing
I think that ssb is great but it targets bands of radius around you

I'm not sure AM has the same issues

arwineap··on Show HN: OpenLIT – Open-Source LLM Observability with OpenTelemetry
On the span is an interesting attribute to view, but had you considered using otel meters/metrics for that instead?

I think cardinality in span attributes can be a problem, and meters are better for aggregating and graphing

arwineap··on Gitlab Duo
Given that it's public, yes, gitlab as well as every other model on earth will be trained from it.

Is it right? I don't know. Can we stop it? Absolutely not.

Honestly, I find it comforting that gitlab is at least being straightforward about it

arwineap··on Shape typing in Python
> I want to be able to say “this function argument is a dictionary that has at least the keys a, b, and c.” It gives the contract that the function only accesses those keys, and others will be ignored.

Do we agree that this is the behavior of regular dicts in python? How should TypedDicts be different?

Surely, the goal of typing in python should not be to match behavior without

arwineap··on 'We're the last bastion of rental': video stores resisting rise of streaming
Wikipedia is different, you can always check and discuss the edits.

I think your point still stands, just taking some heat off of wikis

arwineap··on Shape typing in Python
I'm not sure I understand.

TypedDicts are disappointing because you can't partially define a type? That seems like a success

In go you would need to define all fields in your struct and if you needed unstructured data you would have to define a map, which even then is partially typed

How should extra keys behave in "typed python?"

arwineap··on 350 tons of of chocolate and wine arrive on world’s largest cargo sailboat
Just to be clear, this is a typical sail cargo route because of the prevailing / trade winds
arwineap··on Show HN: My $1k self-install, off-grid solar backup build for renters
You're being delusional. Maybe reconsider
arwineap··on Bay Area workers charged for building secret apartments inside train stations
What would you charge them with?
arwineap··on Show HN: Rotary Phone Project
This messes with the rotary tone timing, so you'd also have to convert it to generate the modern tones; and now you're getting really close to re-inventing push button phone :)
arwineap··on Don’t Eat Before Reading This (1999)
Can we just agree that indian food is tasty and every region contributes?

Yes, it's diverse, yes there are some dishes that are overshadowed; but that doesn't make it less interesting, or worse less indian.

arwineap··on Japan to introduce six-month residency visa for 'digital nomads'
Has anyone done the digital nomad thing with children?

It'd be great if childcare/schooling was easier overseas, maybe even an opportunity for kids to get an early mind opening experience

arwineap··on Gitar: From the Team Behind Uber's Developer Platform
I really enjoy much of Ubers tooling.

TFA seems to explain the problems they are trying to solve but not the solutions. Currently these problems seem well solved by the intellij line of products with [insert favorite linter here].

Maybe I'm missing something

arwineap··on Prefer table driven tests (2019)
Test how it makes sense for your use case. Table driven tests are fine, and I use them for cases that call for it.
arwineap··on John Deere Announces Strategic Partnership with SpaceX
Yes, I feel that the commenter suggesting they are "not like a car" is mistaken. I grew up in an AG community but my family was not doing crops so I don't have first hand knowledge

They are mostly a utility truck used quite often, and 2-3 times a year they hook up the expensive add-ons to do the big work

arwineap··on John Deere Announces Strategic Partnership with SpaceX
What does this have to do with TaaS, or right to repair?

Just because it has tons of sensors doesn't mean they shouldn't be replacable

arwineap··on U.S. army drops requirement for high school diploma (2022)
The issue with optional vaccinations wasn't the poke, it was pulling soldiers or entire ships from the field. Those resources were there for a reason and either needed to be replaced or weakened our posture.

With COVID under control, and 96% of soldiers vaccinated there is no longer a need to make it mandatory.

This is what we want right? Policy based on evaluated risks and threats?

arwineap··on Three US troops killed in drone attack in Jordan, more than 30 injured
Hrm, seems loosely enforced, we often see politics, news, etc being discussed

I guess theres probably also a factor of how much participation is in the thread

arwineap··on Harvesting electricity from high-voltage transmission lines using fences
Would that be the case if the power lines were properly isolated?
arwineap··on Harvesting electricity from high-voltage transmission lines using fences
Would this still be the case if the power lines were properly isolated?

It feels a lot like spillage to me, antenna or not, but I admit my emf is weak

arwineap··on Three US troops killed in drone attack in Jordan, more than 30 injured
Why was this post flagged?
arwineap··on Harvesting electricity from high-voltage transmission lines using fences
What would the fan be in this case?

I'm feeling like the initial analogy fit the premise better.

arwineap··on U.S. army drops requirement for high school diploma (2022)
You obviously have no idea how many shots are mandatory for recruits deploying

It would be a significant strain on their logistics, which the us military is very good at, to let these shots be optional

It's mission oriented, not politics.

arwineap··on ICJ orders Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza, stops short of ordering ceasefire
