arunabha··on U.S. senators introduce new pirate site blocking bill, "Block BEARD"
> The site-blocking proposal seeks to amend U.S. copyright law, enabling rightsholders to request federal courts to designate online locations as a “foreign digital piracy site”. If that succeeds, courts can subsequently order U.S. service providers to block access to these sites.

Of course, because what we need is the govt deciding which sites can be banned. I'm hoping this dies in committee, however for Bay Area folks, Rep Zoe Lofgren is the house sponsor for the companion bill and Adam Schiff is the Senate co sponsor. They can be reached at

https://lofgren.house.gov/contact/offices and https://www.schiff.senate.gov/contact/

If you oppose this bill, take 5 min and let your congressperson know. They might seem to be bought and paid for by lobbyists, but they care deeply about being reelected and even a small number of constituents showing up can be effective. In order of impact personal visit > letter > call > email. The higher effort channels(visit, letter) tend to get treated more seriously. Emails are largely ignored unless they are absolutely deluged.

arunabha··on US revokes visas of Brazilian judges after crack down on ex-president Bolsonaro
> Brazil is a dictatorship of the judiciary. Maybe it's not a "brutal" dictatorship but it is a dictatorship.

Do you have anything to back that claim up beyond your usual 'I read the Brazilian constitution'?

Yes, you may have read the constitution and you might even be very smart, however what you don't comprehend is that law is not code, nor is it everyday English in spite of laws being written in English. Interpreting the law requires training, experience and context. There is a reason why law is a separate field of study and there are licensing requirements.

If you're still convinced of your legal smarts, try volunteering at a legal aid clinic based on your reading of the constitution and the Brazilian criminal code. It will very quickly teach you just how little you actually know in this area.

arunabha··on ‘I witnessed war crimes’ in Gaza – former worker at GHF aid site [video]
Understood. My point was that the current state is entirely of Israel's choosing. At this point, there is no functional Hamas resistance left in Gaza. There is no need to starve people by restricting aid and then gunning down desperate civilians when they try to get the meager food aid that trickles in.

Israel has lost all moral superiority at this point and probably alienated an entire generation across the globe. All so that Bibi can cling to power a bit longer.

Edit: Spelling

arunabha··on ‘I witnessed war crimes’ in Gaza – former worker at GHF aid site [video]
> Israel's real enemy won't stop and won't surrender until that country and it's people don't exist

Funny, this seems to be a pretty accurate description of Netanyahu's current position. He understands that he exists politically only as long as he can keep the war going. So, of course there is going to be no end to the 'war' against Hamas, even though it has transformed into mass genocide of civilians using starvation.

arunabha··on Wife of ICEBlock app founder speaks out after DOJ fires her
No, the flagging brigade on HN is largely composed of a small minority of ultra right wing tech bros who had their wet dream come true when Trump got elected again.

Also, HN's algorithms have been set up to encourage and abet such behaviour and then blame the 'algorithm'. Not surprising given who owns this site.

arunabha··on Wife of ICEBlock app founder speaks out after DOJ fires her
From the article

The DOJ told Newsweek: "For several weeks, the Department of Justice inquired into this former employee's activities and discovered she has a sizable interest in All U Chart, Inc., the company that holds the IP for ICEBlock. ICEBlock is an app that illegal aliens use to evade capture while endangering the lives of ICE officers by disclosing their location. This DOJ will not tolerate threats against law enforcement or law enforcement officers."

arunabha··on US companies, consumers are paying for tariffs, not foreign firms
The irony of the situation is that tariffs can work to make domestic industry more competitive, if they are applied strategically and backed by focused industrial policy.

China's dominance of the EV market is a recent case in point. China went from having approximately zero percent of the EV market in 2008 to completely dominating by the end of 2024 with an end to end vertically integrated EV manufacturing capability and a definite technological edge in some of the most critical areas. It took a decade plus of stringent protection for the fledgling EV industry and a couple of hundred billion dollars in subsidies, but they have ensured their dominance of the EV industry for a generation at the very least.

The US on the other hard, applied tariffs in an indiscriminate, chaotic manner(no one sane is going to invest anything when US policy depends on the whim of the president) and applied it even to raw materials which our remaining industries desperately need.

Also, instead of creating sound industrial policy, we seem to be hell bent on destroying the very foundations of US dominance in many industries by actively attacking science and technology in the country, from gutting scientifically focused agencies to waging a vicious war on universities and foreign students.

All of this for what? To add 5 trillion to our debt by passing a tax cut that predominantly benefits corporations and billionaires? To make the MAGA base feel good about making life miserable for 'the others'? This truly feels like the beginning of the end for the American empire or even the American experiment.

You can never count out the American capability for reinvention, but at some point, patches and refactorings stop working and you need a rewrite.

arunabha··on A Virginia public library is fighting off a takeover by private equity
> Human nature (greed) is never the problem, because it cannot be changed. Focus only on what can be changed.

