arthurk··on Are You Productive In the Morning Or Creative at Night?
It's exactly the opposite for me. If I don't eat a good breakfast I'm likely to get nothing done.
arthurk··on Ask HN: How do you read RSS feeds?
I'm using Google Reader for mostly personal blogs but visit sites like HN directly since they tend to clutter my whole feed reader. I had subscribed to the HN feed for a long time but since the feed displays every blog post that hits the frontpage there were a lot of uninteresting entries.

I would re-subscribe to the HN feed if there were some option for a feed which only displays entries with X upvotes and/or X comments (and X could be specified in the options).

The general problem with subscribing to the feed is that I don't see which entries are popular and which not because stories tend to hit the frontpage rather fast on HN compared to other big sites.

For now, I just visit HN and click on a few stories on the frontpage (mostly these with many comments or upvotes).

Is there a way to see this article without registering?
arthurk··on Ask YC: Login system
That's a great functionality you'll see on some sites with the lost password function. You can register without an email and use all functionality except the "lost password" function — if you want to use it, you need to specify it in your account settings.

I think HN and del.icio.us do this.

Is there some other functionality on your site that doesn't require payment?

arthurk··on Reddit goes open source - the actual announcement from reddit.
Line 298 in r2/r2/config/middleware.py:

#god this shit is disorganized and confusing

arthurk··on Where on the Internet to chat with geeks?
irc.freenode.net of course. A few HN users are in #startups
arthurk··on Ask HN: Please critique my webapp
Looking at the source code:

- minimize CSS & JS (especially the 124kb prototype.js file). You are using 257kb ONLY for javascript.

- gzip

- Why load each company logo on the top separate? put them all in one image file and save HTTP requests

- Unicode error in line 6: "copyright 2007 J2Solutions" therefore not valid XHTML

arthurk··on Ask HN: Please critique my webapp
Exactly my first thought. Funny how little things get noticed first.

There was only one bug fixed, and it is only relevant to Mac users: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=436575
arthurk··on Ask YC: Does anybody enjoy unit testing their code?
You should take a look at test driven developmnt e.g. write the test first then code.
arthurk··on Command Line Tools in Python
YAML 1.2 (currently only available as a working draft) will be a superset of JSON. The current YAML 1.1 is not because of some issues like encoding, whitespace, escape characters, etc.

Also read the "Relation to JSON" section of the 1.2 draft: http://yaml.org/spec/1.2/#id2560236

arthurk··on Ask YC: What are some of the Python blogs you read?
There are actually two planet python's.

The official one: http://planet.python.org/ The unofficial one: http://planetpython.org/

both are great.

Nice, but I personally prefer Jonathan Coulton's Code Monkey song ;-)

arthurk··on Why you shoud never use your favorite password on News.YCombinator.com
You can do this with most sites.

I don't know how much more load SSL would cause but a good solution would be to just use HTTPS for the login and then redirect back to the HTTP, like Twitter does.

arthurk··on Ask HN: Fink or Macports?
I've been pretty happy with MacPorts. I mostly use it for apache, git, mysql, php, postgresql, sqlite and a few other small stuff. everything works pretty fine. Django is installed from trunk.
arthurk··on Ask HN: how did you fix problems with bad sleep?
Same problem here. I try not to think about the past or the future too much because you can't change or predict it anyway.
arthurk··on Ask YC: Shared hosting providers that don't suck?
Or use "WPDH2" as a promo code and get some additional storage and bandwidth (http://www.dreamhost.com/wordpress.html)

I've been using Dreamhost for a while now (to host my blog) and it has been pretty much okay but I wouldn't host any critical stuff on it.

WebFaction (http://www.webfaction.com) and Slicehost (http://www.slicehost.com) are pretty popular lately (although not _that_ cheap). I would probably go with webfaction for a django app.

arthurk··on Ask YC: How do you organize and manage your daily contents?
I write them down in my Moleskine (which i take everywhere). At the end of the week I review the ideas and normally start prototyping the following week.

What about _good_ movies that make you think?
arthurk··on Being a mathematician is cool again (at least for a couple of weeks).
This reminds me of Numbers, where they just throw some crazy looking math stuff on a chalkboard but never really explain it. I hope the movie is better than that!
arthurk··on Ubuntu 8.04 is out
Does anyone have a list of all the applications+versions included like which X.org, Gnome, Kernel etc. are used?
