arnath··on Show HN: Isitongamepass.gg
Oh this is a cool idea; I will add it to the list!

If you click on one of the cards, it opens a modal that has a store link.

The duplicates unfortunately don’t have identical titles. They’re close and I think I could do some matching, but it will be something like “Cool Game” and “Cool Game - Windows Edition”. Except that subtext isn’t the same for everything.

But doesn’t Gboard send your typing data to Google?
arnath··on Google blocks Truth Social from the Play Store
Oh ffs, in what universe is “Burn {idea} to the ground” a threat of violence?
arnath··on Ask HN: Who has moved from the U.S. to Europe?
At least in my experience, this isn't true where I live. Rent in Munich is basically the same as Seattle (where I used to live), if not higher. I pay something like 600 Euros/month/person for private health insurance in Germany. The fact that I'm ON private insurance is probably a mistake on my part, but that's a separate discussion.

And frankly, the $70k/year thing doesn't even count the increased bonus ranges or increased raises you get from that base salary increase.

arnath··on Ask HN: Who has moved from the U.S. to Europe?
Moved from Seattle to Munich, Germany a few years ago.

Biggest sacrifices: Pay is kind of a huge one. There are very few companies (even global ones) that pay the same in Europe as they do in the US. If I moved back to the US with my current company, I would get a ~70k/year increase in salary. Social situation is the other big one. It's hard to ever feel like you totally fit in as an expat.

Biggest gains: Quality of life is generally higher - food is better (quality, not taste, Munich's food scene kind of sucks), public transportation is better, healthcare is largely better (although again, a little weird in Germany). 6 weeks of vacation as a baseline in most places and unlimited sick leave. Generally more of an emphasis on work/life balance and taking time for yourself.

arnath··on Female Founder Secrets: Men Clamming Up
I can't be the only one who thinks this is bullshit, right? The scenario described in the article isn't a dilemma unless the gender of the CEO is part of your reason. If it's not, you will have some rational explanation and should be able to point to your history of not being a sexist asshole.
arnath··on Elon Musk’s anti-union tweet from 2018 must be deleted: U.S. labor board
Aside from "watchdog" as opposed to NLRB, what's wrong with the title? The article describes a bunch of required actions besides just deleting the tweet.
arnath··on How to Think for Yourself
I'm sure the best way to learn how to think for yourself is to read an essay telling you how to think for yourself
arnath··on Ask HN: What's the worst piece of software you use everyday?
The answer is certainly Microsoft Teams but since there's already a large section on that, I'll say Visual Studio.

VS is largely a wonderful piece of software but sometimes just stops working in inexplicable ways. Sometimes I have to build 5 times without changing anything to get it to succeed. Sometimes my build fails but the only error in the error list is about projects that couldn't be loaded (because they failed to compile for some mystery reason). Sometimes it just randomly freezes doing basic tasks. My recent favorite is this endless string of banner errors at the top of the screen saying that there's an error with my projects that I can't dismiss or hide. VS is great, but also sometimes the worst.

arnath··on Trip planning on Android phone turned off for now
This seems like a reasonable place to ask this: Is there an alternative available to Google Places Text Search? E.g., I provide a query that's something like "hardware stores" and a location and I get back a list of hardware stores within the location?

As far as I can tell, the geocoding APIs from stuff like MapBox or Pelias aren't intended for this use case (more like finding a specific hardware store).

arnath··on Ask HN: Improving the world as a software developer
Is this list up to date? I couldn't tell if it only went through 2016 because it was behind or because that's the most recent non-profit funded by YC.
