aristofun··on Ask HN: Is Programming as a Profession Cooked?
The real answer that everybody can see that didn’t happen and can’t happen with current llms
aristofun··on Ask HN: Is Programming as a Profession Cooked?
Programming as in “monkey typing same boilerplate crap over and over again” or punching holes in cards if you prefer 60 year old analogy - yes.

Programming as in “software engineering” - no. Because it isn’t about choosing the bext most probable word or pixel. At all.

aristofun··on Ask HN: Senior software engineers, how do you use Claude Code?
Claude Code is very good at monkey work of replicating a boilerplate for another 100th variant of some overengineered and bloated piece of java code in a codebase with 99 examples to follow.

It’s like a fire extinguisher that helps engineers manage the problems they created to begin with.

aristofun··on Private equity firms acquired more than 500 autism centers in past decade: study
That sounds to me then that the problem is not only that PE are incentivized only by profits.

But also by the system that disconnects end user’s satisfaction (families with kids on spectrum in this case) from the profit.

In other words if users of those centers were part of the profit equation - PE would not be a problem at all. Am I right?

If so then the real evil are people who created and support such a system I guess.

aristofun··on Private equity firms acquired more than 500 autism centers in past decade: study
Isn’t the government a worst alternative?
aristofun··on Private equity firms acquired more than 500 autism centers in past decade: study
Can anyone explain me like im 5 - what is the alternative and what’s so special about private equity firms in this context?

Like those centers are going to be owned by someone one way or another - what is so special or bad about equity firms vs alternatives?

Genuine question. Because I don’t have a clue how this works in US.

aristofun··on Ask HN: Should I learn Docker to deploy my app in VPS?
Yes, it’s still the cheapest and easiest way to deploy small to not so small apps DIY style.
aristofun··on Who are the companies that still use Perl in their back end?
Booking.com
aristofun··on Ask HN: Any Microsoft employees/devs here? What's happening to Microsoft?
Unfortunately
aristofun··on Ask HN: Any Microsoft employees/devs here? What's happening to Microsoft?
It’s just a matter of time
aristofun··on Ask HN: Any Microsoft employees/devs here? What's happening to Microsoft?
What sane person even cares about that monster and their shitty products today anyway? Unless hands are tied by work or contract.

The sooner they drown the better for everyone and the industry.

aristofun··on My Logitech mouse became unusable, Logi Options+ can't validate certificate
Logitech is known for amazingly terrible software. I wonder how all their software department isn’t fired yet
aristofun··on Ask HN: What's the future of software testing and QA?
I think if anything with growing competition some day fashion for having a dedicated QA department will return.

Today’s situation of developers shitting out software with low to none sense of quality would reach thanks to llms some critical tipping point some day.

And LLMs are not a good fit for most of the QA job. Because it’s mainly about actions (testing) rather than texts anf conversations.

aristofun··on Ask HN: How many HN'ers Celebrate Christmas vs. ?
> I am a fan of Dr. Dan McClellan

Got it. You trust shallow youtube “celebrity” that nobody cares about and who is obviously biased towards his own set of beliefs, being a mormon.

Good luck

aristofun··on Ask HN: How many HN'ers Celebrate Christmas vs. ?
You know that greek democracy had very little to do with what we called democracy in the west right?

Show me other religion that taught to love your enemies and survived to these days at the same time. Just a tiny example of why you totally miss the point by not seeing how innovative was his ethical approach for that time. And yes, one of his great achievements is that he succeeded to make those simple and already existed ideas popular. This is novelty by itself.

aristofun··on Ask HN: Reading list for being a better engineer?
> I'm missing out on utilizing these tools fully.

mastering a tool doesn’t make you a better engineer, only better expert in a particular tool. And it is not the “next level”.

Next level is about getting a wider perspective and bigger picture view on your craft and your job.

On a conceptual/phylosophical level any decent book about building, engineering or designing any complex thing (preferably based on real events, not some made up boring fluff like “deadline” by Tom Demarco) would contain some gems.

I don’t know any single book that is full of gems.

To make this comment useful this is one of many examples, of a book that have couple of good ideas (about feedback system for example) https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1501427.Managing_The_Des...

aristofun··on Ask HN: Expository/Succinct Books on Modern Physics
Landau these days doesn’t look like a “broad coverage” at all.

More like “many specific topics and areas covered in a set of books under same authors”.

Also Landau was one of the last (probably the last) polymath physicists who covered a wide range of fields.

I doubt it is even technically possible to cover even 30% of all modern theoretical physics in a single course with depth comparable to Landau books.

aristofun··on Ask HN: Expository/Succinct Books on Modern Physics
Landau was Einstein+ level genius and the course was a soviet theoretical physics bible many years ago. But it’s not a good educational resource by modern standards and pretty dated.
aristofun··on James Moylan, engineer behind arrow signaling which side to refuel a car, dies
> I also have not read it

Unless you’re a professional driver - you’re in your right. We dont have to learn how to use UI made for people. If that’s the case we could just read where the fricking inlet is.

