It never even occurred to me that sudo was something people had to maintain. it's always just been part of linux

I don't know about Japan - I vaguely recall reading that most buildings over there are built with wood (even the big ones) and that this is historically something to do with rebuilding after Tsunamis and earthquakes.

Buildings in most other countries in the world ARE built to last forever, and often renovated, changed, extended and modified long after the incept date until, because needs change, and destroying them to start over is complete overkill (Although some people do these "large scale refactors" - they're usually rich).

> It's just a metter of time someone rewrites a small to medium size application from one language to another using the previous app as the "spec".

I have no doubt of this. I'm sure it's happening already. But the whole point of long term stable applications is that they are tried and tested. A port done in an afternoon by an LLM might be great, but you can't know if it has problems until it has withstood the test of time.

arkensaw··on Windows 8 Desktop Environment for Linux
So nice to see this. I really loved Windows Phone for the simple UI it had which shared a lot of concepts with this. And I felt like Microsoft could have made something really great from the Win8 UI if they had iterated a few more times before dropping it.

I hope you take on that initiative and make the improvements that they didn't

> It's pretty clear to me where this is going. The only question is how long it takes to get there.

I don't think its a guarantee. all of the things it can do from that list are greenfield, they just have increasing complexity. The problem comes because even in agentic mode, these models do not (and I would argue, can not) understand code or how it works, they just see patterns and generate a plausible sounding explanation or solution. agentic mode means they can try/fail/try/fail/try/fail until something works, but without understanding the code, especially of a large, complex, long-lived codebase, they can unwittingly break something without realising - just like an intern or newbie on the project, which is the most common analogy for LLMs, with good reason.

arkensaw··on Efficient method to capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere
using the wood for heating also releases the CO2. I do think planting trees is a good idea, but it's worth pointing out they can be a carbon source even after harvesting, depending on the usage.

On the other hand if the wood is used for construction or furniture it will not emit.

arkensaw··on Two kinds of vibe coding
> As AI edges humans out of the business of thinking, I think we need to be wary of losing something essential about being human

If AI edges humans out of the business of thinking, then we're all in deep shit, because it doesn't think, it just regurgitates previous human thinking. With no humans thinking, no advances in code will be possible. It will only be possible to write things which are derivatives of prior work

(cue someone arguing with me that everything humans do is a derivative of prior work)

I tried it, I like it a lot, but I did find an issue straight away.

I'm on MacOS and I have remapped the fn and command keys so it can be more like Windows (I can't undo 20+ years of muscle memory, and also I just don't wanna)

Anyway, Fresh seems to ignore the remapping - it's back to the command key for copy/paste and the command palette.

Is there a way to access the dropdown menus by keyboard? I can see F underlined for File but no modifier key seems to make it happen

fun, but it seems if I just invest in everything I don't lose.

I get 3x/4x return on a lot of things but only lose <1x if its a bad investment

arkensaw··on .NET MAUI is coming to Linux and the browser
In case anyone is confused

> Using .NET MAUI, you can develop apps that can run on Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows from a single shared code-base.

This new development adds Linux and Browser to that list.

I recently tried out .NET MAUI to see how easy it was to build a hello world app. It was quite messy getting it setup on Mac but eventually I got a simple hello world app working. Nice to use XAML again after all these years. I always liked it.

I ran it a few months back without reading everything. I was trying a bunch of different linux distros via bootable USB drives, when I tried this one and it wiped the underlying drive.

Luckily enough it was just a test machine, I didn't lose anything crucial.

From the examples it seems that every time you run it, it clones a voice from the samples folder. Is there any way to compile this so it doesn't happen every time?
