How could anyone say something contraversial yet so brave! Please do Fowler next :))))))
arpa··on ProctorU is dystopian spyware
Welp. We are in a dead-end.
arpa··on Richard “Lowtax” Kyanka, creator of Somethingawful, has died
oh man, Zack Parsons' series "the insidious beast" and "instructions for a thing" were the best series i've ever read on the web. He kind of lost me a bit later on.

there is qualitative difference between simple memorization and generalized pattern recognition. You fail to distinguish the two very distinct things, one of which admittedly is the base of the other, but the other one is very much required for higher cognitive function.

Memorization can be done on a cellular level, generalized pattern recognition - not so much.

arpa··on ProctorU is dystopian spyware
It's not memorization, it's pattern recognition that really counts. What sound "a" mkes is irrelevnt if you're recognizing the relevnt pttern. So it's you who's in the wrong.
arpa··on WSL2 can now mount Linux ext4 disks directly
And so EEE marches on.

What worries me is that in search of diversity we might lose the goal of objective verifiable truth that is more often than not (IMO) denied, labeled as propaganda, and politicized by certain typically right-leaning groups. You need not go watch fox news to get an unbiased picture of how the world is, you need to get FACTS instead of opinions and you need a certain analytical/critical toolset, not a diversity of unbased opinions.

ha ha.

arpa··on Spending $5k to learn how database indexes work
HA/clustered/replicated DB setups are not rocket science. Backups are not rocket science. Losing an on-prem database irrevocably never happened for me in 20 years.
arpa··on Spending $5k to learn how database indexes work
Well this was an embarrasing read.
arpa··on Leaving Debian
What do you mean you can't firewall against PID 1?
arpa··on Physics Student Earns PhD at Age 89
It's immigration policy, not qualitative PhD difference.
arpa··on Physics Student Earns PhD at Age 89
PhD is still a PhD in any continent. How academics organize their work is another question.
arpa··on Bringing back Cartoon Modern, a rare animation artbook
is it really art deco though? I think it's closer to modernist art: art deco is flat, but very symetric, straight, well-defined, intentional, rigid. Also art deco is very much about bling and excess and grandeur: think great Gatsby party scenes. The style here is more reminescent of Picasso: uneven, in motion, tilted, psychotic even. What we see here is also much more plain, restrained (in terms of grandiosity) and even threadbare: it's Picasso and friends before they're famous drinking cheap wine in their run-down attic studio in Paris.

That having been said, I don't really dig the style presented in the article, but I see the aesthetic value nonetheless. I'm not sure it would be possible to pull off high quality modernism with ubiquitness metro art has. Probably we would get something much, much worse...

arpa··on The metaverse is bullshit
I wonder, will they do this while simultaneously broadcasting my real name (as per RealName policies)?
arpa··on The metaverse is bullshit
Without even reading the article: you don't say! color me surprised!

ethics aside, this is very, very cool, and very, very important research!
arpa··on Remote-first work is taking over the rich world – research hints at why
That's exactly how global economics work, albeit not instantly.
arpa··on Remote-first work is taking over the rich world – research hints at why
yeah, no. Salaries are going to rise all over the world, especially if you talk about salaries. Is it true that a junior dev can have $240k/y in US for example? screw decades of my experience, imma be a junior dev :D

You also have to take into account that working for US company is not that desirable because of the employer culture, for example. Some of us like worker protection laws, for example, or government-mandated guaranteed vacation time or double pay for overtime or some weeks off when you have a newborn on your hands. Or be informed months in advance about your lay-off and be compensated hansomely for that (if the company isn't folding).

In the US these things are under the employers' discretion, and it's considered something amazing and impossible, like ambulance rides that don't cost more than your kidney on black market.

And lose that over 1/10th of what you guys get? Hahaha, oh wow, you're insane. If I have no guarantees, I want to be compensated accordingly! So don't get your knickers in a knot and perpetuate the "omg remote is killing workers" meme. Remote is better for everyone.

Oh and by the way, you know what protects you from %worker apocalypse reason%? UNIONS. There's a reason the bald fuck's afraid of them.

Jesus.

I call bullshit.
arpa··on I deleted data from production
I do not see where I said that. I am sorry, but you're projecting. Safety rules are written in blood; production safety rules are written in critical incidents and cold sweat. To err is human.
arpa··on I deleted data from production
yeah this is not something to be proud of. At least make up a reason!
arpa··on I deleted data from production
Mistakes happen. People forget which environment they are on. people forget where statement in their DELETE query. People misremember their cwd prior to running rm. Sometimes it's lack of experience, sometimes lack of sleep, sometimes just shit luck. Very rarely it's lack of responsibility.

And regarding your team members: if you don't trust them, don't rant about it on public forum, man, move them away from important systems, implement personal improvement plan, and when that fails, fire them.

arpa··on Feasibility of a Dune Ornithopter
That's what happens when you put your trust in autocorrect: you lose all the thrust ))))

I've turned off the autocorrect, and now I get all kinds of stupid touch interface mistypes, and lose time over correcting them, but at least i'm not miscorrected all the time.

arpa··on Feasibility of a Dune Ornithopter
trust != thrust, just so you know.
arpa··on Polishing Cloth
Disturbing lack of DRM. It should only be possible to polish apple devices with it. And, of course, any other polishing cloth should render these devices inoperable.
arpa··on Netflix's new player breaks the ability to modify the seeking of a playing video

arpa··on Netflix's new player breaks the ability to modify the seeking of a playing video
I don't want to believe the battle is lost, but I don't see a way to fight back aside from establishing a hacker counterculture, which is kind of happening with tor and internet alternatives.
arpa··on Netflix's new player breaks the ability to modify the seeking of a playing video

arpa··on Netflix's new player breaks the ability to modify the seeking of a playing video
