arunc··on Ask HN: Is there a book that teaches you dark patterns of office politics?
1. Awareness 2. To consciously not do that ourselves

Dark politics affects our characters and peace of mind in the long run.

It is a common misunderstanding that all C programs are fast by default. In reality that's not the case. It takes hell a lot of time and resource to get that right. C programs just compile blazing fast. D compiles even faster.

Also, IMPO, GNOME is crap and GNOME != sway.

arunc··on Ask HN: How to learn advanced C++ (atomics, memory ordering, etc.)
I usually refer to LLVM documentation. You can look at this [1] to begin with.

For sample code, etc, I would recommend to read D's atomic primitive implementations [2] instead of C++. C++ standard library is an unreadable monster. Fundamentally C++ atomic types are a flaw as std::atomic<int> is a type by itself, whereas in reality the operations has to be atomic. Also you can't get the value type for the type underneath the std::atomic template.

Whereas in D, the operations are atomic and you can operate them on the primitive types. You can see numerous examples in D's standard library implementation (which is readable than C++'s) [3][4]

arunc··on The ABC’s of Templates in D
Good article, but this is very basic and probably targeted towards new programmers coming from the other languages (not c++).

Using templates in D is very intuitive and is a nice experience when we come from C++ land. We get to use . (dot) operator for everything and that's a real win.

arunc··on A Pattern for Head-mutable Structures in D
The author is an expert D programmer and the post is too deep for beginners and average users of D to understand. Here are the words from the OP from Reddit. Ideally this should've been the first one/two paragraphs of this post.

https://www.reddit.com/r/programming/comments/hfkq5e/a_patte...

A common complaint about D's const is its transitivity makes it hard to use, and the blog post attempts to improve this situation by giving user-defined types the same power that built-in types have. Currently, the way to work around the issue is to simply not use const and instead rely on convention. Essentially, you'll write the same code in both cases, but currently the compiler gives you no help. I want the compiler to enforce these things, and I believe almost every D project could benefit from this.

arunc··on Teaching my MIT classes with only free/libre software
> Sussman is not just "a professor at MIT."

Your comment could be taken out of context here. I am no language expert, but it's better to use the form "Sussman is not only a professor at MIT, but also ...".

"just" is probably overused these days. It has replaced words like "please" and structures like above.

Contrast:

a) Can you just do that

b) Can you please get that

arunc··on Hunt: A high-level D Programming Language Web framework
Not sure why you are getting downvoted here. Your question is very valid.

As far as the Techempower results go, I'm pretty sure it is not a GC issue. It could be the postgres implementation issue. Someone has to work with upstream to tune and fix the issues.

Contributing to such benchmarks require time and effort. A small community can do only so much in their free time.

Even though such benchmarks are good marketing, the D community is not interested in participating such benchmarks (although I'm quoting one post from the D forum, the trend is same).

arunc··on Better C – A subset of D Programming Language
OP's point was about auto being littered in documentation and not in the code itself.

Having auto is a boon for certain design aspects. As system level programming language D offers everything in betterC mode. Of course it can offer more. But a small community can do only so much.

Use dmd master and you will have printf/scanf format argument validation [0].

arunc··on Better C – A subset of D Programming Language
For me the single best feature that stands out in D is the uniform member access using dot.

- Want to access member in a aggregate (class/struct)? Use .

- Want to access member in pointer to an aggregate? Use .

- Want to access member in a module? Use .

- Want to access reference (not free standing)? Use .

This makes switching between different implementations pretty easy. Coupled with UFCS, this is pretty fantastic!

Vim vs emacs, auto inference vs explicit, I don't think it will ever end. :)
arunc··on Better C – A subset of D Programming Language
Why so?
arunc··on Better C – A subset of D Programming Language
Hi Walter, I have two questions:

1. Why do functions need to be annotated with @safe and nothrow in betterC? Why not make them default? I understand making it default for non-betterC might break some code.

2. string type was uniform and awesome until it was treated as Unicode. Any plans to fix this and remove auto decoding? That would be awesome.

Edit: three questions to two. I had another question about using threads in betterC. But looks like we can't use D threads as they are runtime dependent.
