I've been rate limited by HN and I think it's my cue to exit. This is my final message to the community with my best regards

I consider a message from dang as a badge of honour.

I totally understand the tone of my messaging is rather incongruous with the ethics of this site but I hope you can believe there is a light that shines deep within which actually cares and nurtures a deep love for our community and everyone in it.

I'm not sure if you can call it tough love but it's a mask for a sincere affection. I will try a different tack and I am grateful to your words.

It's our Achilles heel that we don't recognize our own selves and don't always see ourselves in others, we use the voice we talk to ourselves with to speak to the world around us

It's like I'm trying to solve the hardest computer problem on earth and I've been banging my head on my desk for an eternity. I think we can all relate to that feeling.

It's good of you all to keep it real for all of us, goodbye.

There are advantages for dressing up but you'll never understand them by taking the majority view.

Nobody cares what anyone wears at home we're talking comfort at work.

And again, a suit is ultimately a dress down garment requiring less care to put on than a track suit.

In all this discourse nobody ever bothered to ask what dressing is even defined as and we're supposed to call ourselves software engineers.

Another hint: wearing swag is not equivalent to dressing up.

artsyca··on Ask HN: Wildly Unpopular Opinions
By the way don't take my words in the other reply to heart bro. Nobody has ever worked in a dress up environment but everyone is convinced it's not for them but I've seen it firsthand and it's way better and different.

It's like when we emphasize the work over anything it's laying the foundation for toxic behaviours whereas then we emphasize the attitude that goes into the work the whole culture changes.

Most people will probably never experience it in their whole lives.. But they'll go to their deaths in uncomfortable outfits, yuck.

Hmm yea I can dig that. Next time it comes up I'll mention sethhammons told me to do it.

Actually it's good because if you find yourself stubbing too much you may be hiding complexity in your code.

My dude! I'm feeling these items. Especially the white space. I've used coffeescript so I totally get it.

As for RMS from what I just looked up it seems he was making one of those computer scientist arguments like "all the aliens in the room are green" (because there are zero aliens in the room) type of no true scotsman arguments about an issue way too soon.

Again with LISP -- people can't get the syntax so they assume it can't be got.

Wow! 100% agree on public schooling, I've witnessed it firsthand here during the pandemic. The kids were way better off without it.

I'm feeling your other points too. It's funny how wrong we can be about such fundamental issues.

artsyca··on Ask HN: Wildly Unpopular Opinions
Bro I appreciate your reply and I want to remind you this is a wildly unpopular opinions thread so I'd encourage you to try to look at things from a different angle than playing the "I disagree" card which carries no merit here whatsoever.

As a hint I'd like to convey that the blazer is actually a dress down apparel compared to the outfits it replaced and the suit is designed as the ultimate comfort and convenience garment so if you can't feel comfortable in a suit and assume therefore it's impossible to for anyone to be comfortable in one, maybe you just haven't found the right tailor you know?

Which goes to my point that people don't understand what dressing up even means let alone how to do it.

artsyca··on Ask HN: Wildly Unpopular Opinions
How we dress at work makes way more of a difference than we understand.

The main reason startup culture sucks people up and spits out their bones is because we've taken the worst parts of corporacy and left all the best ones to rot.

If a manager doesn't understand the importance of dressing up at least a few days a week he doesn't deserve the responsibility and most of the problems in this corporate world are down to young men who haven't discovered themselves but are willing to sacrifice all their energies in proving they're the best at something they know very little about.

artsyca··on Advice to new managers: don't joke about firing people
No matches for the words 'shirt' or 'tie' or 'dress' in any of the comments.

This probably means nothing to anyone here but it used to be auspicious for people promoted into management to actually dress the part not out of prideful superiority but modesty and respect and and acknowledgement of this duty and responsibility.

Think of it as a flag in software.

A lot of the conversations we have are already on the wrong level when it's a manager in jeans looking like it's his day off but what would anyone know about this when comfort reigns supreme and we're all at best only half invested in anything we do professionally.

If you plan to down vote this rather than doing it in the silent way, put a reasoning for your action or move on.

artsyca··on The “Majority Illusion” in Social Networks (2016)
Y'all are going to crucify me for this comment but I believe we also suffer this as a technology community.

We assume certain unhelpful behaviours are the norm and perpetuate toxic defaults through the majority illusion and what amounts to impostor syndrome.

artsyca··on Why I don’t usually meet startups in person (2019)
I think I can understand what you're saying but you obviously can't understand what I'm saying.

You're objecting to my use of the word foundation for some reason and all I'm getting out of it is why even bother.

But here goes anyway as you may have heard words have multiple meanings and not everyone uses them the same way.

I'm referring to the second meaning of foundation: an underlying basis or principle.

