arusahni··on Elastic 7.9
I really dislike that they make no distinction about what is and isn't an X-Pack feature in those release notes:

"Data Streams sounds cool! It could help alleviate some of the management overhead that I was accomplishing with ingest pipelines."

clicks into the docs

`X-Pack only`

I get that it's complementary to their ILM functionality, which, too, is an X-Pack feature, but still, clarity would be helpful.

arusahni··on Laying the foundation for Rust’s future
Based on an inartful Googling, here are some additional ones:

* Perl [3]

I'm sure there are more.

arusahni··on Show HN: git-req – A Git extension that checks out GitHub and Gitlab PRs by ID
Hi HN!

I've been working on this off and on for a few years. With the advent of service-specific CLI clients, I wanted to provide something service-agnostic that fulfilled a specific use case that annoyed me.

Feedback and PRs welcome! This was my first nontrivial Rust project (the original version was a shell script with some Python).

arusahni··on Introducing Instagram Reels
I'm hoping, as they push more to support creation, they address their compression/encoding on Android devices.

On my Pixel, the only way I can get high-quality videos in my stories is by recording using the Camera app, and then sharing to Instagram. If I add any text/sticker/overlay, the final video has obvious artifacting.

arusahni··on Django 3.1
Perhaps django-reactor would be of interest to you? [1] It's targeting LiveView-like functionality for Django. I haven't used it (so I can't vouch for the claim).

arusahni··on Kongregate closed to new games, shutting down forums and chat
The community was great - I still talk to some of the folks from the chat rooms I used to mod. I loved the dev community that sprung up around the site, too, with useful userscripts and assistant apps.

End of an era. Thanks for all the memories, Kongregate.

arusahni··on PEP 622 – Structural Pattern Matching
What's interesting here is this is gated on the new parser from PEP-617 [1]. Based on mailing list discussions [2], and the PEP, the use of `match` will be context-sensitive, so it shouldn't be as disruptive of an introduction as `async`.

This is part of the circle of life for internal Facebook turmoil:

arusahni··on Google inserts links to its Duo video chat app when users text about Zoom
Duo maintains a contacts list. It doesn't seem too big of a leap to assume Messages queries Duo to see if both parties have the app installed. Or, as others have suggested, it may take them to an app installation page on either the Play Store or App Store.

arusahni··on Behind Amazon’s HQ2 fiasco
> Are there affordable housing, transportation, and public safety issues we have to address? Of course. Will we benefit from addressing these problems to add 25,000-35,000 jobs?

As an Arlingtoninian, I remain skeptical that a response of the appropriate magnitude will occur in the region. Those who aren't fortunate enough to have a well-paying job will be forced further outside of the beltway, further worsening their commutes. Affordable apartment buildings will continue to be overhauled and become "luxury", demanding an extra $300+ in rent a month. Well-maintained medium small businesses that were barely breaking even will be forced to shutter as banks and upscale gyms take their spots. This has happened in the region, and will only accelerate with HQ2.

> loss of tax revenues, reduced property values, list employment, or low quality jobs

AFAIK, Arlington was turning around their office vacancy rate before HQ2. Admittedly, it was more focused on the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor, but still...

In strongly typed languages, there are serialization/deserialization libraries that don't require you to type the entire JSON object - just the fields you care about.

arusahni··on Google, Xiaomi, and Huawei affected by zero-day flaw that unlocks root access
After the recent disclosures about Apple vulnerabilities, I've seen a lot of (unwarranted, in my opinion) criticism from HN of Project Zero, specifically the accusation of non-Google bias. For those who hold this position, does this affect your stance?