The statement might appear to be pedantically true, but it's not true in practice. Sure, greed cannot be eliminated, but you certainly have systems which control the actions which result from greed. In reality, the actions brought on by greed are the real problem and we have an entire branch of the US govt(the legislature) dedicated to setting up mechanisms(laws) to discourage unwanted actions via threat of consequences.

So, it's certainly possible to mitigate the effects of greed. What people are pointing out is that of late corporations(and more specifically the C suite) have faced few if any consequences for detrimental behaviour driven by greed.

Hence the problem.

arunabha··on How U.S. Tourists Are Dealing with a New Animosity Overseas
WTF!! Even this kind of a story is being flagged? What the hell happened to HN?
arunabha··on How U.S. Tourists Are Dealing with a New Animosity Overseas
Out of curiosity, what about the MAGA philosophy appeals to you? And how would you rate the Trump administration so far?
arunabha··on IDF officers ordered to fire at unarmed crowds near Gaza food distribution sites
> Not wanting to help is not the same as killing.

You do realize that a significant fraction of Israel's military budget comes from the US?

arunabha··on IDF officers ordered to fire at unarmed crowds near Gaza food distribution sites
> Every case needs to be investigated thoroughly and punished accordingly.

And who exactly do you propose should do that? The Israeli govt?

arunabha··on US Supreme Court limits federal judges' power to block Trump orders
No? Both are unilateral executive orders.

arunabha··on New US visa rules will force foreign students to unlock social media profiles
> The concept is far from new, it's just being extended.

Maybe, but it's a bit like extending the concept of a grenade to a nuclear bomb. The amount of the 'concept' applied matters substantially.

arunabha··on New US visa rules will force foreign students to unlock social media profiles
> USA is a beautiful place to visit and people are very hositable

Yeah, the jury is still out on the second part of the claim.

arunabha··on New US visa rules will force foreign students to unlock social media profiles
I'm wondering how the officials are planning to verify which social media accounts an applicant holds. Apparently the idea of creating a 'clean' account for inspection is novel to them.

Also, pleasantly surprised to see this not immediately flagged off the front page. Of late, the flagging has been particularly trigger happy.

arunabha··on Just How Many More Successful UBI Trials Do We Need?
Why was this story flagged? It has no mention of any of the hot button political topics that usually get banned.

Honestly, the thin skin on some of the folks here is in a class of it's own.

arunabha··on Ask HN: Do you think there's censorship on HN?
There doesn't seem to be any overt censorship, however the ranking algorithms play a role in making it appear that some stories are being deliberately buried.

The 'official' explanation that I got from Dang was that political posts hit automated software filters because of flagging and down voting which cause them to disappear from the front page.

Separately, sometimes the moderation team disables these filters on certain posts, but it's not often.

arunabha··on I'm the CTO of Palantir. Today I Join the Army
> I bet you also think that a president using both the National Guard and active-duty soldiers to quell unrest is, like, totally unprecedented and omg 100% Nazi.

I'm curious as to what your thoughts are on this topic. From the context it seems like you're not convinced that this is the case.

arunabha··on [dead]
This seems to be heading straight for the supreme court. I sincerely hope that Trump doesn't decide to ignore the order, since then we would be looking at an armed unit having to decide between obeying the courts vs the president.

It's sickening to see how far and fast affairs have become the stuff of nightmares.

arunabha··on Israel Launches Attack on Iran's Nuclear Facilities
It was foreshadowed, but still shocking. A strike on Israel on the eve of US talks with Iran is pretty unprecedented.
arunabha··on Chatbots are replacing Google's search, devastating traffic for some publishers
> People will pay for it.

I would love it if it were true, but sadly, the data doesn't support this. A lot of local newspapers did real journalism relevant to their communities. However, the local newspapers were the hardest hit by the social media wave and few remain today. Fast forward to now, you cannot get any real local news easily.

The avg person never really valued real journalism to begin with and the hyper targeting/polarization of social media and closed echo chambers has made it worse.

arunabha··on Marines being mobilized in response to LA protests
Didn't the supreme court determine that presidents have 'broad immunity' for 'official acts'? Of course, they gave future justices some wriggle room with the somewhat vague wording, but the current court seems very sympathetic to the unitary executive theory.
arunabha··on Marines being mobilized in response to LA protests
Do you mean the protesting the work of Federal and ICE agents? Since when did that become 'attacking citizens'?

If that's the bar, then I'm wondering how you'd classify the J6 mob? Remember, the president explicitly pardoned each and every J6 protester who was duly convicted in a court of law by a jury so at best there are some extreme double standards being applied.

arunabha··on Tell HN: Help restore the tax deduction for software dev in the US (Section 174)
I think an implicit assumption here is that the company is able to survive the five years. This rule affects cash flow in the initial years pretty hard and a lot of small companies cannot survive that.

arunabha··on US Trade Court finds Trump tariffs illegal
Yeah, but then you're depending on a notoriously fickle and unreliable person wanting or remembering to do that when the time comes. Sure, if you're a true believer in the cause you'll take that risk, but a majority of the people in any administration are opportunists, not ideologues.