Culture -> society -> civilization

These three things are built on each other.

When one changes all the others are affected without necessarily being destroyed but yes if one is destroyed the others will suffer too.

You're also probably referring to an alternate definition of civilization as in all of humanity whereas if you ask Siri the definition of civilization is literally what I've written so like why all the hate bub?

"The society, culture and way of life in a particular area" i.e inside a corporation.

Mess with the culture and it has outward ripples to the entire way of life duh

artsyca··on Zuckerberg: I just shared the following note with our employees
We all act like we're above the false corporacy with our casual ways and toxic pecadilloes but it's actually a signal that we're willing to be even more ignorant than the average bloke.
artsyca··on Why I don’t usually meet startups in person (2019)
What are you saying? the minute culture shifts so does civilization. Look at where we are now compared to where we were in the industrial age.

This whole techbro culture has destroyed corporate society and brought about drastic shifts in the entire world civilization and not for the better.

What is this wishful thinking?

Edit: and by the way the word 'culture' comes from the latin for 'core' it's by definition the foundation. I can't believe we're arguing the semantics of well-known words look up culture and society for yourself.

Edit 2: think of your culture like a potluck dinner. Everyone brings their carefully prepared dishes. Some latecomer shows up to the door with a wad of cash and says I didn't prepare anything but suddenly the money they brought entitles them to be first in line. What kind of civilization can exist under these cultural manners?

artsyca··on Why I don’t usually meet startups in person (2019)
When you create a corporation, you're essentially creating a society (remember: culture is the foundation of society and society is the foundation of civilization)

You can model your society in any way you wish but the intention ought to be to make your society more competitive and capable than the default (i.e. society at large)

The socialist system is something along the lines of 'from each according to his abilities to each according to his needs' but that has never worked out in practice.

There are other systems but the capitalist system ('to each according to his investment, from the collective pot') is close but we mistake what investment is and we drastically misunderstand how to maximize the collective pot.

The whole VC system as it currently stands is a symptom of our distorted view of what investment is and the breakdown of trust required for people to truly maximize their returns, nothing more.

VC's bring money to the table and it seems that this buys them enhanced privilege compared to people who bring other sorts of investment. The minute you begin the VC conversation you begin devaluing the investments of people who bring other sorts of investment (i.e. faith, effort, opportunity costs) and create a sort of toxic feedback bubble whereby the entire system goes off the rails because apart from the money the VC's are hardly invested in your vision, innit

hence the term 'vulture capitalists' -- how are VC's any different from tech recruiters anyway?.

The only way to make any money is to sell something somebody else makes.

Oh c'mon when someone rage quits in protest these corporations have safeguards in place to prevent rogue actions. I'm surprised they didn't trigger a visit from the thought police given the high profile and instead let a potential bad actor remain on the premises a whole extra week?

And yes all our energies should be towards changing the organizations, as systems professionals, rather than competing on "look what I can do" while the world outside our gated communities crumbles.

Totally agree but there are many people there now who could use his help to fight for what they believe in. He's not just one guy trying to get some hair brained initiative passed.

Our problem is we seek acceptance and agreement too much and don't fight for what others believe in on principle.

We're all to blame but now we have one less person who can do anything about it. Look at the world from the outside in for once and quit suffering your blasted anecdoche.

Actually agile is supposed to be a disruptive process that enables upward change but we keep doing it all wrong squeezing features out our asses when we should be making organizational changes.

We should all know we're trying to change them and help each other, how else?

Tell me you've never tried and failed due to "politics" but have you ever stuck your neck out even a little?

artsyca··on I'm resigning from my job at Facebook
I'm calling total BS. He should stay to change the system from within. Total waste of hard work to give up now. This is a knee jerk reaction and the poor lamb is going to live to regret it.

I'm surprised they didn't have him out on his ass the same day and gave him a whole extra week to potentially sabotage the systems.

Edit:

OK fine. I agree it's totally an uphill struggle and in all fairness it's one we're all fighting. It's one man versus a sea of apathy where all the incentives are geared towards productivity at all costs and bitter disempowerment and ostracism for anyone that steps out of line.

I were him I'd go hardcore until they actually fired me i.e. make it hard for them rather than take a gallant bow -- how's that for starters?

Whatever happened to fighting for what you believe in? How can you leave all your hard work in the hands of people you no longer trust?

I've actually gone all the way up and been fired by a roomful of directors and a vice president for calling out bullshit agile theatre.

Part of it rests on everyone's shoulders because I know for sure a lot of people reading this thread right now would jump at the chance to take his place, struggle be damned.

Look at what happens to anyone that expresses a dissenting opinion I'd like to see more downvotes just to make sure I'm on the right side of this issue.
