aroman··on MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max
Apple released the M5 MBP more than half a year ago...
aroman··on MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max
They raised the base price by $200.
aroman··on Show HN: Semantic search engine for Studio Ghibli movie
I feel fairly confident that Miyazaki would hate this :(

This decontextualization is the antithesis of the creative studio culture he worked so hard to cultivate. The Ghibli Museum in Japan goes into this “embodied creativity” idea in great detail, and seeing this just makes me sad. I’m sure it’s a cool and technically interesting project, nice showcase for Cloudflare stack, etc. I just wish it didn’t have to be Ghibli...

aroman··on Claude's new constitution
Ah I see, the paper is much more helpful in understanding how this is actually used. Where did you find that linked? Maybe I'm grepping for the wrong thing but I don't see it linked from either the link posted here or the full constitution doc.
aroman··on Claude's new constitution
Right, I'm saying "model training" is vague enough that I have no idea what Claude actually does with this document.

Edit: This helps: https://arxiv.org/abs/2212.08073

aroman··on Claude's new constitution
I don't understand what this is really about. Is this:

- A) legal CYA: "see! we told the models to be good, and we even asked nicely!"?

- B) marketing department rebrand of a system prompt

- C) a PR stunt to suggest that the models are way more human-like than they actually are

Really not sure what I'm even looking at. They say:

"The constitution is a crucial part of our model training process, and its content directly shapes Claude’s behavior"

And do not elaborate on that at all. How does it directly shape things more than me pasting it into CLAUDE.md?

aroman··on Why the Tech World Thinks the American Dream Is Dying
Dying? It's been long dead for almost everyone for some time.
aroman··on Cowork: Claude Code for the rest of your work
I think that feeling is what you get when you read too much Hacker News :) There are, in fact, more startups being created now than ever. And I promise you, people said the same thing about going up against IBM back in the day...
aroman··on Cowork: Claude Code for the rest of your work
> the models are close to being able to destroy the entire software industry

Are you saying this based on some insider knowledge of models being dramatically more capable internally, yet deliberately nerfed in their commercialized versions? Because I use the publicly available paid SOTA models every day and I certainly do not get the sense that their impact on the software industry is being restrained by deliberate choice but rather as a consequence of the limitations of the technology...

aroman··on Cloudflare was down
great news, schrodingersdetector.com is available!
aroman··on Cloudflare was down
looks like a big one. interestingly, our site, which uses a TON of Cloudflare services[0] — yet not their front-line proxy — is doing fine: https://magicgarden.gg.

So it seems like it's just the big ol' "throw this big orange reverse proxy in front of your site for better uptime!" is what's broken...

aroman··on Ghostty is now non-profit
Did you post this comment on the wrong article? Nothing here has anything to do with AI whatsoever.
aroman··on A new AI winter is coming?
When the hype is infinite (technological singularity and utopia), any reality will be a let down.

But there is so much real economic value being created - not speculation, but actual business processes - billions of dollars - it’s hard to seriously defend the claim that LLMs are “failures” in any practical sense.

Doesn’t mean we aren’t headed for a winter of sobering reality… but it doesn’t invalidate the disruption either.

aroman··on Apple M5 chip
Apparently Electron was using a private API to tweak how window border shadows were rendered.[0] I leave it to you to decide how to assign blame.

aroman··on Anthropic raises $13B Series F
I think you missed their joke :)
aroman··on macOS Tahoe brings a new disk image format
Apples and oranges. This is a new disk image format. You can create an APFS _volume_ in the ASIF _image_.
aroman··on Framework's first desktop is a strange–but unique–mini ITX gaming PC
Lol - it's not that Cloudflare can't handle the traffic. It's the _framework_ can't handle the traffic and set up Cloudflare to ratelimit entry using their Waiting Room[0] product.

Clearly poorly messaged if it made you think it was a Cloudflare capacity issue!

aroman··on The quiet art of attention
I read no moralizing or grandstanding in GP’s comment. It’s a valid point - most humans on planet earth will experience some form of mental disorder in their lifetime.[0]

aroman··on Hack Club Blot: A CNC drawing machine for programmatic art. Built with teenagers
this is really neat. the gallery page has some great little gems, like the among us logo and of course lots of fractals: https://blot.hackclub.com/gallery
aroman··on Type-Safe Printf() in TypeScript
As a general rule, if something is on the HN homepage and you find yourself asking "am I missing something?", the answer is almost by definition "yes" :)

It's just a cool use of some of typescript's more advanced features that many developers probably don't use on a day-to-day basis (likely for good reason, as other comments have pointed out!)

aroman··on GPU advancements in M3 and A17 Pro [video]
How can it be a WWDC session if it's referring to hardware only announced a few weeks ago?
aroman··on Dot by New Computer
> acquisition doesn't really count as sherlocking

Yes, that's my point, that there are other paths to this being adopted by Apple with on-device processing that are mutually beneficial both to the startup and Apple.

aroman··on Dot by New Computer
Same could have been said of Workflow — which Apple acquired and rebranded as a first-party app.
aroman··on Apple unveils M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max
It objectively is a problem for Apple as a corporation though, as they are expected by their shareholders to to continue to grow and increase profits year over year.
aroman··on ChatGPT cut off date now April 2023
Suppose there is a partial rollout? There’s lots of possible explanations. I don’t think GP faked it, I’m pointing out a verbatim question/answer pair isn’t a reliable test.
aroman··on ChatGPT cut off date now April 2023
it's a nondeterministic system... just because you ask it the same exact question doesn't mean you'll necessarily get the same response
aroman··on Essence: A desktop OS built from scratch, for control and simplicity
It’s not that they didn’t understand how to run a business… their refusal to accept “business help” was not because of inexperience or incompetence but because they didn’t believe it was compatible with their strongly idealistic perspective on business/capitalism/the world.

I’m not sure they’re wrong.
