I am a shitty person, but.

arpa··on Ask HN: Is there a bubble in the tech market? Is it about to explode?
There eventually will be masses with pitchforks and torches at our doors when they finally get the whiff of the software "engineering" we all do. That won't happen this decade.
arpa··on What they don't teach you about sockets
i have no idea how networks work, and i have been doing link splitting, bonding, packet scheduling and dabbling in bgp in 2004. The knowledge i've gained since helps immensely when debugging simple networks created by kube-proxy, but i am just petrified by amount of the iceberg that remains underneath. And to this day i'm slightly perplexed when udp socket operation in php throws `connection reset` exception.
arpa··on The Dangers of Microsoft Pluton
... and this is why piracy will always continue to be a viable alternative.
arpa··on Google fires engineer who called its AI sentient
why are you booing? you know i'm right.
arpa··on Google fires engineer who called its AI sentient
more diverse, maybe.
arpa··on Google fires engineer who called its AI sentient
Ego is not "you". Ego is just a group of distinct cognitive mechanisms working in unison which is perceived as a whole. It is absolutely unrelated to free will and sentience.
arpa··on Why can't we have raw UDP in JavaScript?
ARP and ICMP are protocols separate from TCP/UDP.
arpa··on How to fuck up an airport
any fool can do it! brb, building a railway.
arpa··on Pirate Library Mirror: Preserving 7TB of books (that are not in Libgen)
in the world that has become a parody of itself it is not unfathomable that the GP post was dead serious.
arpa··on What's the Point
Fuck the internet in its' current state indeed.
arpa··on Everything that makes working with databases easier
I'm afraid imma have to disagree with ya here dude
arpa··on The Complexity Trap
... uranium to oil is what oil is to coal.
arpa··on Everything that makes working with databases easier
Filesystem is just another key-value database when you think about it.
arpa··on Everything that makes working with databases easier
Ignore sanity checks, best advice ever!
arpa··on Total Commander forced to stop letting you install APKs
haha, it was scrubbed maybe 10 years ago.
arpa··on Collapse OS
This has TempleOS feel.
arpa··on Please put units in names
Assuming all currencies have 2 decimal units and subunits have 1:100 ratio is another major footgun: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_4217
arpa··on Please put units in names
This, one million times this. Use SI units. Don't measure distance in hotdogs, time in fortnights and speed in hotdogs per fortnight! It is as stupid as it sounds.

If you do, be explicit about it either in parameter or function name. I'm not going to put you on my shitlist if you're naming your function `microsleep`, but if I have to go look into implementation to see that you count timeout on your database in microseconds (looking at you, couchbase, like you ever could return something from a larger dataset in microseconds, lol) or, even worse, cache expiry time in minutes (hello unknown developer), I am going to go on the internet and complain about you.

arpa··on Spotify was down
don't think so.
arpa··on AlphaCode as a dog speaking mediocre English
Hey it sure feels nice to know that now a "dog" is much more clever than me.

but then again, its approach is so vastly different that it makes it really incomparable with our typical modus operandi. It's throwing millions of monkeys into millions of typewriters and actually producing "to be or not to be" reliably.

I don't see AI writing Shakespeare in my lifetime though (I hope to die rather soon).

arpa··on Do things, tell people (2012)
Do things for yourself. Find things missing and improve upon them. Don't think about the "product", but think what you want.

Unless you're not talking about the self-improvement path outlined in the post, but rather a startup. In that case things get a little more difficult.

arpa··on There Is a Much Larger Problem Than the Great Resignation
Old man yells at cloud. Younger people don't want to do jobs their parents/grandparents perceived as lesser and told them to avoid by going to college. Now they make a surprised pikachu face: janitors are generally old! All your own damn fault, boomer. All your own damn fault.
arpa··on Does my site need HTTPS?
four letters in schema bad, five letters in schema good.
arpa··on Does my site need HTTPS?
effort / gain ratio is crap tho. Especially assuming IPv4 and reasonable firewalling.
arpa··on Does my site need HTTPS?
But it runs in my LAN.
arpa··on Despite the hype, iPhone security no match for NSO spyware (2021)
Unexpected! Both options in duopoly are insecure! Very surprised!!! /s
arpa··on Naomi Wu video demonetized on YouTube
What I don't get is how in year 2022, having landed on the moon and tricked silicon into computing for us, we as a western civilization still haven't come to terms with our own bodies, other peoples' bodies, the fact that we have a sex drive, the fact that we can and do have sex for pleasure and punish ourselves for all of these things. It's insane.
arpa··on Nintendo Switch game cartridges taste offensively bad (2017)
Even more so, counterfeit drinks contaminated with methanol have killed people who accidentally bought and unknowingly consumed said drinks, even in bars! Becherovka incidents come to mind.

so you're not killing tax evaders, but rather random innocents.

arpa··on Foobar2000
41m € of alleged losses. And for that want, the library of Alexandria was burned down.
arpa··on I was deceived about Covid vaccine safety
Sophisticated? not really.
