arunc··on Sustainability with Rust
It looks like the research paper indicated in the article isn't fair. D probably fits in the top 5 languages on performance and efficiency, but it's not even in the list of languages studied.
arunc··on ISO C became unusable for operating systems development
> After reading the paper, I'm inclined to change the definition of UB in D to not mean it can be assumed to not happen and not be unintended.

What's the current definition of UB in D?

arunc··on How to Break a Phone Addiction
I'm an Android user. I break my phone addiction by using an iPhone. Seriously, it works! I find it very inconvenient to use an iPhone to the extent that I use it less often and eventually get out of the addiction.

arunc··on System CPU Usage and Glibc
FWIW, `MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS|MAP_POPULATE` would've done the same job.
arunc··on Zellij – a friendlier tmux or screen in rust
How does that matter to a terminal multiplexer?
arunc··on M1racles: An Apple M1 covert channel vulnerability
Not to miss his YouTube channel where he does live hacking sessions. Invaluable for beginners.

arunc··on Linux and Glibc API Changes
glibc breaks ABI quite often. Linus has roasted about it openly in the past https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pzl1B7nB9Kc

Notable quote from that: If there's a bug that people rely on, it's not a bug, it's a feature.

arunc··on Back in 1993, I was taking a number theory class
HN community is awesome. But the comment thread web UI is a big duh! I'm not comparing it with Twitter as I haven't used it much. I can't use HN without Materialistic so on Android. It's so much easier to collapse and expand comments on mobile than having to click on a small + sign.

FWIW, I'm from 1990 as well and I prefer to read plain websites with no JS/CSS. But the HN comment threading interface could use some love.

arunc··on Beginner’s guide to mechanical keyboards
> Mechanical keyboards are ideal for programmers and fast typists

Don't fall for this hype. I've used mechanical keyboards for over 20 years and switched to non-mechanical 6 years ago. My typing has been never fast. You don't have to push/raise your fingers all the way down/up when you hit the key or when you release the the key respectively. That adds to the latency as well. The flatter the keyboard the faster it is - of course coupled with the actual mechanics of the keyboard. But mechanical keyboard? Not anymore for me!

arunc··on Chicago undergraduate mathematics bibliography (1999)
Very simple in design, neat, to the point. Does anyone know if there's a Jekyll template that generates such a neat/nostalgic output?
arunc··on Show HN: Simple way to access various statistics in Git repository
Collecting git statistics is fun and not easy. I miss the equivalent of `hg chrun`.
arunc··on Himalaya, the CLI email client: v0.2.7 released
It would be interesting to see how this fares when using it for Linux kernel emails. The sheer volume and frequency would put this to a good test for a power user.
arunc··on Genetically Modified Mosquitoes Breeding in Brazil, Despite Biotech Assurances
Hope this doesn't turn into another human made disaster.
arunc··on Zellij – A Terminal Workspace and Multiplexer
ctrl-w is a very commonly used key to control vim windows. How do you manage with that? I have my tmux leader key mapped to ctrl-z as we hardly use it these days.
arunc··on What is the hardest language in the world to lip-read? (2020)
Just a personal opinion, but it must be French.

arunc··on Gallup: U.S. church membership dips below 50% for first time
Just curious, would this slow down the rate of conversion to Christianity around the globe (India, Africa, etc)?
arunc··on One Commander – a new Windows 10 file browser
I've settled on DoubleCmd [1] for over 3 years now. Open source and cross platform and even snapshot builds [2] are pretty stable. Double click to navigate to parent folder, etc. Highly recommend for power users.

arunc··on A “Better C” Benchmark
Wondering why D was not considered. D is probably the better C I've come across.
arunc··on RIP Google Reader
Well said. Coincidentally I was talking about GR to my wife and kid last night. It is a sad death indeed.

I look at it the other way. The recruiters may not be inclusive by default. By explicitly informing the recruiters to be inclusive we remove the bias they have as well.
arunc··on Magic Mushrooms Are Decriminalized in DC as of Today
Looks like nothing can make you feel better at this stage if you can't infer that the intention was to help.
arunc··on GitHub, fuck your name change
Lots of good points made in this. We have eradicated the usage of the exclusive terms in our team not recently but well before 2014. It's a cultural change to be precise. We are very conscious of the biases that could arise. In fact, during hiring we specifically ask the recruiters to look for diverse pool of engineers.

Still I concur with the OP's statement that the percentage of African American in the tech industry is marginal (in the US, not sure elsewhere). I don't know what we can do about this. But we have to change as a society and as individuals.

arunc··on How C++ Resolves a Function Call
Unrelated to C++, but the diagrams (svg) looks nice. Are these created from text format or via some diagram tool, because if it is from text, it's nice to use in architecture diagram (asciidoc/markdown), etc and version control with git.

PlantUML works well for sequence diagrams, but for the rest, the output is not pleasing to look at.

arunc··on Magic Mushrooms Are Decriminalized in DC as of Today
Since you mentioned anti-depressants, I would recommend listening to this podcast by Dr. Caroline Leaf: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zX4DeCV31YY

Hope this helps someone.

arunc··on Ask HN: Is there a book that teaches you dark patterns of office politics?
For what it's worth, I would recommend 48 laws of power by Robert Greene. I would go to the extent and say that all his books are fantastic reads.