It’s the design that is bad

aristofun··on James Moylan, engineer behind arrow signaling which side to refuel a car, dies
Another signal that the design sucks :)
aristofun··on James Moylan, engineer behind arrow signaling which side to refuel a car, dies
Sorry to ruin the party but i never really noticed this until this post. Ive always checked the gas side for a rented with my own eyes.

Idea maybe is great but implementation is so so if it’s not immediately obvious for many people

aristofun··on Ask HN: How did you make yourself more marketable?
> Every successful hire is a unique mix of right place, right time, right man

This perspective even though technically true yields nothing useful.

Most hires could have (and often do) been replaced by few alternatives in pipeline, and everyone of them would also be unique mix of same things.

Everyone is unique, but business doesn’t care about uniqueness, it cares about getting the job done in a predictable and profitable way.

You control your experience, resume and skills. But not “marketing” that was original point of this discussion.

aristofun··on Ask HN: How did you make yourself more marketable?
> It cares if your smart. Hence leetcode etc. You need to be practiced for that.

It’s not to detect how smart you are. Leetcode screening is passed via memorizing patterns and masturbating for hours on sample tasks. It has nothing to do with smartness nor with real work.

Your assumption is wrong.

Leetcode is to filter in more disciplined and agreeable folks, who are ready to struggle through whatever meaningless bullshit company come up with. Its a loyalty filter mainly.

Originally it was intended to detect geniuses, but this is not relevant for 20 years now.

We are commodities. It doesn’t mean personal contacts don’t matter. Same way as you will likely buy a barrel of oil from someone you know rather than not. But there is no point in systemic markting efforts to promote your specific oil vs others of the same grade.

aristofun··on Ask HN: How did you make yourself more marketable?
Sorry to disappoint but unless you possess some rare and unique skill in the grand scheme of things you are a commodity.

Business is not your mommy nor a nobel prize committee, it doesn’t care if you are smart or not. It only cares if you can execute your function good enough to justify your salary and get the project out of the door on time.

If 2 candidates are good enough - the cheapest wins.

Therefore there is no point in marketing yourself. Just learn to play by the rules (i.e. how to pass interviews, make up resumes etc) or get unique and extraordinary in your niche.

aristofun··on Ask HN: Loneliness at 19, how to cope?
> What exactly is actionable in it?

That’s exactly the point!

There is no _action_ towards the claimed goal that wouldn’t make the problem worse!

I know that both from personal experience and from years of observation of other people.

The only _action_ is to switch focus completely away from this problem to something more meaningful.

aristofun··on Swapping SIM cards used to be easy, and then came eSIM
esim is a brilliant idea with terrible brain-dead level implementation.

If I can’t take my esim away from a phone and plug it to another one as easy as physical sim - there is zero point in having this bullshit. Just link my cell plan to IMEI or something.

aristofun··on Ask HN: Loneliness at 19, how to cope?
As long as you are obsessed with this - you'll perpetuate the problem. The more needy you are and craving for attention the more unattractive and uninteresting you look as a person.

The only solution for these types of problems (aside of usual phychotherapy/physiology that you need to rule out first with help of professionals!) - is to genuinely stop giving a single damn whether you're alone or not.

Right after that moment you will become much much more attractive as a person. And you will release a ton of energy to focus on things that are more important (like your life goals etc).

But you can't fool yourself and pretend that you don't care while still being worried about the outcomes inside. It's not "fake it till you make it" type of inner game.

That is a key to your problem (after you solved main mommy/daddy issues if any with a decent therapist).

No amount of shallow "be yourself, be interested in others" advice will help until you have a foundation to be congruent in these tactical actions. But if you have that foundation that type of advice is mostly redundant.

aristofun··on Ask HN: What are the best engineering blogs with real-world depth?
Because it’s a computer geeks forum, what else do you expect??
aristofun··on Ask HN: How many HN'ers Celebrate Christmas vs. ?
> See the Crusades. See what’s going on in Israel

Really, christians are to blame for what’s going on today in Israel??

80th level of dumb, congrats! :)))

> Christians love to claim these advancements for themselves

If you play the game of putting hanging all the dead dogs to christianity, it’s only fair to also attribute all the good achievements to it.

Otherwise it doesn’t look fair or logical, isn’t it? Though I doubt you know what logic is :) you just want to spread hatred

Ps: crusades were pretty symmetrical and reasonable response to arabic expansion and aggression back then. Also it wasn’t in any way unique or more cruel than countless other conflicts and wars throughout the history, there is nothing uniquely “Christian” about it.

aristofun··on Ask HN: How many HN'ers Celebrate Christmas vs. ?
Seriously grow up and learn to prove your points with some logic or examples.
