Ultra-marathon runner, private pilot(small planes), dabbling skydiver, and more prominently a mid-level .Net developer with a Bachelor's of Science CS degree; just started the next phase of my professional career(albeit still a code monkey). Would love to hear from fellow HN posters.

artmageddon··on Is software development really a dead-end job after age 35-40?
I'm 35.5 years old and I just started a masters in CS program(have a BS in CS already), so fuck I hope not
artmageddon··on Cassini has crashed into Saturn
I assume it would just be with tardigrades, but can they even survive / thrive on Saturn?

artmageddon··on Ask HN: Is Georgia Tech's Online Master in CS Worth It?
It better be, my first class for the fall semester starts in a week!
artmageddon··on The man who wrote the book on password management regrets the error
I finally started using KeePassX so I could keep track of the insanely long and randomized passwords it creates across the same plethora of sites you've listed. I love using it, but there's no way in hell I can quickly update so many different credentials conveniently(e.g. update your password every 6 months or so? Just kill me now)
artmageddon··on Ask HN: What personal finance advice would you give your 25yo self ?
This probably doesn't apply to a lot of people, but I got a ton of mileage out of my DSLR and learned a lot about photography in the process. I mean unfortunately the one I bought (and still have) from 2009 is pretty dated now, I wouldn't consider it a waste(unless you count the fact I could've spent those on bitcoin instead and been a millionaire).
artmageddon··on Why American Workers Now Dress So Casually
My goodness, when was this? I worked there for a short stint in 2000, right around the launch of the PlayStation 2(which was an utter nightmare in of itself). I probably would've flipped if I had been subjected to that.
artmageddon··on The Awful Reign of the Red Delicious (2014)
I never thought my taste for red delicious apples were something I'd have to feel about the way people did about eating McDonald's(I mean obv they're different, but..)

artmageddon··on A response to “Why you can't be a good .NET developer” (2016)
I'll have to admit the lack of ability to do quick refactoring has bitten me on more than one occasion.. :/
artmageddon··on A response to “Why you can't be a good .NET developer” (2016)
This makes me feel a bit better about sticking with ol' ADO.Net.
artmageddon··on Libor: Bank of England implicated in secret recording
The spread between the two that is worth paying attention to, as well. Pre-crisis, the two were pretty much in lock-step with one another and no one cared about it. As the crisis emerged, and beyond, the two diverged significantly.

What kind of modeling are you doing with a beast of a setup like that?

artmageddon··on What the death of the CRT display technology means for classic arcade machines
My wife had never really been in a real arcade till she and I visited that very same one, and we were both blown away!
artmageddon··on Why it’s hard for programmers to write a program to flatten a list?
I haven't done any interview prep in quite awhile and I feel like even a question like this would leave me dead in the water, given what the post laid out.
artmageddon··on Ask HN: What addition or change would improve your quality of life?
What are you doing now, and if I can ask, how old are you?

> marrying my 4-year girlfriend.

I highly recommend eloping! My wife and I did that, and hoo-boy it took so much pressure off of us(not to mention saved us a lot of money).

artmageddon··on Welcome, ACLU
See Soneil's response. She does qualify for it, but it's not instant. You have to be on a conditional green card for two years, then on a regular green card(which lasts ten years). We have to wait another year before we can have the conditional aspect of her green card removed. But with USCIS allegedly pausing it, even if we try to get it removed, nothing will move forward, but the clock will keep ticking till it expires.
artmageddon··on Welcome, ACLU
The ACLU doesn't have a problem with 2A, but they see gun ownership as a collective right rather than an individual right. They have stood up for 2A rights in the past, but compared to the NRA and other 2A advocates, they have very limited resources, so they let the NRA / et. al. handle them.
artmageddon··on Welcome, ACLU
There are plenty of people who are trying to become American, as well. My wife came here from Iran to study at an American University, and her conditional green card is set to expire next year. We want her to get her citizenship as fast as possible. Now it seems that USCIS has put all that on pause though, so we're sweating bullets over whether they'll actually let us file the petition to have the conditional aspect removed in a year's time. If they don't, we're fucked and all of the work and money(read: thousands of dollars) we put into putting her through the system properly will have been all for nothing. FYI I'm an American citizen.
artmageddon··on Welcome, ACLU
FWIW that's also a Bible verse, from Matthew 7:5[0].

artmageddon··on Make America Hate Again
> Yes, it sucks for law-abiding citizens of these countries who would like to visit the US in the next 120 days. But it is only temporary.

This assumes that the other countries will comply with the administrations requests for information on the individuals, otherwise it will be extended indefinitely. Iran doesn't have a US embassy and they don't officially have relations with the US, you think they're going to suddenly start handing over information to the US? If anything, this gives them more reason to say, "See how the US is treating us like shit?" which further stirs up anti-US sentiment among them.

Also, yes, green card holders ARE affected by this. My wife won't be able to leave the country without fear of being denied entry upon her return despite her being a valid green card holder.

artmageddon··on Apple has allegedly begun removing Iranian iOS apps from the App store
Those are links to a whole other issue that deserves its own discussion. Why not the following from the article itself:

"However the Iranian Transactions and Sanctions Regulations issued by the U.S. Department of the Treasury puts blocks on this market. According to Techrasa, Apple has sent the following to Iranian startups attempting to upload apps:

“Unfortunately, there is no App Store available for the territory of Iran. Additionally, apps facilitating transactions for businesses or entities based in Iran may not comply with the Iranian Transactions Sanctions Regulations (31CFR Part 560) when hosted on the App Store. For these reasons, we are unable to accept your application at this time. We encourage you to resubmit your application once international trade laws are revised to allow this functionality.”

artmageddon··on First they came for the Iranians
I completely agree with you and expressed my best wishes and sympathy to OP - but I'd also like to take a moment to appreciate the irony of your username in this thread! :)
artmageddon··on First they came for the Iranians
Which makes no sense - the US and Iran don't have relations at all, why would they suddenly start handing over information on their visa applicants? This hurts the US more than helps, by a long, long shot.
artmageddon··on First they came for the Iranians
I know it wont' help, but as a US citizen, please accept my apologies for everything that you're going through due to these circumstances being set up by the new administration here. My wife is also an Iranian CS student and she's been here for the past few years. She's looking to go home to see her family for Nowruz, and we're not even sure if it's a good idea for her to do so, despite her being a greencard holder. I'm hoping for the best for her, for you, and for all of us.
