arkanciscan··on Zoom Earth: Website lets you look at live satellite photos of earths surface

arkanciscan··on Deconstructing Pinterest’s reverse-image-search SEO growth hack
You may have already discerned, but I don't give two shit's about the style of my comments on this site. The Internet is a bathroom stall, and comments are the graffiti. Taking them as seriously as you do is ridiculous.
arkanciscan··on Pac-Man recreated with a GAN trained on 50k game episodes
I've never had a harder time explaining something this impressive to my gf.
arkanciscan··on Show HN: Blunt – A CSS Layout Framework for Minimalists
Minimalists don't use frameworks
arkanciscan··on Zuckerberg says employees moving out of Silicon Valley may face pay cuts
90k for an Oklahoman is a bit overpriced if you ask me ;-)
arkanciscan··on Dolphins at popular spot miss tourists and keep leaving 'gifts' on shore
Scare quotes belong around 'miss' not 'gifts'.
arkanciscan··on Ask HN: I just started my first real workday, any tips?
Stay the hell off HN!
arkanciscan··on Ask HN: Is there still a place for native desktop apps?
Just to add a counter-point to the readily expressed opinion here on HN that the web is terrible and we should all go back to programming Coltran; the only place for desktop apps is testing new APIs for new technologies which the Web can adopt once they've stabilized. So if your phone gets some new breathalyzer sensor or something, and you can't interact with it via WebUSB or WebBT then yeah, you're gonna have to drop down to the OS runtime to play with that until the standards bodies finish arguing about what WebBreathalyzer API should look like. Or more likely, that never happens because it turns out that few people need a phone with a breathalyzer. The web is the common denominator, the platform that runs on the most devices supporting their most common features. That makes it clearly superior for applications which need to reach the broadest audience. That only grows as more and different platforms emerge. But there's always going to be something new to play with, and that's fine too.
arkanciscan··on Native desktop apps are far superior to Web/Electron
Always bet on JavaScript
arkanciscan··on Native desktop apps are far superior to Web/Electron
> It is easy to imagine something much better, where your code runs on a nice tidy runtime native to the OS

Yeah, cause that's how every native platform has been since the begining. Yet the web still needed to be invented. Why?

arkanciscan··on The neoliberal era is ending. What comes next?
Post-neoliberalism?
arkanciscan··on Serve Videos Instead of GIFs
Serve videos as videos. Photo data compresses better with Jpeg. But gifs are still a better option for animated illustrated graphics.
arkanciscan··on If I could bring one thing back to the internet it would be blogs
No mention of Twitter, Facebook or Instagram? It seems obvious to me that that is where the blogs went. People don't create content so that people they don't know have something to do in their spare time, they do it for the recognition, and social acceptance. In other words; they do it for the likes. The blogs dried up because the audience's attention coalesced on the few sites and apps that people used the most. Blogs won't come back unless people read blogs, and people won't read blogs unless doing so it easier than Twitter and Facebook. They don't care about censorship, or even privacy (apparently), just the sweet sweet dopamine rush.
arkanciscan··on The Great CoffeeScript to Typescript Migration of 2017
I got turned down at a job interview in 2014 because I couldn't code coffeescript. The guy interviewing me went on-and-on about how cool it was. It was exactly like how Typescript is today.
arkanciscan··on The Great CoffeeScript to Typescript Migration of 2017
TypeScript just moves all errors from runtime to compiletime, even the ones nobody would ever realistically encounter. The user's browser is the only typechecker that matters, and that's why end-to-end tests are more important than type-linting.
arkanciscan··on The Great CoffeeScript to Typescript Migration of 2017
Lol "proper". Type nerds!
arkanciscan··on The Great CoffeeScript to Typescript Migration of 2017
The devs that did it probably quit immediately after and started a consulting company where they advised all their clients on how to convert to coffeescript too
arkanciscan··on The Great CoffeeScript to Typescript Migration of 2017
I eagerly await the Typescript to SpoonScript (what have) migration of 2027.
arkanciscan··on Malaria 'Completely Stopped' by Microbe
And my doctor told me that having fungus in my genitals was a bad thing
arkanciscan··on Bye, Amazon
I don't see how quitting helps the workers he claims to care about. Many of them would probably love to have the amount of influence that a VP has. Seems disingenuous to claim that as a reason for quitting.
arkanciscan··on The power of admitting ignorance
I'm not talking about management, I'm talking about leadership. Do you have a tech lead on your team? If not how do technical decisions get made? Is it democratic (everyone votes) or more meritocratic (everyone argues their opinion and the strongest one wins). In my experience it's typically the later, and it's in that case that demonstrating a lack of confidence is likely to defeat your chances of leading the team in the direction you think it should go.
arkanciscan··on So I reverse engineered two dating apps
In REST you return all the data because it's better to have some geek reading about which girls rejected him than to have to create a ticket with the backend team to get them to add it later #tea
arkanciscan··on So I reverse engineered two dating apps
I did this on OkCupid just by answering common questions in the most common way. But more dates isn't really the point, at least not for me. So I weighted the questions in the way they mattered to me and I met my current gf. Cheaters only cheat themselves.
arkanciscan··on Some overwhelmed parents are abandoning at-home schooling
It's funny how this got flagged. Breeders are so sensitive about their god-given right to breed.
arkanciscan··on The power of admitting ignorance
I've always readily admitted when I don't know something. Might be that I was raised in Arkansas, where ignorance is a little more acceptable.

It's usually a great benefit for me, for the same reasons the article describes. However the problem I've found is that--as an engineer--if you don't profess complete knowledge, there's a limit to how effective you can be in leadership. Engineers don't take you seriously, if you act as though you have any doubt in yourself. It's a wall I keep hitting and I've about decided I need to start feigning full-bore 10x brogrammer ego just to herd some cats.

arkanciscan··on Zombie Coal
> why are new coal-fired power plants still being planned and built?

Because digging holes is all that some people know how to do for a living apparently.

arkanciscan··on “Baking” damaged reel-to-reel tapes renders them playable again
I hear injecting them with bleach helps too
arkanciscan··on Some overwhelmed parents are abandoning at-home schooling
Maybe if people had to actually raise them, people would stop having so many kids.
arkanciscan··on Ask HN: What scientific phenomenon do you wish someone would explain better?
So can they still do traditional deterministic(?) calculations? Or would that be somewhat akin to using machine learning to do your taxes; possible but just overkill?

I've often heard it said that Quantum Computers can crack cryptographic keys by trying all the possible inputs for a hashing algorithm or something handwavey like that. Are they just spitting out "probable" solutions then? Do you still have to try a handful of the solutions manually just to see which one works?
